Suitsis one of the rare television series that made history not once, but twice. It was part of the classic "Blue Skies" era at USA Network, which focused on high-concept, character-driven programming — a rarity on television nowadays. Then, Suits landed on Netflix and Peacock and promptly became a streaming hit; it was the most-watched show of 2023, beating out streaming staples like The Bearand Beef. This eventually led NBC to develop a new series, Suits LA, which, true to its name, focuses on a group of lawyers stationed in Los Angeles. Before Suits LA lands on NBC this February, here's a rundown of what happened throughout Suits — and what makes it must-watch television.

Sturgill Simpson has announced the “Who the F**k is Johnny Blue Skies? 2025 Tour,” a lengthy US run taking place from April to late May.
Billed after Simpson’s new stage name, Johnny Blue Skies — which he employed for the release of his excellent 2024 return album, Passage Du Desir — his spring 2025 tour will make its way through a handful of US cities that Simpson missed on his fall 2024 run.
The trek also includes appearances at Texas’ Two Step Inn and California’s Stagecoach Festival, as well as a pair of shows in Asheville, North Carolina — which were re-scheduled from his 2024 tour after Hurricane Helene hit. For this tour, Simpson has promised that there will be “No openers. If you’re on time, you’re late.”

For most of each year, Karolyn Grimes leads the sort of quiet, family-centric life that one might expect any retired 84-year-old grandmother to lead — but come December, that all changes. Indeed, when The Hollywood Reporter connected with her by telephone last week, the Seattle resident was, for the 22nd time, being celebrated at a festival in Seneca Falls, New York, and she would soon be rushing off to Detroit, where she would be a guest of honor at a similar gathering. Christmas was coming, and like Santa Claus, she had many places to go and people to see before the 25th.
That’s because 78 years ago, at the age of six, Grimes spent two weeks on the set of Frank Capra’s film It’s a Wonderful Life playing Zuzu Bailey, the daughter of Jimmy Stewart’s George and Donna Reed’s Mary — and in so doing, totally unbeknownst to her,...

John Peaslee, the writer and producer who worked alongside his longtime creative partner, Judd Pillot, on such sitcoms as Coach, Just Shoot Me!, According to Jim and Liv and Maddie, has died. He was 73.
Peaslee died Monday of natural causes at his home in Sherman Oaks, Pillot announced. The two had collaborated for 35 years.
“I will be forever thankful to the universe that I was with him for several hours that day, that I was able to hold his hand, recount all the stories — way too many to tell, but not nearly enough to fill the hole in my heart,” Pillot wrote on Instagram.
Peaslee and Pillot teamed on ABC’s Coach from 1989-93, on NBC’s Just Shoot Me! from 2002-03, on ABC’s According to Jim from 2005-09 and on Disney Channel’s Liv and Maddie from 2013-17.

There are nine legendary stars who only need a Grammy to achieve the Egot grand slam of show business awards: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony (see the gallery at the bottom of this post). None of them were on the list of 2025 Grammy nominees, though, when they were announced on Friday morning, but there is a nominee this year who could get three quarters of the way there if he wins: composer Kris Bowers.
Bowers is nominated for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for his work on the movie musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” It’s the third nomination for the composer, who previously contended for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella for “Blue Skies” in 2020 and then in the score soundtrack race in 2022 for the Netflix series “Bridgerton.” A victory this year for “Color Purple” would put him just a Tony away from achieving Egot status.

Hallmark+’s The Chicken Sisters follows two warring mom and pop friend chicken restaurants: Mimi’s and Frannie’s. The feud between the restaurants arose long ago when the founders of each had a falling out.
In present-day fictional Merinac, modeled after the setting of Kj Dell’Anotnia’s book of the same name, complications have further arisen between the two single women who continue to run the restaurants, passed down to them from their ancestors. A reality food network-like show comes to town to capture the dueling dynasties, and secrets are unearthed as tensions arise.
The series contains several recognizable artists and a whole bunch of songs that fit the atmosphere of the show. Find a complete soundtrack list — put together by music supervisor Angela Asistio — including songs from Boygenius, Linda Ronstadt, The Lumineers, Wild Rivers and more.

