Throughout his career, visionary filmmaker David Lynch, whose death was announced Thursday at the age of 78, made 10 features and dozens of short films. He only ever did two TV series (plus a 3-part anthology), but through one of them, Twin Peaks, his impact on the medium was profound.
“Even though, he’s probably better known as a filmmaker, when he entered TV, he revolutionized it,” says Gary Levine, Senior Creative Advisor at Showtime Networks who was a development executive on both the original Twin Peaks series at ABC and its continuation at Showtime.
In summer 1988, Levine, then a senior drama executive at ABC, had just seen Lynch’s Blue Velvet a few weeks earlier when they got word that the director was coming to pitch his first television show.

The world is a worse place now that we've lost the iconic filmmaker David Lynch. Dead at 78, Lynch quickly was able to establish himself as perhaps the premier and the most famous avant-garde filmmaker of his generation, thanks to such quintessentially off-kilter films as "Eraserhead," "Blue Velvet," and "The Elephant Man." But just as "Blue Velvet" upended an '80s-era vision of American suburbia as an idyll in which the nuclear family could grow and prosper, Lynch was able to fully change the landscape of the small screen during his time as an artist. His chief (but not only) entry into the world of television was "Twin Peaks," a genre-bending drama he co-created with Mark Frost that brought together a massive ensemble cast, used a small-town murder as a jumping-off point into a depiction of man's capacity for good and evil, and ended up inspiring countless shows in the following decades.

You can watch two of Kevin Costner's signature Westerns for free on Tubi. Open Range and Dances with Wolves offer authentic and remarkable cowboy tales, showcasing Costner's talent as an actor and director. Amidst the disappointment of Horizon: An American Saga, Costner's legacy in the Western genre continues to shine through in these classic films.
Kevin Costner's best Westerns are available to stream today, and the best thing about this, is that you can watch them for free. Open Range and Dances With Wolves have been added to Tubi's impressive catalog of movies. The streaming service is known for its capacity to host obscure and mainstream hits on a single user-friendly platform that you don't have to pay a single cent to watch.
Both films starring Costner (and also directed by him) were added to the roster of films that usually land in Tubi's catalog on a monthly basis.

Twin Peaks is one of the most unique TV experiences in history. The product of movie director David Lynch, an aficionado of all things strange and surreal, the series was destined for weirdness and greatness from the beginning. Debuting on the ABC Network on April 8, 1990, Twin Peaks startled and compelled audiences with its genre-defying blend of mystery, drama, horror and comedy. From the dreamy title sequence set to the ethereal instrumental of "Falling" to the horrifying discovery of a body wrapped in plastic on a foggy beach, Twin Peaks set the stage for a terrifying mystery and revolutionized TV forever.
Twin Peaks didn't last long on television. It ran for two seasons, with a total of 30 episodes aired over the course of one year.

Pilot episodes set the tone for the series. The Greek root of the word "pilot" is pēdon, which means oar that would steer a boat, much like a pilot episode steering the course for an entire series. Some of the most iconic pilots come from series like Breaking Bad, The West Wing and Lost.
Pilot episodes are the make-or-break moment for many television shows. It sets the tone for the series and has the daunting task of introducing an entire show and its characters to an audience, all under a time limit of an hour (usually). Some shows are still finding their footing during the pilot episode and even so during their first seasons. Pilots have a huge amount of pressure applied to them, and the concept of pilots dominates the industry as everyone is trying to get their shows picked up.

To celebrate the release of Notebook contributor Clare Nina Norelli's book for the 33 1/3 series, Soundtrack from Twin Peaks, the following is an excerpt from its introduction. A bass sounds a twangy, resonant low F accompanied by a barely there, quarter-note cymbal ostinato. An F(add2) chord follows on Rhodes, warm and inviting, like a secret confession. Straining for resolution, the chord descends to settle on a straight F chord, its downward trajectory forming the musical approximation of a lovelorn sigh. The pattern is repeated, but two steps lower, beginning on a D in the bass. Suddenly, a wash of synthesized strings and French horn pours over the mix accompanied by a cool wave of guitar tremolo, oscillating between B-flat(sus2) and B-flat major chords and then sliding up to C(sus2) and C major. The melody in the synth-strings and French horn swirls, as if caught in a whirlwind, and then begins to rise,...

