- Detective Roy Kincaid: What is this Group 1, Group 4 business?
- Dr. Mike Rhodes: Well, you see, medical science has discovered that human blood is divided into four different groups, #1 being the most rare and #4 the most common,. We must see to it that certain of these types are not mixed in the transfusion.
- Detective Roy Kincaid: Then would you say that whoever came into Rodgers' room to kill him was looking for #1 blood?
- Dr. Mike Rhodes: It's possible. That's why I think the coronor made a mistakre in his report, so do you mind if I make a test of these stains for myself?
- Detective Roy Kincaid: No, go ahead,, Doc. 1,2,4,7,11 - it doesn't matter to me. All I know is this poor guy's number was up!
- Dr. Mike Rhodes: Thank you very much.
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: Well, I hope to see you again sometime.
- Undertaker: I'm sure you will!
- [Garrett does a reactive 'take.']
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: Maybe she's not dead.
- Editor: If she's not dead, they're playing a dirty trick on her because they're taking her over to Bixby's Undertaking Parlor.
- [to both Rhodes and Garrett]
- Editor: Now get out of here both of you!
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: Yes, sir!
- Editor: [angrily] And don't come back!
- [they leave]
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: [to Rhodes] I won't believe she's dead 'til I see it with my own eyes. Even then I won't believe it!
- [Walter Garrett has just entered a room after the door suddenly opened and he fell inside. As he gets up, he looks around]
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: It's a fine thing. Leave that door open like that, anything's liable to drop in.
- [in Angela Merrova's hotel room, Walter Garrett can be seen looking around]
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: Miss Merrova, your favorite newsboy's here.
- [Walter Garrett has found the lifeless cadaver of Angela Merrova in the latter's hotel room. After examining the cadaver for a few seconds, he walks over to a telephone and dials a number. On the other end of the line, a man can be seen picking up the telephone. This is Andy. As Walter speaks, he pauses for a few seconds to listen to what Andy says]
- Andy - the Night Editor: City editor.
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: Hello, Andy... Listen, Angela Merrova's dead... Yeah, croaked... Sure, I'm sure... Oh, this is Walt... I don't know, there's nobody here except the monkey, and he couldn't have done it.
- Andy - the Night Editor: Anybody else got it?
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: No, nobody knows it. Not even the cops... Let them read about it in the paper... yeah, yeah, give me Rewrite.
- [at the hotel, a few people can be seen exiting the elevator and heading towards the room of Angela Merrova. Among them are the Hotel Manager, as well as a Detective. This is Roy Kincaid]
- Hotel Manager: This is a horrible thing. What will people think, Lieutenant?
- Detective Roy Kincaid: Oh, they'll probably figure out the joint's a hangout for gorillas.
- Hotel Manager: Exactly!
- [as everyone reaches Merrova's room, they see a man sitting by the door and reading a newspaper]
- Hotel Manager: What?
- Detective Roy Kincaid: Who is this?
- [the man removes his newspaper to reveal that it's Walter Garrett]
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: Well, Lieutenant. Imagine finding you here, of all places.
- Detective Roy Kincaid: [sarcastically] Well, if it isn't the Kansas Sherlock.
- [Kincaid looks at the manager]
- Detective Roy Kincaid: Which room?
- Hotel Manager: [points to the door] In here.
- Detective Roy Kincaid: I'll see you later, brain trust.
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: Anytime I can be of service. Anytime.
- [Garrett watches as everyone goes into the room]
- [as Walter Garrett goes through some files pertaining to Angela Merrova, someone can be seen entering at sitting at a nearby desk. This is Pinky]
- Pinky: How you doing, Wichita?
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: Not so good. I've been in the morgue, the medical institute, I've even had the river dragged. There's something awful cockeyed about this whole setup.
- [after looking at a particular file, Garrett looks at Pinky]
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: Any more dope on this dame?
- Pinky: That's the works.
- Walter 'Wichita' Garrett: Well, it's no help. No friends, no family, an orphan.
- Pinky: Did you ever hear of an orphan with a family?
