This Boston Marathon drama attempts to portray a survivor’s difficult emotional journey even as it waves Old Glory
The story of a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing who became a symbol of the indomitable spirit of the city, Stronger is a film that tries to have it both ways. On the one hand, the picture explores the emotional toll on everyman Jeff Bauman (Jake Gyllenhaal), who finds himself celebrated as a figure of hope, simply by virtue of having survived. On the other, with its swelling score and obligatory shots of noble, fluttering Us flags, the film buys into the hero narrative wholesale.
With his huge haunted eyes, Gyllenhaal does a decent job of capturing the conflict of a man who can’t admit that he is struggling for fear of letting down his family and the city that supports him. Headed by Miranda Richardson as his boozy mother,...

Another huge win for the Houston Astros, another chance for Josh Reddick to pay tribute to Old Glory on his crotch. Reddick rocked his legendary American flag skivvies (again) for the Astros' post-game turn-up after eliminating the Red Sox in the Alds on Monday ... bustin' out the Red, White & Blue for some champagne showers. The chances of Roman Reigns winning the triple threat match at Fast Lane are so great, Vegas shouldn’t even lay odds for it. It’s Reigns vs. Triple H at WrestleMania 32 in At&T Stadium, and there’s virtually no chance that WWE gives us anything different. Commence two months of, “Geez, how predictable,” and, “I’ll bet Daniel Bryan gets cleared on Monday, April 4.”
Looking back at three decades of WrestleMania history, there have been far greater WWE Championship storyline builds than, “Vince’s son-in-law tries to shoot Vince’s pet project into the stratosphere before a potentially record-setting crowd.” Of course, such transparent vanity is still better than Sgt. Slaughter pledging allegiance to Saddam Hussein, providing a catalyst for Hulk Hogan to defend Old Glory in a championship showdown that fell embarrassingly short of selling out the Los Angeles Coliseum. WWE are planning a major Raw episode for tonight, with the aim to start 2016 with a ratings success.
Tonight’s episode will emanate from San Antonio, Texas, with a WWE Championship main event in which Roman Reigns will defend against Sheamus. What’s key to that, is Mr McMahon will be the special referee. The Chairman has traditionally been a ratings draw, and is very effective in the heel authority role. By stacking the deck against Reigns, and basically rebooting the old Austin / McMahon storyline, WWE are hoping that fans will get on board with the champion.
WWE’s preview is also hinting at a major role for John Cena, with the suggestion that he may get another rematch against Alberto Del Rio for the Us Championship. The WWE website says “might Cena make another attempt at Old Glory early in the New Year? Even better, will Cena...

This week’s Raw really wasn’t a great episode of WWE’s Monday night show, but they were able to finalize the SummerSlam lineup. For the past few weeks we have been able to confirm a few matches, but after Raw we know eight matches that are definitely happening at the summer spectacular on August 17 in Los Angeles. They’re listed on WWE.com now, so let’s have a quick look at all of them.
John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship - The main event of the show was furthered on Raw by airing a video package with comments from Lesnar and Cena. Neither guy was at Raw, so it was smart of WWE to air the video package. They actually aired it twice just so they could make sure people saw it.
Both men are expected to be at Raw next week.

Vladimir Putin wrote an op-ed in the New York Times Thursday, which was picked up by news outlets seemingly everywhere, much to Stephen Colbert’s chagrin. The worst aggregation offender was the Drudge Report, which featured a photo of a winking Putin gripping the American flag. “Here he is with his dirty, vodka-stained hands all over Old Glory,” Colbert said. Due Out: August 13, 2013
Plot: After the White House is overtaken by terrorists, former secret service agent Mike Banning (Butler) is the only man left to save the president of the United States (Eckhart) and stop the terrorists from achieving their plot.

Thomas Edison introduced the first Kinetoscope in 1891, meaning America has been making movies for more than half of its existence as a country. It makes sense, then, that over that time there have been at least a few rousing cinematic celebrations of the U.S. of A., and the 4th of July is as good a time as any to look back on some of Hollywood’s great patriotic panegyrics. Regardless of your thoughts on American exceptionalism, Americans have always been exceptionally good at telling you just how exceptional we think we are.