USA Network is reentering the scripted originals space.
The NBCUniversal-owned basic cable network has handed out a straight-to-series order for a reboot of The Rainmaker, from producers Lionsgate TV and Blumhouse TV, marking its first non-shared scripted series since 2020.
The cabler, which saw its former hits Suits and White Collar pop on Netflix, currently shares linear rights with corporate sibling Syfy to Chucky as its lone scripted series. The drama is the only scripted original to air on the network that previously ranked as the most watched cable network for a dozen years straight.
Based on the best-selling 1995 novel by John Grisham and subsequent 1997 feature film adaptation starring Matt Damon, Claire Danes, Jon Voight and Danny DeVito, The Rainmaker revolves around Rudy Baylor, a fresh out of law school attorney who goes head to head with courtroom lion Leo Drummond, as well as his law school girlfriend. But the show also offered a new sound by way of its Jack Antonoff-produced soundtrack. The latest release from the record finds Bartees Strange reimagining the 1940s classic “You Always Hurt the One You Love.”

Nick Cave has released a cover of Édith Piaf’s 1940s hit “La Vie En Rose,” which appears on Jack Antonoff’s soundtrack for the Apple TV+ series The New Look. Stream it below.
On the Antonoff-produced piano cover, Cave takes on the French singer’s signature track in English, giving it a new dimension as he delivers the tender ballad in his distinct voice: “When you speak, angels sing from above/ Everyday words, they turn into love songs.”
Cave’s version of “La Vie En Rose” follows Lana Del Rey’s take on Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies,” Florence + The Machine’s cover of “White Cliffs of Dover,” and The 1975’s rendition of “Now Is the Hour.”
You can catch the first five episodes of The New Look now. Filmed in Paris, the series centers around Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, and their contemporaries as they launch modern fashion after World War II.

Lana Del Rey, she of the country club Chemtrails, has finally discovered “Blue Skies” — at least in the form of songwriter Irving Berlin’s 98-year-old standard.
Of course, since it’s Del Rey, “blue” is a double-entendre, and there’s a sadness in her voice that she can’t quite shake. Where Ella Fitzgerald quivered her voice with a little hope on her rendition and Willie Nelson went full country funk with his, winking his way through every line, Del Rey sounds restrained and distant, as if the blue skies...

Florence + The Machine are back with their rendition of “White Cliffs of Dover,” the first single from Jack Antonoff’s official soundtrack for the forthcoming Apple TV+ series The New Look.
The New Look centers around Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn), Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche), and their contemporaries as they navigate the fashion industry in a post-World War II climate. And so it makes sense for Florence Welch and company to put their own spin on “White Cliffs of Dover,” a 1941 song made famous by Vera Lynn to boost morale amid a war-torn Britain.
Produced by Antonoff, The New Look soundtrack comprises mid-twentieth century songs covered by contemporary artists including Lana Del Rey, The 1975, Nick Cave, Beabadoobee, and, of course, Antonoff’s Bleachers. See the full tracklist and stream Florence + The Machine’s version of “White Cliffs of Dover” below.

Exclusive: USA Network’s “blue sky” series of the 2000s and early 2010s are having a moment this year between Suits‘ blockbuster run on Netflix, which broke streaming records and led to a potential offshoot series at NBC, and the Monk reunion movie, which premieres today on Peacock and already is getting awards recognition.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 fixed the unsatisfying conclusion of Star Trek: Nemesis, ensuring that its events no longer matter. Data's resurrection in a synthetic form in Star Trek: Picard was a fitting and more satisfying conclusion for the character. The Romulan Supernova and Starfleet's response in Star Trek: Picard overshadowed the events of the Romulan Senate coup in Star Trek: Nemesis.
The recent Star Trek: The Next Generation cast reunion has ensured that the major events of their final movie, Star Trek: Nemesis no longer matter. This was me at the barbershop a few Saturdays ago. I was fifth in line for a haircut and trying to focus on my new library book, but my attention kept being drawn to the TV set, which was not only showing the legal drama, which ran from 2011-19 on USA, but showing its very first episode. Though I didn’t watch the series for long, I remembered that debut very well, having reviewed it a dozen years and several websites ago.

Star Trek Nemesis is generally considered one of the worst films in the franchise, but it does feature some memorable moments for the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation. By the dawn of the 21st century, the Star Trek franchise was in fairly bad shape. Star Trek: Voyager ended its seven season run in 2001 with eroding viewership; Star Trek: Enterprise debuted later that same year and suffered middling reviews and anemic ratings. On the big screen, 1998's Star Trek: Insurrection failed to match the success of the previous Tng film, Star Trek: First Contact, and there was a then-unprecedented four year gap before the next film was released.
That film would ultimately become Star Trek Nemesis, the final film featuring the Tng cast. Star Trek Nemesis was a box office bomb, reviled by both critics and fans upon release. It's the only Star Trek film to not debut at...

