98% of interviews follow the same pleasantries-exchange / question-and-answer / pleasantries-exchange format, yet there are those rare times an incredible opportunity arrives. Which is to say that when I interviewed Paulo Branco at last year’s Tokyo International Film Festival I couldn’t have anticipated he––maybe the greatest producer in film history––would ask me to screen Manoel de Oliveira films that, per him, were receiving no notice from United States programmers. Just five months later I’m delighted to unveil Mirror of Life: Manoel de Oliveira 1996—2004, comprising ten features (and nine restorations debuting in North America) that will screen at Bam from March 28 to April 3.
Featuring John Malkovich, Michel Piccoli, Catherine Deneuve, Chiara Mastroianni, and (of course) Ricardo Trêpa, the program finds Oliveira, who turned 90 during this time, in a period both decadent and reflective––note the Word and Utopia / Porto of My Childhood double-feature or 2001’s I’m Going Home...

Steven Spielbergis a director whose name carries a lot of weight in Hollywood. Whether it's crafting the blockbuster as we know it with Jawsor securing A-list cameos for Casper, Spielberg's influence reaches far and wide. For that very reason, he's managed to work with many talented people and turned out many great movies. Who could forget Tom Cruise's sci-fi collabs with Spielberg, which led to Minority Report and War of the Worlds? Or the career-best performance Liam Neeson delivered in Schindler's List? Yet there's one actor who's never found himself on the set of a Spielberg movie: Jim Carrey, and it isn't for lack of trying. Both Carrey and Spielberg have tried, and ultimately failed, to work with each other on three separate occasions.

With an illustrious and enduring Hollywood career spanning over 40 years and countless cinematic hits to his name, Liam Neeson is undeniably a staple on the silver screen and one of the entertainment industry's most entertaining leading men. Neeson has flexed his phenomenal acting chops in a slew of knockout films like Schindler's List, Love Actually, Batman Begins, and Taken, and has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity thanks to him becoming a certified action hero after starring in the aforementioned fan-favorite hit.
In 2022, Neeson tackled the iconic role of private detective Philip Marlowe in the captivating neo-noir crime thriller Marlowe, sharing the screen with stars like Jessica Lange and Diane Kruger and giving his own dazzling flair and interpretation of the popular literary character. The engrossing period drama impressively marked Neeson's 100th film in his ever-growing resume and further highlighted his charisma and allure as a movie star. Let's take a...

If you asked people around the world what defines their 1990s, you’d hear a mix of nostalgia and milestones. For Rwandans, however, the decade is overshadowed by a singular, haunting reality—hell. In one of history’s most brutal massacres in 1994, the Rwandan genocide claimed 800,000 lives in just about 100 days. The conflict began on April 7th, following the shooting down of the plane carrying the country's president amid simmering ethnic tension between the minority Tutsi and the majority Hutu. It lasted three months, ending on July 19th when a new regime captured power. Hotel Rwanda—much like Schindler's List is to the Holocaust—explored the devastation of the conflict as well as the hopeful human spirit through a powerful redemptive arc. In Hotel Rwanda, Don Cheadle's Paul Rusesabagina, a Hutu hotel manager (there are complexities about his heritage and involvement), saves hundreds of refugees, many of them Tutsi,...

Prices are increasing on everything, including AMC Stubs A-List. However, the price hike comes with an added benefit that could pay off for moviegoers in the long run. During economic uncertainty, movies are typically a great escape; traditionally, going to the movies is a cheaper entertainment alternative. However, ticket prices have increased quite a bit over the past decade, while the average American income has not, which has made the idea of streaming movies at home a more attractive – and affordable – alternative. Movie theaters are doing everything they can to bring back moviegoers, and AMC A-List is one of the best options out there.
In an official announcement (via Variety), AMC revealed that starting May 7, 2025, it's raising the price of AMC A-List memberships to $27.99 per month in all AMC theaters nationwide, or $25.99 per month in every location other than New York and California. This is a $2 price hike...

Seinfeld is undeniably one of the greatest TV sitcoms of the 1990s. With its unique blend of dark humor and relatable neuroses, it's still just as funny and clever as it was 30 years ago. A show about nothing should never have worked on paper. After all, how could it be pitched to executives at a network? (Seinfeld hilariously poked fun at this with a story arc in season four.) That's why credit for the show's success has to go to creator Larry David's razor-sharp writing and also to the incredible chemistry among the four main leads: Jerry Seinfeld as Jerry, Jason Alexander as George Costanza, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Elaine Benes, and Michael Richards as Cosmo Kramer.
While the four leads are the heart of Seinfeld, viewers shouldn't overlook the equally interesting side characters that pop in and out throughout the series. Wayne Knight is a good punchline for Jerry's disgusted "hellos,...