However, the song is called “God Bless Amerika,” and it contains some less-than-flattering lyrics about the USA.

Remember when the first Man Of Steel trailers were first released, with all that whispering, those soft-focus shots of grass, and a gentle wind whipping both Old Glory and a line of laundry across a grey pastel sky? This idyllic, ethereal tone led many a viewer to (half-jokingly) wonder if the trailer hadn’t been accidentally switched with that of an upcoming Terrence Malick film. This isn’t how you advertise an action film; much less a superhero story. What’s with the butterfly seemingly trapped in the chain? Come on, this isn’t the place for pretentious metaphors! “I work because I want to work,” says Redford, now 76. “Work keeps me going.”

When I interviewed Redford in 1984 for his role in "The Natural," he was defensive about his image as a matinee idol and hesitant to talk with reporters because, he told me, “if you talk about an issue, what comes back is a description of what you’re wearing. Reporters only want to know how tall you are and if your teeth are capped.” Now 76, Redford has no reason to apologize for his appearance or his life; he has endured as a major talent for a very long time; he is still actively making films and starring in them, and he has turned Sundance into an important institute for independent filmmakers. He is now defying age and arthritis by working hard, playing tennis, skiing and riding horseback through miles of rugged country.

Hmm, how shall I describe my reaction when I read the news that Cher and the Logo network are teaming up on a TV show about '60s Hollywood? Hmmmm. How about: I fell through the floor and into the sky. This is news from a better dimension, people. A richer, greater universe where our queen is a half-breed gypsy tramp who's just like Jesse James and named, uh, Cher. I'm torqued for this show.

It’s good to represent Old Glory. Marvel’s second film of 2011 didn’t let the company down, as “Captain America: The First Avenger” topped Matthew Vaughn’s $55 million opening and, depending on the film’s final Monday numbers, will either have edged out “Thor” for the best Marvel movie of 2011, or come very close at second place. The Star Spangled Avenger opened to an estimated $65.8 million, which currently gives it bragging rights over “Thor”, which opened with $65.7 million two months ago. That’s such a razor-thin margin that you’ll have to wait for final numbers on Monday to really know where to put “Captain America” and “Thor” in the list of top grossing Marvel films of 2011. The Captain’s only other studio competition was the romcom “Friends with Benefits”, starring Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake, which came in third place with $18.5 million. That’s slightly behind the opening...

Sacha Baron Cohen's upcoming comedy The Dictator, about a ruler who "risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed," will apparently chronicle the delirious jingoism we expect from Borat's creator. In this new candid still, we see Cohen don Old Glory in a new and proud and funny and horrifying way.

MSNBC's Martin Bashir isn't angling to get a seat on the One Nation bus with Sarah Palin. In fact, as he told viewers Tuesday, he thinks the whole thing might just be illegal. How so? Well, if you're expecting a brainiac argument about campaign finance law or a nuanced take on the media, this won't be it. Bashir says Palin's possibly in violation of the law over her use of Old Glory: "The whole thing could be in breach of a federal law because the United States Flag Code establishes important rules for the use and display of the stars and stripes, the flag of the United States." Oh yes.

The start of the summer movie season is just around the corner and that means big-budget, comic book superhero movies will be gracing local theaters for the next four months. You’ll find a list of the cast and their roles in the film, the plot synopsis for each film and a theatrical trailer. Patriotism can be expressed in many different ways: Hanging a flag from your front porch, singing along with the National Anthem at the start of a sporting event, exercising your right to vote. But Monday night’s installment of Dancing With the Stars showed us that national pride can also bloom with the glistening thrust of a sculpted male torso, in the rhythmic heaving of a woman’s overripe bosoms, and through the hypnotic undulation of Kym Johnson’s zero-gravity-loom dress (among other red/white/blue/insane garments). Amber waves of grain? They’re so two-thousand-and-late. As national treasure Tom Bergeron...

Here it is, folks. The first full-length trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger has finally been released online. This trailer is said to be shown in theaters starting this weekend, but we got it early. The trailer doesn’t have a lot of new footage, but we do get to see more of what we have already seen.
This thing looks good. I feel a lot of elements from the first “Iron Man” in this one. Heck, we even get to Stark in this one! I’m thinking this might just be the best comic book movie released in the last few years. Marvel has done something amazing with this one, I can feel. Check out the trailer after the jump.