You might say that naming a naval ship the ‘Hms Terror’ is, in some ways, a bad idea – particularly when that ship is to be sent off into the Arctic wilderness in search of the Northwest Passage. But, name it they did, and a century and a half later, this forms the basis of a novel of historical fiction, by Dan Simmons, named The Terror. It is this novel that is now being adapted into an anthology series for AMC, to be executive produced by Ridley Scott.
The Terror was published in 2007, and presents a fictionalised account of the quest of Sir John Franklin, as he led an expedition into the Arctic Circle – the personnel of which were aboard the Hms Erebus and the Hms Terror. Both ships were trapped in ice near King William Island for more than a year, and the harsh environment – coupled with increasing disease and...

AMC is moving forward with a new anthology series based on Dan Simmons' best-selling 2007 novel "The Terror". Ridley Scott's Scott Free and the network have been developing the project for a few years, and now it's finally happening with ten hour-long episodes ordered for a 2017 premiere.
The book is an acclaimed fictional spin on the true story of Sir John Franklin's lost expedition in the late 1840's. Two ships, the Hms Erebus and Hms Terror, traverse well below freezing conditions in the Arctic in an attempt to forge the Northwest Passage. Both ships were lost.
The novel follows the fictional scenario in which Franklin and his crew are plagued by starvation, scurvy, mutiny and cannibalism. They are also stalked across the bleak Arctic landscape by a monster called a Tuunbaq which randomly picks off crewmen.
David Kajganich ("True Story") will write and also serve as co-showrunner with Soo Hugh...

From his Hyperion Cantos novels to his seminal Summer of Night and beyond, author Dan Simmons has provided readers with thought-provoking horror, science-fiction, and fantasy for decades. Now AMC is moving forward with a 10-episode anthology series adaptation of Simmons’ The Terror, which follows an arctic expedition crew stalked by something as mysterious as it is deadly.

AMC is reportedly opening a writers room for "Marvel," a new drama series from Scott Free Prods. which is an adaptation of George Pendle's novel "Strange Angel".
"Angel' was inspired by the story of Jet Propulsion Laboratory co-founder Jack Parsons - a science prodigy and a later discovered to be a devotee of black magic when he died at 37 in 1952.
The writers room aims to have three to five completed backup scripts, several further episode outlines and a completely mapped-out first season so as to hopefully obtain a straight-to-series order. AMC has taken that approach with three other projects - "The Son," "Goliath" and "Lodge 49" - with one, "The Son," being ordered to series.
David Heyman, Ridley Scott and David Zucker will executive produce "Marvel" which comes out of a deal between Scott Free and AMC originally made for the Dan Simmons book "The Terror" about the failed Franklin expedition to find the Northwest Passage.

"Glory, something some men chase and others find themselves stumbling upon, not expecting to find them. Either way it is a noble gesture that one finds bestowed upon them. My question is when does glory fade away and become a wrongful crusade, or an unjustified means by which consumes one completely?"Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper is a movie about men who salute the country that betrayed and mutilated them.Like in Manoel de Oliveria’s No, or the Vain Glory of Command, where men, their arms cut off, struggle to hold uphold the flag of their country. As Mr. Lewis says:“We live in a democracy, gentlemen! And in a democracy, it’s every mans right to be killed fighting for his country!” Some men can be changed. It is possible to find a new consciousness:“Those machine guns are in position. It would mean needless slaughter to oppose us now!

The producers of a documentary about a Twin Peaks mega-fan who spent his teen years in the town where the cult TV series was shot are seeking funds for their movie on Kickstarter. The proposed film, Northwest Passage: A Doc About Growing Up in Twin Peaks, will tell the story of Travis Blue, who survived bullying and bouts with hooking and doing drugs by relying on his Laura Palmer fandom. Long considered one of the greatest shows ever to grace television, David Lynch's Twin Peaks is often approached and understood in a sort of bubble, a vacuum. Which is appropriate, on a certain level, given that it was totally unlike anything that had ever come before and exists without obvious, conventional frames of reference but it overlooks the impact that the show had on the actual, flesh and blood people who found this dark, strange, wonderful world deeply personal. People such as Travis Blue, an outcast growing up in the actual town where Twin Peaks was shot. Northwest Passage is a unique, visually-stunning documentary from director Adam Baran (Jackpot), executive producers P. David Ebersole & Todd Hughes (Room 237, Hit So Hard) and executive producer...