Bette Davis, one of the best actresses of all time, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress 11 times in her career. Some persnickety Oscar historians might say that she was nominated only 10 times, though, as her nomination for 1934's "Of Human Bondage" was one of the very few write-in votes ever permitted by the Academy. Records show that Davis, although not officially nominated by the Academy, still came in third that year.
Davis only won two Oscars, however. The first was for her performance in "Dangerous" in 1935 and the second was for playing a Scartett O'Hara-like role in "Jezebel" in 1938. Her performance in "Jezebel," Hollywood would eventually learn, was the first in a streak of nominations that would last for five straight years. In 1939, Davis was nominated for her performance in "Dark Victory." 1940 would see her nominated for "The Letter." In 1941, it was for "The Little Foxes," and...

Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper were friends for years and co-hosted CNN’s New Year’s Eve specials from 2007-2016.
In 2017, she was let go by CNN for her infamous photo with a model head that looked like Trump. At the time, Anderson said he was “appalled” by the photo shoot.
They had a falling out after this and Anderson admitted he hadn’t reached out. To add to this, Andy Cohen replaced Kathy as Anderson‘s co-host on CNN’s New Year’s Eve special.
If you forgot, Kathy‘s reality show Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List ran on Bravo from 2005 until 2010. She’s since publicly feuded with Andy, who is a Bravo exec, over the years.
In her most recent interview about this topic, Kathy was asked about what happened with her and Anderson, and her and Andy.

Winning at the Oscars for acting is an extraordinary achievement. However, a more remarkable achievement is receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor or Best Actress five years in a row. So far, only two actors have ever reached this record, and no other actors have matched them in 79 years. The actor who first set this record at the Oscars is Bette Davis, one of the most celebrated and respected actresses in cinematic history.
Bette Davis' movie career is best defined by her roles in All About Eve and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? What's more, she gained five consecutive Oscar nominations with her performances in Jezebel, Dark Victory, The Letter, The Little Foxes, and Now, Voyager. However, that's not to say she towered over all the other Hollywood stars of her time in terms of accolades. In fact, she had a rival in Greer Garson, who managed...

Receiving an Academy Award is the pinnacle of any actor's career. While winning is the goal, just being nominated is also an honor. Leonardo DiCaprio is a classic example of an actor who was nominated countless times before finally winning for his performance in The Revenant in 2016, 12 years after he was first nominated in 1994 for What's Eating Gilbert Grabe. It can be a tense waiting game for actors who are nominated several times and continue to lose, especially for those actors who've put their energy into transforming into different characters and getting nominated for stellar performances consecutively.
To say you're a "three, four, or five-time Academy Award-nominated actor" is an especially desirable accolade. When those nominations are one after another, it keeps the actor relevant. Bradley Cooper's Oscar losing streak comprises him being nominated three times in a row for Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, and American Sniper from...

Vanderpump Rules fans are slamming Scheana Shay’s husband, Brock Davies’ recent makeover. They think that he looks horrible and he is generally an attractive man. Brock was always known for his flowing locks and that changed which did not really affect his appearance. Yet, his latest stunt has everyone up in arms. Keep reading for more details.
Vpr Fans Slam Scheana Shay’s Husband’s Tragic Makeover
When Scheana Shay first introduced Brock Davies in 2020 at the Season 8 Vanderpump Rules reunion, he had long, luscious locks. It was very Jason Momoa and he would often rock a man bun and then, right before the Season 10 reunion, he chopped his hair off. The look was very styled and GQ so no one complained. He looked dapper and put together while Scheana experimented with her lighter side. She had blonde highlights in the past but had mostly stuck with dark locks.

