With the announcement for the 76th Primetime Emmys set for July 17th, let’s travel back 70 years and revisit the winners of the 6th Emmy Awards held Feb. 11, 1954 at the venerable Hollywood Palladium and telecast on Khj. New categories introduced that year included best new program and supporting actor and actress in a TV series. Prior to 1954, performers were nominated as individuals, but this year the program for which they were nominated was also included. NBC was nominated for 36 Emmys, while CBS placed second with 30 and ABC trailing far behind with just three.
CBS’s cherished “I Love Lucy’ won its second Emmy for best comedy series, while Vivian Vance took home her only Emmy for the show for her supporting role as Ethel Mertz. The other nominees for comedy series were CBS’ “The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show,” NBC’s “Mr. Peepers,” CBS’ “Our Miss Brooks,” and CBS “Topper.

‘Federer: Twelve Final Days’ Review: A Partial Backstage Pass to the Tennis Great’s Retirement Party
In his classic 1994 essay “How Tracy Austin Broke My Heart,” David Foster Wallace pondered why so many athlete memoirs — and tennis player memoirs in particular — fail to provide sports fans with what they really want to know. What does it feel like to fail in front of millions of people? How does a human being handle such intense pressure? What actually goes through one’s mind in those do-or-die moments where the difference between eternal glory and lifelong disappointment is one tiny miscalculation or half-second’s hesitation? Maybe, Wallace eventually concludes, the answer to that last question is “nothing much at all,” and “the real secret behind top athletes’ genius may be as esoteric and obvious and dull and profound as silence itself.”
In his two previous sports documentaries, “Senna” and “Diego Maradona,” filmmaker Asif Kapadia has gone a great distance toward disproving Wallace’s thesis, using ingeniously edited archival...

Henry Sandon, longtime Antiques Roadshow expert, television personality, author and lecturer, has died. Sandon died “peacefully” Monday at a care home in Malvern, Worcestershire, his son John Sandon confirmed to BBC. He was 95.
Sandon joined BBC One’s Antiques Roadshow in 1979 as the resident expert on porcelain and pottery. His final appearance was on September 30, 2018.
“To the millions who tuned in every Sunday evening to watch The Antiques Roadshow, Henry was like a favourite uncle, whose enthusiasm for even the humblest piece of chipped china was infectious,” John Sandon, who also appeared on the show, said in a statement.
“His joy when he discovered a rare Staffordshire pottery owl jug, nicknamed ‘Ozzie’, was a magic TV moment few will forget.”
Sandon was an expert on Worcester porcelain and a curator of the Dyson Perrins Museum, which became the Worcester Porcelain Museum and then the Museum of Royal Worcester.

Smoky casinos, ceaselessly chiming slot machines, and drinking that happens so early it almost perverts the concept of day-drunk — Las Vegas has it all. This year, it also had the Grammys. Outside the main event, the 2022 edition of “Music’s Biggest Night” didn’t draw as many parties as it has in the past, but it turned out less was more this time around — a phrase surely never before uttered in the land of buffets and 8 a.m. cocktails.

“Nine Days” takes a ludicrous premise and plays it straight. Writer-director Edson Oda’s innovative drama revolves around the tireless plight of Will (Winston Duke), a jaded middle-manager trapped in a purgatorial cycle of interviewing souls for the opportunity of life. Oda’s script is rich with bold ideas, beginning with the surreal notion of entire lives unfolding through VHS tapes and climaxes with a hyperbolic recitation of Walt Whitman’s “Song of Myself.” It’s an enchanting fantasy bookended with genuine emotional beats. Somewhere in between them, however, it settles into a dreary slog bogged down by repetitive existential blather over the course of two hours, as if enmeshed in a soul-searching journey of its own.
. The opening act has a striking immersive quality as the purgatorial setting gradually comes together. Spending tireless hours in a dimly-lit house surrounded by emptiness in every direction, Will watches the lives of...

