Edgar Buchanan is one of the driest funniest actors ever produced by Hollywood. He opens the film with his dulcet humorous lines only to close the film in the same vein. Both pieces are filmed in exactly the same place and he is undertaking exactly the same task in both. And yet he is uncredited. He is brilliant.
This film was based on a book written by Emmett Dalton, the youngest of the three Daltons. He had passed away by the time this film was made. He is portrayed in the film by Frank Albertson.
Mrs. Emmett Dalton was engaged as a consultant on the film, according to a March 1940 Hollywood Reporter item.
The movie is full of actors from then The Three Stooges. One of the jurors and two of the lawmen riding the train were all in several of The Three Stooges' shorts from the same era.
At approximately 56:12 minutes into the movie when "Ozark," Andy Devine, brings the stagecoach up to Pete's Cafe, it is evident it is a stunt double driving the stagecoach. As Andy Devine is a rather large man, it is clear the stunt double is not but has a lot of padding to make it appear he is Devine.