Major League Baseball umpires aren’t typically known for having great senses of humor. In fairness, being an ump requires intense concentration, even as tens of thousands of people are audibly cursing your lack of prescription eyewear. But this week, one umpire showed off their love for a beloved comedy during a game.
In a recent match-up between the Los Angeles Angels and the Atlanta How the Hell Are They Still Named the Braves, a dramatic call confirming that Atlanta’s Whit Merrifield narrowly hit a solo home run in the fifth inning was completely upended by the reveal that second base umpire James Hoye was wearing a Kramer shirt underneath his jacket — presumably because his “Balki from Perfect Strangers” shirt was in the wash.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood's soundtrack authentically captures 1969 with top hits and historic radio clips from Khj. The iconic music in the film complements scenes, enhancing the mood and energy of key moments throughout the movie. Quentin Tarantino's attention to detail in selecting songs and incorporating them into scenes transports audiences back to 1969 Hollywood.
The Once Upon a Time in Hollywood soundtrack tracklist is a great collection of music from the era that director Quentin Tarantino uses to transport audiences to 1969 Hollywood. Cass Warner, filmmaker, author and granddaughter of Harry Warner, co-founder of Warner Bros., has died. She was 76.
Her death was announced by her son and Yellowstone actor Cole Hauser on his Instagram page. “Her kindness, love, humor and amazing spirit will be missed by not only my family but the world. You have touched so many,” he wrote.
Cass’ grandfather, Harry Warner, was the eldest Warner brother, a Polish immigrant who co-founded the studio in 1923 after jumping into the early days of movie mania in 1905 with brothers Sam, Albert and Jack. The foursome created a cinematic powerhouse, a dream factory that was the social conscience of Hollywood, one that churned out timely and topical films about the Great Depression, the rise of fascism, the Red Scare and more.
Harry’s daughter, Betty Warner Sheinbaum, wrote of her father as “a very serious man. He was the company’s conscience and driving force.

"Made in Italy" stars a wide variety of actors and actresses from Italy, Ireland, and Scotland. Liam Neeson and Micheál Richardson star as father and son, mirroring their real-life relationship. The movie revolves around a complicated father-son relationship and the sale of their old Italian home.
Made in Italy features a cast of mostly Italian actors, which shouldn't surprise most, given the title of the movie, and two related stars from Ireland. The 2020 comedy-drama was directed and written by James D'Arcy, and the film revolves around a complicated relationship between a father and his son, who come together to sell their old Italian home and confront demons from their past. The movie had a limited theatrical release in August 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so it only grossed a little under $3 million at the box office.
Made in Italy was also released on video on demand (VOD) in August 2020, where it performed well.

Although he has personally competed for the Best Picture Oscar as a qualifying producer of just four films, Martin Scorsese is responsible for directing 10 of the top Academy Award category’s nominees, including 2024 contender “Killers of the Flower Moon.” This recent improvement upon his total makes him only the third filmmaker in Oscars history to helm a double-digit amount of Best Picture nominees. Including him, six people who were already credited with directing at least one nominee rose higher in the ranks this year.
The previous Scorsese films that vied for Best Picture are 2007 winner “The Departed” (for which he earned his sole directing trophy) and nominees “Taxi Driver” (1977), “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020). Of the 10, he received producing notices for the most recent four and directing bids for all but “Taxi Driver.” The only ones who...

We have entered Valentine’s week, and the lovebirds are celebrating it enthusiastically. While it’s the season of spending time with your loved ones, Bollywood never loses a chance to make it more special for lovers and capitalize on it. Over the years, we have seen several films arriving during this special week, and even this year, Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is arriving in theatres. So, before its arrival, let’s look at how Valentine’s releases have performed at the Indian box office over the years.
Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon’s Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is scheduled to be released in theatres tomorrow. Expectations are very low from it, and even the ground-level buzz is negligible. However, after the underperformance of Fighter, it’s said to be a crucial film, and there...

For the second time in six years, the Best Actress category looked to be on track to feature nominees from films nominated for Best Picture. But just like six years ago, it came up short — and it once again involved Margot Robbie.
Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”) made the Best Actress cut on Tuesday. Every film but “Nyad” is nominated for Best Picture. Gladstone, Hüller, Mulligan and Stone were all expected to get in, but Bening was in seventh place in the odds. Now a five-time nominee, she made it in over Robbie, who was in fifth place in the odds and headlines Best Picture nominee “Barbie” (Robbie is nominated as producer).

Hugh Jackman Is Set To Achieve This Huge Feat At The Worldwide Box Office With Deadpool 3 ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia; IMDb )
Hugh Jackman is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating actors in Hollywood but sadly, he hasn’t tasted any big box office success in a long time. But it seems that his tables might turn completely this year as he has a goldmine in his hands in the form of Deadpool 3. If all goes well, it can also create a history for Hugh!
Hugh’s last big success came in 2017
Hugh’s last remarkable box office success came in the form of The Greatest Showman, which was released in 2017. It did a business of $438.55 million globally and was declared a commercial success. Now, after a wait of so many years, Deadpool’s third installment seems to be a sure-shot winner.