It’s difficult to find an aspect of popular culture that Hugh Hefner didn’t influence during his long, remarkable life. Spanning journalism, television, film, fashion and, of course, sexuality, his impact on music is one of the least heralded aspects of his legacy. Over the course of two seasons, Hefner used his weekly syndicated variety show, Playboy After Dark, as a platform for a broad spectrum of artists.

I can’t be more invested in this thing than you. This is your life.” He also tells the camera: “It’s not what I found that disappoints me, it’s that...read more...

As on-the-nose cinematic warnings go, This Is Your Death is like a bright-red clown schnoz. Giancarlo Esposito directs a reality show gone suicidal, but it’s all with positive intent. Writers Noah Pink and Kenny Yakkel mean to affirm life, not death. Society is too obsessed with garbage “reality” shows and social white noise, corrupted by The Bachelor (women pitted like catty gladiators) and warped programming. Success is now monitored by viral appeal. Ex-con models who post slutty pictures 24/7 amass 2.5 million followers, while the youngest college graduate *ever* is known only by a few thousand. Esposito’s response to all this digital rot? Simple: turn it off.

David Rossi, profiling god.
That's the central theme of Criminal Minds Season 12 Episode 9.
Oh yeah, the Bau also makes some progress on the escaped serial-killer front.
The occasion this episode is the FBI's brightest young minds coming together to learn from the agency elder.
Or, to put it another way, "The Art of Psychological War" by David Rossi.
It was fun to see scenarios suggested by the seminar participants being acted out by the Bau members, at least in animation, as Rossi gruffly corrects them.
It's understandable that Rossi is tense.
First, it's his birthday, and he's not getting any younger. Second, every year serial killer Tommy Yates gives him a present: the name and location of one of his many kills.
To further complicate things, Yates is one of the few escaped serial killers still on the loose. So to taunt Rossi further, he's feeding him the location of fresh,...

Warning: Spoiler alert! Do not proceed if you haven't watched Thursday's Grey's Anatomy fall finale.
Alex Karev's life is crumbling before his very eyes.
On Thursday's fall finale of Grey's Anatomy, the suspended Grey-Sloan Memorial pediatric surgeon made a costly decision about his future that would dramatically stall his personal and professional lives.
With a trial beginning the next day for his assault case over beating up his fellow doctor, Andrew DeLuca, Alex made the decision -- to Meredith's many objections -- to take a plea deal. The result of such a decision meant Alex would be going to prison for two years, though it's unclear if he actually will go through with it. Darn cliffhangers!

Sometimes funny, often poignant, narration can be hugely effective when deployed successfully. Ryan picks a few great examples...
“God help you if you use voice-over in your work my friends! God help you. That’s flaccid, sloppy writing. Any idiot can use narration to explain the thoughts of a character.”
So says screenwriting coach Robert McKee in Spike Jonze and Charlie Kaufman’s 2002 film, Adaptation. Well, not the real screenwriting coach Robert Mckee, but the one played in superbly aggressive style by actor Brian Cox, who stomps about on stage at a writing seminar like an angry bull. Brilliantly, McKee’s condemnation of voice-overs interrupts the interior thoughts, as narrated by Nicolas Cage’s fictionalised version of Charlie Kaufman - a terminally anxious screenwriter with an Everest-sized case of writer’s block.

To many longtime wrestling fans, it’s obvious that WWE and, therefore, the wrestling business is at one of the lowest points in history. Attendance is down all over the country for all events, TV ratings have gone down to their lowest point in nearly 20 years, and mainstream acceptance of wrestling and wrestlers is non-existent.
Since WWE is a monopoly, they reflect the wrestling industry in North America. Fans of Tna and Roh can pretend that their promotions matter but they are essentially independent companies with television exposure. For better or worse, WWE is the reflection of the wrestling business and their business is in the toilet.
Wrestling fans, almost exclusively under the age of 25, defend the product to the bitter end because, quite honestly, they have never seen great wrestling. Their only exposure to the product is the WWE monopoly and all the problems that come with that.

