The films in the running for the 2023 Best Film Editing Oscar are “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Tar,” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Our current odds indicate that “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (10/3) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Top Gun: Maverick” (37/10), “Elvis” (9/2), “The Banshees of Inisherin” (9/2), and “Tar” (9/2).

Five of the six individual cutters competing for the gold this year are first-time nominees, making for the category’s highest newcomer rate since 2018. “The Trial of the Chicago 7” won the Ace Eddie Award for Best Edited Drama Film on Sunday, making it a top contender to win Best Film Editing at the Oscars. Editor Alan Baumgarten defeated two editors he will also face at the Oscars — Chloe Zhao for “Nomadland” and Mikkel E.G. Nielsen for “Sound of Metal,” with the latter expected to be “Trial’s” biggest competition after his BAFTA win. If the cards fall as awards prognosticators are expecting them to, “The Trial of the Chicago 7” would join a very small group of films to only win Best Film Editing.

Charles Randolph has been named the recipient of the Writers Guild of America West’s 2020 Paul Selvin Award in recognition of his script for “Bombshell.”

Randolph will be honored at the 2020 Writers Guild Awards West Coast ceremony on Feb. 1 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif.

“Charles Randolph’s masterful screenplay has turned a challenging and significant cultural moment into a deeply captivating human drama,” said WGA West President David A. Goodman. “His work illustrates that the experience of standing up to abuse transcends the barriers of partisanship and political affiliation. The Wgaw is proud to honor him for this outstanding script.”