Germany’s KiKA, France’s TF1 and Denmark’s Dr Sales figure among the best-known of contenders for the 2022 Cartoon Tributes, awarded for outstanding achievement in Europe’s TV animation industry.
France, followed by Spain, dominates Cartoon’s three categories of broadcaster, investor/distributor and producer of the year, which will be voted on by the about 1,000 delegates at this year’s Cartoon Forum, which takes place in Toulouse, Southern France, over Sept. 19-22. Award winners will be announced on Sept. 22.
Backed by German public broadcast giants Ard and Zdf, KiKa figures as Germany’s biggest kids connect provider. But it will face tough competition from TF1 Unité Jeunesse, the children’s arm of giant French broadcast network TF1 whose kids slot Tfou broadcasts 70 hours of programming a year.

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 6.
With “Stormy Weather,” Star Trek: Discovery celebrates the Trek tradition of getting some excellent musical standards into the bold voyages in the final frontier. With Picard, it was a call back to “Blue Skies,” but now, we’ve got a new version of the song made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, “Stormy Weather.” This version is sung by actress Annabelle Wallis, who has voiced “Zora” the intelligent Disco computer since 2018’s Short Treks episode, “Calypso.” The newest Discovery episode obviously references that story a lot but what else? From galactic barriers to an old Scotty trick with the transporter, here’s every Easter egg and shout-out we spotted in Discovery Season 4, Episode 6, “Stormy Weather.”

He’s baaack! Fans of “This Is Us” were given a treat in March’s Season 4 finale when Gerald McRaney returned as fan-favorite Nathan Katowski, aka Dr. K, for the first time in two seasons. McRaney won an Emmy in 2017 for his performance in the pilot episode, in which Dr. K comforts Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) after he loses one of three newborn triplets. He was nominated again in 2018 for his brief appearance in “The Car” episode, but lost to co-star Ron Cephas Jones. Do you think McRaney will earn a 2020 Emmy nomination for Best Drama Guest Actor? Make your predictions right now.
In “Strangers: Part Two,” Dr. K reunites with Jack and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) when the young couple is feeling sad about their baby’s death on what would have been his first birthday. The doctor meets the surviving infants he helped bring into the world, Kate and Kevin,...

Star Trek: Picard‘s season 1 finale had fans in tears for multiple reasons, but one of the most notable was Data’s surprise return in the episode, with the beloved android given a more fitting farewell than the one he got last time. The Next Generation crew’s adventures originally wrapped up with 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis, which culminated with Data sacrificing his own life to save the day. Though it was a heroic death, fans were heartbroken that he didn’t get to say goodbye to his friends first.
In the Picard finale, “Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2,” this was finally put right. Jean-Luc himself perished, with his body giving into his terminal brain disease, but his consciousness was able to be saved by Dr. Soong’s mind transfer process allowing him to live on in a cutting-edge synthetic form that was reprogrammed to look like his human self.

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains many spoilers for the first episode of CBS All Access’ new series, “Star Trek: Picard.” If you read further without having seen the show, resistance is futile.]
It’s been a little over 17 years since we last saw Jean-Luc Picard in action, in “Star Trek: Nemesis.” You would be forgiven for forgetting much of the plot of that lackluster film, which bombed at the Christmas box office in 2002 But it is practically required viewing for getting the most out of “Star Trek: Picard,” Patrick Stewart’s return to the captain’s chair. The premiere episode of the new CBS All Access series links up almost seamlessly with the ending of “Nemesis,” as the lilting strains of “Blue Skies” come wafting through the cosmos. That’s an easter egg, and a delightful one for fans (more on that later), but easter eggs aside, there are wholesale plot points in this first episode, titled “Remembrance,” that might fly over...

The backstory of Star Trek: Picard assumes you remember the events of the last Tng movies Here’s what’s going on.
Spoilers ahead for Star Trek: Picard episode 1 “Remembrance."
Data is dead. Long live Data! In the very first episode of Star Trek: Picard, Jean-Luc (Patrick Stewart) tells young Daj (Isa Briones) that Data “sacrificed himself” to save Picard on their “final mission together.” But when did that happen? And, if you’ve been reading Star Trek comic books for the last 18 years, you might be really confused? Here’s what’s up with Data’s death, and why reports of his previous resurrections have been greatly exaggerated.
In Star Trek: Nemesis, Picard and the crew of the Enterprise-e had to stop Picard’s younger evil clone, Shinzon (Tom Hardy) from destroying the Federation with a deadly weapon composed of something called Thalaron radiation. Like...

