Archer is a spy/secret agent. Of sorts. He works for his mum, who is the Director of Isis (the International Secret Intelligence Service) and together with his secret agent colleagues he thwarts villains, travels the world, tries to avoid the jail-bait attentions of wealthy teenage heiresses and gets stuck in the Everglades. He thinks he’s pretty cool.

Archer is the latest adult-themed cartoon to try its hand, following in the wake of South Park, Family Guy and American Dad. Its deliberately low-fi animation style (it feels like something from the 1960′s) works just fine with its self-proclaimed “James Bond meets Arrested Development with a Mad Men twist” approach and as with all of these sorts of shows, the emphasis is on the jokes, the script and the comedic scenarios, rather than trying to out-do Pixar for immersive world-building.

With every season of Archer, the Isis team leaves the confines of the office and go on a trip together, intentional or not, that ends up being one of the funniest episodes of the season. Okay, I'll admit it: A few months ago I wouldn't even have entertained the idea of seeing "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" multiple times, let alone recommend that you see it. Back in January, when we published a list of five things we liked about the show and five things we hated, we had trouble coming up with enough items for the former, and had even more trouble narrowing down our list of the latter.

Since then, the budget-busting Broadway show has undergone a massive overhaul, with former director Julie Taymor departing the production, and an entirely new set of writers — including comics scribe Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa — brought on to rework the script.

With the show finally ending its record-breaking run of preview performances next week and marking its official Broadway debut, I found myself in the audience a second time to find out whether "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" had...

Much like last week's Monaco adventures, this week's Archer took us to a foreign land.  This week's destination?  The mother load of all spy destinations: Russia.

Normally, I'm a much bigger fan of Archer when the show forgets its a spy parody and keeps the dyfunction at home in the Isis offices.  But this week, "White Nights," was actually a very welcomed surprise as it proved to be one of the series' best efforts.

Sure, this week didn't have a B story relying on the Isis goons and only mere cutaways to the Krieger-less core group as they weighed in remotely in the A story, but that didn't stop Archer from bringing it in the comedy department.

Archer didn't even have Lana or Ray during his adventure as he was hilariously miss-paired with long-time nemesis, Barry.  These two characters play well off each other, but it was really Sterling and...

Coming off a streak of Triple A Archer episodes (yes, the A stands for Awesome), "Jeu Monegasque" didn't even stand a chance to win me over.  Especially, when the episode was heavy on the Bond-parody side of things as the gang took a trip to Monaco.

We all know how I feel about these spy-heavy, stand-alone adventure.  Don't?  Then just check out my review of "Swiss Miss."  Fine, I knew you were too lazy.  Hint: not a fan.

It's not to say I didn't enjoy the gang's trip to the tiny country, but Archer is always at its strongest when it's stuck at the office or has most of the gang put together.  Sure the show is a spy parody at its heart, but those make for some of the surprisingly weaker episodes.

The Julie Taymor show Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is the most expensive Broadway production of all time, and one of the most troubled. It has been delayed multiple times, beset by injuries and subsequent investigations and union issues, and met with a scathing critical response. And yet, because reason rarely triumphs over curiosity, tickets are selling like crazy. The official opening date has been pushed back to March 15, and now in the three weeks before that date producers have reportedly hired Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to rewrite the book originally created by Julie Taymor and Glen Berger. He's also writing the American Psycho musical, but more important has written comics for Marvel, including a couple of Spider-Man stories. We don't know what changes he'll make, but given that reviews of Turn Off the Dark call it static, sketchy, ill-formed, incoherent, and tedious, there is some Herculean work to be done. Wow.  Now that should have been the Archer season two premiere.  Picking up right after Archer discovered the chip in his brain and Pam returned from vacation, it fit much better with the timeline.  Not to mention the episode was just better than last week's "Swiss Miss."

This week we were treated to some of my favorite Archer moments: just hanging out at the Isis office.  Without even a mission during "A Going Concern," this spy comedy was more akin to an even more dysfunctional version of The Office.  You know with less paper sales and more armed Odin agents in slightly darker black turtlenecks.

But that's just fine, because hanging out in the office means more from the amazing supporting cast of goons of Pam, Cheryl, Cyril, Gillette, and the amazing Krieger.  Yeah, that's right, I'm finally on the Krieger bandwagon.

What was one of your favorite Archer quotes from last night?  

Dr. Toboggan: I like Archer's line of: "I can't be alone. That's when she strikes like a slutty little Ninja." This is one of the few times where I feel bad for Archer, for the first time he tries to do the right thing and it all just keeps backfiring.

Mark F: Lana: No. She looks like she's just turning 18. Archer: Exactly! Plus Europeans use the metric system which... Malory: Sterling Malory Archer!

Eric H: I'm a sucker for the recurring jokes on Archer so I'll give it to Malory's "Immigrants. Cramming their low riders full of free health care and.

For whatever bizarre scheduling reasons, FX decided to air tonight's standalone episode, clearly designed as episode two, instead of next week's "A Going Concern," the natural follow-up to Archer's season one finale.

Bizarre executive decisions aside, the light-hearted "Swiss Miss" was a fun vacation to Switzerland with our favorite animated spy team after their long hiatus.

As a ridiculous fan of the show that has seen every season one episode multiple times and the episode in question twice, it's tough to figure out how to be critical and review this cartoon.

I will start off by saying, that although the adventures in Gestalt protecting Herr Schlotz and Anka might not be as strong as season one, fear not friends: there's some real gems in the seven season DVD screener FX sent me.

That said, "Swiss Miss" still had me entertained.  If you can get over the cliched, over-used bit...