Catherine Keener has been entertaining audiences for decades. She played one of Jerry Seinfeld's most iconic girlfriends in 'Seinfeld' history, abstract painter Nina West, in the episode "The Letter," and coerced the famously frugal George (Jason Alexander) to buy one of her paintings. She hilariously starred opposite Steve Coogan in Hamlet 2 (a criminally underrated comedy) and was adorably ignorant of her reality in Friends With Money.

Since the second Academy Awards ceremony in 1930, 73 people have received acting Oscar nominations for their debut film performances, yielding a total of 15 breakout wins. Conversely, the list of actors who have earned recognition for their final movie appearances is much smaller, featuring only 18 general and two successful examples. Those who belong to this club gained entry in a variety of ways, with some having voluntarily quit acting altogether, others having specifically stepped away from film performing, and a few having sadly not lived long enough to bask in the glory of their farewell nominations.
Since film acting retirement can never be absolutely permanent while a performer is still alive, only deceased individuals can correctly be counted as official members of this group. Although most currently living retired actors did not pick up Oscar nominations for their latest films anyway, the academy did smile upon one – Daniel Day-Lewis – on his declared way out.

Justin Edgar, a well-established British filmmaker and advocate for disabled people, has pushed the boundaries for accessibility films with “The Letter,” a drama shedding light on a lesser known deaf community in Germany during the WW2.

Steven Spielberg is retooling Stanley Kubrick's unproduced Napoleon movie into a limited series for HBO, marking the second time Spielberg has brought an unmade Kubrick project to fruition. Spielberg previously finished Kubrick's A.I. Artificial Intelligence film after Kubrick's death, which was a great success at the box office and even garnered Academy Award nominations. Spielberg's previous success with A.I. suggests that his adaptation of Kubrick's Napoleon has the potential to be just as great, given Spielberg's talent and Kubrick's extensive research on the project.

After only four years of business, Kim Kardashian’s clothing brand Skims is now worth $4 billion.
“It has grown quickly, and we’re so proud of that,” Kardashian said in the New York Times. “We’ve had a really good flow of product launches.”
Kardashian founded Skims in 2019 with husband and wife Jens and Emma Grede. Jens is the CEO of the company, while Emma serves as the chief product officer.
The second oldest Kardashian sister said that the idea for Skims began when she couldn’t find shapewear matching her skin tone, noting most clothing skin tone colors were either “light nude or just black.”
“So I used to take all my shapewear and dye it with tea bags and coffee in the bathtub or in the sinks,” Kardashian told Time. “I really was just looking for a solution to what I hadn’t found out there.”

In the battle of the bomb vs. the bombshell, asks ‘Variety’, why not both? Plenty of moviegoers are making the decision to watch Christopher Nolan’s atomic drama ‘Oppenheimer’ and Greta Gerwig’s colourful romp ‘Barbie’ on the same day when the two tentpoles hit theatres on July 21, reports ‘Variety’.
With two weeks to go until the big day, AMC Theatres, the world’s largest cinema chain, is reporting that more than 20,000 AMC Stubs members have purchased tickets to watch ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ on the same day.
Though it was apparently significant enough for AMC to issue a press release, notes ‘Variety’, it’s hard to contextualise the statistic because there aren’t a lot of comparable data points for guests purchasing tickets to see multiple movies on the same day – at least not ones that are publicly available.

The Netflix original fantasy series The Letter for the King debuted in 2020, but the streamer has yet to release a season 2. Based on the novel of the same name by Tonke Dragt, The Letter for the King follows a young squire who is tasked with delivering an important message to the king, who lives across the perilous mountains. Offering a more family-friendly alternative to fantasy shows like Game of Thrones, The Letter for the King is an example of Netflix's growing young adult programming and continues its long line of high-profile genre series. The Dutch and British co-production blended its fantasy elements with broadly appealing coming-of-age tropes.
While the show stuck faithfully to the beloved Dutch novel, the series received a mixed critical reception (via Rotten Tomatoes) from the English-speaking world. Despite that, season 1 of The Letter for the King snagged six Daytime Emmys, including Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Single Camera Editing.