Perhaps today just wasn’t the right day for Robin Schulz to put out a house album. For all intents and purposes, Sugar is a sincere enough collection of four-four dance music – but when it’s measured against the yardstick of Kaskade’s Automatic and Disclosure’s Caracal, both of which also came out today, it comes across as a largely risk-less attempt to reach the widest audience possible while still maintaining some semblance of artistic integrity.
To his credit, Schulz did succeed in making a consistent follow-up effort to 2014’s Prayer. Every track on the album features the stylistically mature marriage between groove and melody that Schulz has developed over the last decade or so. Heavily driven by both instrumentals and lyrics, the songs on Sugar certainly don’t come across as the attempts of a novice producer, and some are even profound in their own right.

Twin Peaks, Season 2, Episode 6, “Demons”
Written by Harley Peyton & Robert Engels
Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter
Originally aired November 3, 1990 on ABC
“Do you understand the parasite? It attaches itself to a lifeform and feeds. Bob requires a human host. He feeds on fear, and the pleasures. They are his children.”
So much of the time, the care we have for other people brings us pain. Allowing yourself to have love for someone else puts you in a state of vulnerability, a scary place where it becomes far easier to wound. Sometimes, it’s from outside sources, but it can also come from within. The problem is that we can’t help ourselves. There is nothing more powerful than the love and care we have for others, even if we know pain will come. But especially if we don’t.
The people of Twin Peaks are perhaps more cursed in this regard than most.

Wake up. Smoothie. Early morning gym session. Work. Evening Run. Weights when you get home. High-Protein Dinner. Yes, it’s exhausting being a fitness freak. But when you finally get to check yourself out in the bathroom mirror and see how great you look – finally makes it all worth it.
When it comes to fitness you know exactly how much you need to eat, precisely how far you should run and just what weight you need to lift to help you achieve and maintain body perfect. You have thrown out the common-excuses book and no longer hear your own mind saying ‘I haven’t got the time to train’, ‘I’m too tired after work’ or ‘I will miss today but work out extra hard tomorrow’. This is your life and you love it this way.
Achieving the perfect body is hard work. There are no shortcuts or easy way around getting toned up,...

James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain might be two of the friendliest, most jovial people in real life, but in their latest film, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, they’re in the middle of an especially unfortunate situation. They play Conor and Eleanor, a loving couple who become strangers after their marriage disintegrates. The film was originally split in two, The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Him and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her in an effort to offer both perspectives on the situation, but come September 12th, we’ll get a combination of the two, Them. In honor of the film’s release, we got the opportunity to sit down with McAvoy and Chastain to talk about the process of making the two movies and then see them turned into one. We also discuss McAvoy’s improvising skills, X-Men: Apocalypse, if the way they work changes when moving from one director...

WWE legends Stone Cold Steve Austin and Mick Foley have opined on Cm Punk’s potential return to WWE. Speaking on The Steve Austin Show podcast, Austin seemed more inclined to believe that Punk will return one day. Foley in contrast was more sceptical, noting how headstrong Punk had been in past conversations.
Austin noted that pro wrestling is Punk’s passion, which could inevitably lead to him returning. “Because if it’s what you love — and I know he loves the business,” Austin remarks. He then goes on to express the fed up feelings he himself suffered in 2002, which resulted in his own walkout. Austin points out that he ended up returning after less than a year out, “I jumped at the chance to come back.”
Perhaps in time Punk will end up feeling the same way Austin did. Yes he was fed up, but then he got over it,...

Life is a whirlwind for the stars of Netflix's "Orange Is The New Black." When they aren't journeying to Los Angeles to accept awards for the prison dramedy's first season which premiered in July 2013, they're still doing publicity for the second season which premiered in June 2014 and then, of course, there's the third "Orange Is The New Black" season, now in production. That meant there was a lot of ground to cover when I talked to Uzo Aduba last week, starting with thanking her for dropping by the TCA Awards ceremony in July (she joked on Twitter that she, Taylor Schilling, Kate Mulgrew and Danielle Brooks were furloughed). We talked about the Emmy process, which sees her going up against Laverne Cox and Natasha Lyonne for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series, including the selection of "Lesbian Request Denied" as her submission episode. And we discussed Aduba's journey in the second "Orange" season,...