Sploosh. FX's super-spy send-up Archer is back and back with a vengeance. The visuals are sharper, the witticisms faster, and the budget (in all likelihood) bigger. Tonight's Season 2 Premiere reminded us all why the show is so damn good, and hinted at just how big creator Adam Reed and Co. can go with a little wind in their sails. Engage!

Tonight marks the return of Archer, which may just be the best animated spy action-comedy in the history of animated spy action-comedies.

Wait. I had something for this.

Ah, yes! Now I remember. In my Season 2 review of the FX comedy, I wrote about why I think it's swell, but I do have something more to share with you: A few thoughts about 'Swiss Miss,' the first episode of the new season. Consider them conversation-starters, because I'm very keen to hear how my fellow 'Archer' fans liked the season 2 premiere.

FX's subversive animated comedy Archer returns tonight and not a moment too soon, for television needs the gonzo spirit and out-there humor of this Adam Reed creation. The first seven episodes of Season Two of Archer, provided to press for review, might be the strongest to date, offering up a virtual cornucopia of sight gags, double entendre, shockingly foul language, superspy hijinks, and one of the worst examples of humanity in Hr executive Pam Poovey. To say that these memorable characters are flawed is an understatement of the highest order; they're so morally corrupt, so self-absorbed and tragically insane, that it makes for obsessive and unpredictable viewing. And that's perhaps the beauty and magic of Archer: in creating a cast of characters who are so reprehensible in every way, it's impossible to turn your eyes away from the carnage--both physical and personal--that follows in their wake. Chicago – The second season premiere of “Archer” opens with a hysterical scene that ends with a suave super-spy saying “Look at me, I am the perfect gentleman.” Of course, the statement comes by virtue of the fact that Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) is pointing out that he’s not taking a softball joke set-up involving a 16-year-old German jailbait and her body hair. It’s the kind of unique humor you’ll find only on “Archer,” one of the more consistently clever and riotously funny shows on television, back tonight, Jan. 27, 2011 on FX.

“Archer” is so funny that you can DVR it and watch it again (and truly should pick up the season one DVD, recently release by Fox). I’ll admit to watching the second-season premiere, “Swiss Miss,” more than once. There’s something about the best adult-driven animation that makes it incredibly rewatchable.

As a die-hard comic book geek and as someone who loves a Costco-sized serving of schadenfreude, I have been following news about Julie Taymor’s musical fiasco, Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark. While Sony and director Marc Webb prepare to reboot the Spider-Man franchise in theaters for a Summer 2012 release, Across the Universe director Julie Taymor is bringing the swinging superhero to Broadway in the most expensive musical ever made.

Made for a rumored $60 million dollars, the Broadway-bound Spider-Man musical (!) Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is slated to open in January 2011. The actors have rehearsed, the sets have been built, the costumes have been sewen and the tickets have gone on sale. So what does Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark look like?

The first images from the Julie Taymor influenced production have arrived, and they're weird in that Julie Taymor kind of way.

Taymor's always been a filmmaker that's known for her wild visual side. Look at her adaptations of William Shakespeare's Titus (1999) or The Tempest (slated for release next month), Frida or Across the Universe and you'll see that she's a daring visionary when it comes to fashioning new looks at old source material. So when it came to design the visual look of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Julie Taymor seemed like an interesting choice to make.

They cram three villans into the musical as well as a stunt double for all the dancing and jumping.  No seriously, the figured he was in a mask as Spidey so why not hire someone pretty who can sing and let someone else do the hard work.  So once again pretty is better than good acting.

Julie Taymor is a crazy person and I mean that in the best possible way. The woman who once made The Lion King not only tolerable but pretty damn great as a Broadway musical is headed back to the big stage and on the receiving end of her hyper-visual style this time is ... Spider-Man?

Yup. While Taymor has become famous for her big screen adaptations of live stage classics by William Shakespeare - Titus and The Tempest - she's bringing everybody's favorite radioactive teen to live theater with Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark.

The opening date has been pushed back slightly on this due to an actor injury but things are still moving ahead and this month's edition of Vogue features the first images from Taymor's latest as shot by Annie Leibovitz. In September, we showed you the first look at the costumes for the villains Green Goblin and Swiss Miss in Julie Taymor’s problem-plagued Spider-Man musical, Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark. The costumes looked ridiculous, but admittedly they were out of context. Now Vogue has premiered a look at the costumes in beautiful images by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz…and the costumes still look ridiculous. The images also provide the first look at Carnage, who, without the benefit of CG, looks like a Halloween costume for a child who’s missing a neck. Says Taymor of including the character, “I saw the inherent theatricality in it, and I couldn’t resist.” Looking at the image, I hope she at least tried to resist.

Last we heard from the "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" team, director Julie Taymor was defending the recent delays that pushed the expensive musical's premiere back to January 2011. Today, we have a set of new images from the blockbuster production, including our first look at the design for Carnage, one of several Spidey villains appearing in the show.

The latest issue of Vogue has the five images, which include a shot (embedded below) of Spider-Man (played by Reeve Carney) battling with Green Goblin (Patrick Page) while Mary Jane Watson (Jennifer Damiano) swoons, and our first look at the musical's version of Carnage. There's also an up-close shot of Spidey against a New York City backdrop (also embedded below), a picture of new villain Swiss Miss threatening Mary Jane, and a photo of Peter Parker out of costume with Mary Jane.

Just a few months ago, many were still wondering if Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark was ever actually going to happen. We finally got word in August that Spidey's Broadway musical will premiere on December 21st after the previews, which are set to begin on November 14th, and that means the cast and crew had to get together right away to really fine tune the piece. Sure enough, that must have been what was going on the past few weeks because just the other day Good Morning America was taken over by the production featuring a performance by Reeve Carney, the man who'll don the Spidey suit, and appearances by Bono and The Edge, who are responsible for the show's music and lyrics, as well as director and co-writer Julie Taymor.
