Popeye Presents Eugene, the Jeep (1940)

Trivia

Popeye Presents Eugene, the Jeep

Edit
This use of the word "jeep" predates the rugged Army vehicle. The car was originally called a GP for general purpose. Young soldiers nicknamed it the jeep, after Popeye's pet.
Eugene looks a bit like Sweet Pea. Nonsensical characters were common in cartoons of this era; the Shmoo would gain popularity eight years later in the Al Capp cartoon strip "Lil' Abner."
Popeye's bed has oar posts in the close up shots, but looks like an ordinary bed in others.
Another cute little critter would become a much bigger problem when directions were not followed 44 years later, in the film Gremlins (1984).
Bachelor Popeye still has a modern in home icebox, an upright vacuum, and a floor model radio, though his house is still in need of some repairs.