One of the most entertainingly twisted brawlers in the wrestling business, Mick Foley went to great (sometimes sickening) lengths to entertain wrestling fans.
Despite the soap-opera theatrics of wrestling, Foley nonetheless earned 300 stitches, a broken nose (twice), dislodged teeth, a dislocated jaw and broken bones from head to toe. Oh, and he lost an ear.
Is he a masochist? Actually, he’s a stand-up comedian, and has been for several years now, touring around the world from the UK to Ireland to Australia, and performing for American service-members in the Middle-East and South Korea.
A three-time WWE champion and two-time New York Times #1 best-selling author, Foley’s one-man stage show returns to Canada at the end of this month.

Whether in the ring or on the mic, he lived up the name every time he was in front of a crowd. The Rock has treated us fans to some of the most memorable moments professional wrestling has ever seen.

Ricky Gervais celebrates his 53rd birthday today (June 25), and to mark the occasion Digital Spy has trawled through the comedy star's film and TV archive to pick out some of his greatest ever guest roles.
From an early appearance in Spaced to serenading Marge in The Simpsons, here are seven of the best cameo appearances from The Office creator.
1. Spaced (2001)
Mere months before the first episode of The Office aired and Ricky hit the big time, he had a blink and you'll miss it cameo as a slippery estate agent in Spaced. His character 'Dave' incorrectly placed a property ad asking for a couple, which set off a string of events that led Tim (Simon Pegg) and Daisy (Jessica Hynes) to move in to Marsha's flat. The rest is sitcom history.

I’m filling in for Allison this week, and to quote Oberyn, “I will be your champion!” Okay, probably not so much, but I will be going through this unusual episode of Game of Thrones [side note: I haven’t read the books]. When I watch Game of Thrones, I expect horrible things to happen, and so this episode threw me for a loop because it was primarily people being nice to each other. Granted, the specter of death looms large (as always), but as our characters peer into the abyss, it’s a bonding experience…for the most part. Hit the jump for why “a bit of comfort never hurt anyone.” For a show that likes to tease big moments and epic action, “Mockingbird” was captivating even though almost every scene was just a conversation between two people. When there was a third party, it was a minor character meant to illuminate either a fact (like Arya...

Showing up to the McDonald's-sponsored Nylon Cover Launch Party on Thursday (December 5), Joe Jonas and girlfriend Blanda Eggenschwiler supported long-time friend, Demi Lovato.
Sporting his manly mustache, the 24-year-old front man recollected his recent interview with New York Magazine, in which he revealed a few details, including the use of marijuana, that Demi and Miley Cyrus initially probably wanted to keep secret.
"I think there was a lot of anxiety that came about from it, just because it’s something that’s so raw and real," Joe said. "I had good people supporting me, a close-knit group of people that knew it was going to be released."
Jonas continued, saying, "I remember talking with my manager, and he was just like, 'Look man. This is your life. This is your story. You gotta put feelings to the side for a second and just know that this is what you want to say.

The novelist talks to Emma Brockes about friendship, rivalry and being a '30-year overnight success'
Fiction asks a lot of people, says Meg Wolitzer, "to tell them that you need to learn about these characters, to take time out in your day from being frightened for your livelihood and your children, to think about Susan and Bill, who don't exist. It's a nervy thing to ask." She asks it of herself every time she sits down to write – "What fiction ought to do" – and the answer had better be good. "The anxiety makes me a stronger writer."
The Interestings, Wolitzer's ninth novel, is more ambitious than any she has written so far, tracking a group of friends from the moment they meet, at summer camp, up through the decades of their lives. It has done very well in the Us, so that at 54, Wolitzer has become, as a friend joked to her recently,...

