However old and seemingly oldfashioned too this film appears it truly is a must-see for anyone interested in Martin Andersen Nexø and his socialrealism which fully shows in this particular film.
Andersen Nexø uses all possible means to make the viewer aware of the true tragedy which goes on right under our noses without we act in any kind of way.
Ditte Menneskebare is but on a Andersen Nexø's masterpieces but Tove Mäes plays Ditte very convincing and the rest of the cast is also very convincing and the films is indeed "true to it's time".
Tragedy never gets "oldfashiond" neither ought Ditte Menneskebarn to since it is a film portraiting life then and, sadly enough, attitudes also of today.

When you think of unforgettable movie experiences "Ditte Menneskebarn" immediately comes to your mind. Although I haven´t seen it for a very long time, the memory of it is still very strong. It is about the growing up of a young girl on the Danish country-side. The film is sometimes very sad and at times very poetic. The actress, who plays Ditte, gives a once in a lifetime performance. If you ever get to see this film it´s a must!

This is an most excellent movie about human destinies (and tragedies!) in old Europe when poor people were still poor people, centering on the life of Ditte, a young Danish girl in the countryside. Watching this movie is a heart-wrenching experience, and it is only too clear why this movie is conventionally observed to be one of the greats in international movie history, despite the "unpopular" black/white format. This is a remarkable and realistic view on life and European (read:white western) common history, the history of the poor people in the European country side, made while it was still remembered! This is an experience that will make you grow as a person. This is a must see film!