It looked like that show you liked was coming back into style. David Lynch looked downright prophetic when it was announced that Twin Peaks would finally be making a return to our screens in 2016, 25 years after the show was unceremoniously cancelled, ending on one of the biggest cliffhangers in television history – coupled with a promise from one of its characters, in one of many surreal scenes in the show, that she would see us again “in twenty five years”. Spooky, right?
Turns out that Laura Palmer was mistaken in that instance, though. Well, probably anyway. Both new fans (who’ve picked up the show thanks to Tumblr’s propensity for borrowed nineties nostalgia) and the original viewers were equally dismayed when, this week, it turned out that David Lynch had left the project, after Showtime apparently wouldn’t commit to a necessary budget for the eight episode miniseries they’d announced.

iZombie: “Pilot” works on developing the main character
Rob Thomas has been known to television fans for a number of shows over the years, from Veronica Mars toParty Down. His newest series, developed in conjunction with Diane Ruggiero-Wright, brings the iZombiecomics to the small screen in a show of the same name. The show is centred around a morgue assistant who is also a member of the undead, and whose diet of brains comes with the side effect of absorbing the individual’s memories… read the full article.
Broad City ends the season strong
This has been an extremely strong season of Broad City, and though this episode is a somewhat strange one to use as a finale, it ultimately feels like an inspired choice. We have no sense of closure with Ilana and Lincoln’s relationship, which was anticipated. No arc is particularly remarked upon or addressed. It...

Cooper, Miko, and Ophilia scramble to keep up with the veritable smorgasbord of character introductions in the feature length pilot to Twin Peaks. Entitled Northwest Passage, this first episode of Twin Peaks has the unenviable task of introducing the plot, the style, and the town, all at once. We all love on Special Agent Dale Cooper just as much as we hate on Mike Nelson and Broody McBroodersen. Um. James.

Twin Peaks, Season 1, Episode 8, “The Last Evening”
Written by Mark Frost
Directed by Mark Frost
Aired May 23, 1990 on ABC
“Oh, I’ve been going over this in my mind and… see if you can follow my thinking. We’re all born into life and we have a certain number of years to move and breathe and have our vein. That’s from a book on Oriental philosophy I read when I was in the joint. And maybe somebody, somewhere, knows how much time we have. I don’t, do you?” – Hank Jennings
It’s interesting to consider how Twin Peaks would have been received if it aired today. The viewing culture of the 2010s is one that’s been bred for the ad infinitum dissection of television shows: episodes are picked apart in real-time on Twitter, reviewers dig for greater analysis in the days between installments, and cliffhangers and twist...

Twin Peaks, Season 1, Episode 2, “Traces To Nowhere”
Written by Mark Frost and David Lynch
Directed by Duwayne Dunham
Aired April 12, 1990 on ABC
“Wait a minute, wait a minute. You know, this is—excuse me—a damn fine cup of coffee. I’ve had I can’t tell you how many cups of coffee in my life and this, this is one of the best.” – Dale Cooper
After the tour de force performance that was the pilot of Twin Peaks, the most important of the many questions raised was how on earth this would be able to sustain a weekly series. Its vision was so unique and its oddness so carefully calibrated that it was easy to understand why so many of the critics who first reviewed it and loved it gave it zero chance of mainstream success, even while you could also understand why ABC would take a chance on its vision.

From The Twilight Zone to Penny Dreadful, Doctor Who and more, Den Of Geek’s writers revisit the TV episodes that truly terrify them…
It’s Halloween! Icicles are glistening from window sills. Chestnuts are roasting on open fires. North Pole elves are… hang on, no. None of that nice, fluffy stuff is happening. At Halloween, demonic creatures hunt for flesh, monsters creep out of their graves, and TV does its level best to freak us all the hell out.
In the spirit of all that, we asked our writers to select and share the TV episodes, horror or otherwise, that have made them whimper with fear. Here they all are, 31 of them, because, well, at Halloween, we like things to add up to 31.
Note that this isn’t a Top 10, or a Best Of, nor is it listed in order of scariness. It’s a collection of the particular...

A kid who's spent formative years in an obscure cult, rehab, juvenile detention, and, ultimately, prison, isn't likely to grow up to solo-navigate around the Americas in a leaky boat. But Matt Rutherford did, without stopping, and thanks to the documentary Red Dot on the Ocean, we're privy to his adventures. The difficulties of sailing the Northwest Passage in particular have been sailors' undoing since the days of the explorers. And while adventurers have done it in modern times, they've had bigger, nicer vessels than Rutherford's secondhand 27-foot fiberglass sloop, higher-class provisions than his cans of freeze-dried food, and companions to help with the work and the monotony. But, despite all that and Rutherford's appealing self-deprecating nuttiness, the s...