Entertainment Tonight ran a special sneak peak of the new Marvel film Captain America: The First Avenger. We’ve got a lot of cool new footage in this clip, but we have to watch it while enduring the horrible voice over Et decided to add to the film. Hey Et, I don’t need your commentary to see what’s going on in this clip! Oh well, it’s still new footage of what should be one of the biggest films of the year. We should be seeing the new trailer for the film later this week, as it is being shipped out to movie theaters all across the country.
We’ll keep you updated with all Captain America news as it comes available to us, especially that new trailer, whenever it makes its way online. Check out the new clip after the jump.

Update: Marvel has also released a new image for Captain America, which you can see after the clip.
Last night Entertainment Tonight had a small blurb about Captain America: The First Avenger where they showed a few clips from the new film. While we don’t see a lot in this 25 second clip, I’d say close to 25% of what we see is completely new footage. If you slow the video down and look real close, you can even see Captain America throwing his shield. Bad ass.
We’re going to see a new trailer for the film real soon. Like tonight soon. Et will be showcasing a new trailer for the film during their broadcast tonight, so be sure to check that out. If you miss it when it airs, don’t worry, we’ll have it here as soon as that bad boy arrives online. In the meantime,...

Ever since Hugo Weaving was cast as the Red Skull, fans have been worried how he would look in the film. We got a nice glimpse of him during the Superbowl, and decided he didn’t look half bad. Now we have an official image from the film showing Weaving in full costume as The Red Skull. I think he looks pretty badass, and should be a very frightening enemy for Captain America.
Director Joe Johnston explained in a recent Entertainment Weekly article how Steve Roger dealt with bullies in the past, before the transformation into Captain America:
For Steve Rogers it’s a very personal thing. At one point he says, “I don’t like bullies, I don’t care where they’re from.” He makes a complete physical transformation to a perfect human specimen. But inside he doesn’t change at all. It must be tempting to...

Captain America: The First Avenger will either be a good bit of old-fashioned daring-do or total crud. You never know with Hollywood. But one thing does look pretty darn cool, and The Red Skull. Check out the new photo below for a great gander at the nefarious Nazi bastard who goes up against Cappy Americano!
Hugo Weaving stars as the weird-looking villain also known as Johann Schmidt, a man that got turned into the Red Skull after a Nazi experiment. Those sick bastards! Although it looks like they gave a him cool leather coat and free reign to spread terror to make up for turning him into a monster!
Joe Johnston has explained Captain Yankeepants’ approach to fighting the good fight is based on him being bullied before being experimented on in the Super Soldier program. Isn’t that double standards or is okay to chemically alter human beings to...

Oh say can you see? Yes, the man who kicks arse for the Stars and Stripes has got a teaser poster knocking about on the internet. Captain America: The First Avenger stars Chris Evans as Steve Rogers a.k.a. Captain America! Joe Johnston shot the flick in the UK in London, Liverpool and Manchester (not very patriotic). Rumours Captain America was spotted shopping in the Arndale Centre and taking the famous Beatles Tour are completely made up! The action-adventure will be coming to our screens in retro-fitted (boo) 3D.
The poster design goes for a rather moody tone with a mournful-looking Cappy surrounded by what looks like flying dirt. Johnston is a pretty solid director so there’s reason to expect a good, quality actioner. At least Captain America doesn’t look like Barry Gibbs from the Bee Bees, which can’t be said of Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

Here is the first official look at Chris Evans as Steve Rogers alias Captain America in Joe Johnston 'First Avenger: Captain America.' Evans graces the cover of the new issue Entertainment Weekly, here are some quotes from the EW article:"At the time, I remember telling a buddy of mine, 'If the movie bombs, I'm f—-ed. If the movie hits, I'm f—-ed!'" After declining the part three times, Evans took a meeting with Marvel execs and Johnston and was dazzled by their plans for the movie. He still felt wary about suiting up for Captain America — but then he had an epiphany. "I was just scared," he says. "I realized my whole decision making process was fear based, and you never want to make a decision out of fear.'" Evans signed a six-picture deal with Marvel to play the character, and he has no regrets:...