I grew up a monster kid in the 1960s. I tried to watch any movie with Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney or Peter Lorre, whether the movie was horror or not, I loved all these actors. But Bela Lugosi has always had a special place in my heart and I’ve made every effort to see all his films. Phantom ship was one title that has eluded me for years, until now.
Courtesy of Image Entertainment and Netflix I finally caught up with Phantom Ship, also known as The Mystery of The Mary Celeste. Was it worth the wait and worth seeing? Yes and no, depending on how you feel about Lugosi. This is one film that allowed Lugosi room to move and create a character not really related to horror movies and it show cases just how good an actor he really was.

Like the majority of women, Kim Kardashian has gained weight during her pregnancy. Though her weight gain is completely normal, the tabloids haven't been kind to the reality star, and her sister Khloe Kardashian has had enough.
In a letter to her sister, which Kim posted on her own blog, Khloe writes that she finds it "disturbing that society loves to critique a woman's shape no matter how beautiful or happy she may be within herself."
Khloe, who is often a tabloid target because of her own weight fluctuations, wrote that she "can not tolerate one more vicious attack on [her] sister!" and says that anyone who criticizes a pregnant woman for gaining weight is "true scum" in her eyes.
The 28-year-old reality star wrote that Kim's pregnancy should be a "memorable and beautiful" time and the tabloids need to stop being so "careless" with their words.

Heavyweight boxer, James Bond stuntman and bodyguard to Hollywood stars
The abiding memory that millions around the world will have of Nosher Powell, who has died aged 84, is of him fighting in vain to save his aeroplane after it had been attacked by a seagull in Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines (1965). Gert Fröbe may have been the German officer in charge of the plane but it was Powell who, as the stuntman and double, ended up in the water.
Powell's first appearance as a stuntman was in Laurence Olivier's Henry V (1944). He also had small roles in David Lean's Oliver Twist (1948) and Cosh Boy (1953), with Joan Collins. In 1952 he was a boxer in Emergency Call, in which he fought the former world champion Freddie Mills. Powell had a decent if not outstanding boxing career himself, reaching No 3 in the British heavyweight rankings.
George Frederick Bernard Powell was born in Camberwell,...

In 1952 he was a boxer in Emergency Call, in which he fought the former world champion Freddie Mills. Powell had a decent if not outstanding boxing career himself, reaching No 3 in the British heavyweight rankings.

From Tilda Swinton to Michael Shannon and Ken Jeong,
they're not the stars but they steal the show. Chosen by the Guide's film writers, the prizes for the 23 best supporting actors of 2013 go to …

1. Tilda Swinton
Age 52
You'll have seen her in We Need To Talk About Kevin, Michael Clayton, The Beach
There are times you feel as if Swinton has made it her mission to eradicate all traces of natural provenance. She's achieved an almost clone-like physical presence: an ageless, androgynous, translucent-skinned human blank, ready to be moulded into whatever role she's assigned. And boy does she get through them. She's been everything from a distressed housewife to the Angel Gabriel; corporate lawyer to Narnian ice queen. But in personality terms, she's the complete opposite of a blank. Malleable though she may be, Swinton has ironically become her own trademark.

X Factor host Dermot O'Leary has expressed an interest in presenting a political TV show.
O'Leary revealed in an interview with the Daily Telegraph that he had turned down the chance to appear on BBC politics show Question Time, but said that he would consider fronting his own politics project.
The TV host said that he fancied taking part in Question Time to "satiate my ego", but admitted that he had concerns about expressing his views and opinions in an age of "internet-generated instant opinion".
"However, I'm into politics," he added. "And I'd like to host a political show, though my manager will probably shudder to hear me say it."
In 2003, O'Leary was asked by The Guardian whether he leaned politically towards Labour, Tory, Liberal or Socialist Workers and the TV star replied: "I suspect that these days I'm politically closest to the Socialist Workers, but they'd take all my money so it's still Labour.