Star Trek: Picard is now just days away from hitting our screens, marking the return of Sir Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard and many of his old crewmates for the first time in 18 years. And what’s more, their old ship will apparently be seen in the series, too. This extended teaser for the CBS All Access show teases the reappearance of the Enterprise-d, despite it being destroyed back in 1994’s Star Trek: Generations.
This promo does a good job of establishing Picard’s hunger to get back out in the stars, with the former captain remarking: “All that emptiness, all that silence… I’d forgotten how much I’d loved it.” We then see him returning to Starfleet, demanding he be reinstated for service for one single mission. Finally, he admits to Data in the stinger, “I don’t want the game to end.”

The latest TV spot for Star Trek: Picard has offered some brief flashes of new footage for the much-anticipated return of Starfleet’s greatest captain, and has also given us a tacit suggestion of the appearance of Data.
The Irving Berlin song “Blue Skies” was a deliberate choice for the trailer, as it harks back to the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. It’s beautifully sung by Data during the wedding between Riker and Troi at the film’s beginning before the crew discovers the remnants of B-4, an earlier model of android. At the pic’s climax (spoilers for a movie released in 2002), Data sacrifices himself to destroy the Reman warship intending to spread thalaron radiation to destroy all life throughout the Federation, and in the final scene, B-4 begins absent-mindedly singing the song, suggesting that Data downloaded aspects of his memories and personality into his “brother” before his destruction.

Hot off a trio of Golden Globe wins and a raft of guild nominations this week, the “Green Book” team continued on the awards season trail with a Wednesday afternoon stop at Manhattan restaurant Patsy’s for a lunch and Q&A hosted by actor Daniel Craig. Located less than half a block from Carnegie Hall, the former home of “Green Book” subject Dr. Donald Shirley (portrayed by Golden Globes winner Mahershala Ali), the event included unannounced special guests in the form of the jazz pianist and composer’s real-life friends and protegés.
The awards campaign for any biographical film benefits from the support of those who knew the subject, but for the embattled “Green Book,” it’s essential. The film, which follows Shirley and former bouncer Tony “Lip” Vallelonga (Golden Globes and SAG nominee Viggo Mortensen) as they embark on a working road trip through the racially divided Deep South of the 1960s,...

Those of us who share the rather unusual- and sometimes bizarre-profession of reviewing films for a living all share a nasty little secret: there are countless classic movies that we haven't seen. I'm not alone in making this mea culpa. No less than the late, great Robert Osborne, whose insightful introductions on Turner Classic Movies helped launch that channel's success, once confided in me that even he could list numerous classic movies that he had yet to catch up with. When he confessed this to Lauren Bacall, she told him that she envied him because she wish she could recapture the sheer joy of seeing a great film for the first time. I've never seen the 1942 musical "Holiday Inn". I can't say why but perhaps it's because that as a boy growing up in the Sixties, such productions seemed quaint and unappealing when I had a celluloid tidal wave of WWII flicks,...

This article marks Part 4 of the Gold Derby series analyzing 84 years of Best Original Song at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at the timeless tunes recognized in this category, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the Academy Awards winners.
The 1946 Oscar nominees in Best Original Song were:
“You Keep Coming Back Like a Song” from “Blue Skies”
“Ole Buttermilk Sky” from “Canyon Passage”
“All Through the Day” from “Centennial Summer”
“I Can’t Begin to Tell You” from “The Dolly Sisters”
“On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe” from “The Harvey Girls”
Won and should’ve won: “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe” from “The Harvey Girls”
1946 marks a very obscure and awfully modest year in Best Original Song. There’s not really a rotten apple in the bunch, but there’s also nothing to get terribly head over heels about.

Steve Ross C'mon and Hear: An Irving Berlin July 4th Celebration Birdland Jazz Club, NYC June 26, 2016
In a letter to Alexander Woollcott, Jerome Kern wrote that "Irving Berlin has no place in American Music… He is American Music." What better person to present the art of Irving Berlin than venerable singer and pianist Steve Ross, who presented this great American composer's work in a sterling evening entitled C'mon and Hear: An Irving Berlin July 4th Celebration, at the historical Birdland Jazz Club on Manhattan’s West 44th Street, where he shared the stage with seasoned bassist Jered Egan.
Steve deeply understands the art behind Berlin's voluminous body of work, in a manner unique to himself. His renderings of both well-known, lesser known, and even obscure Berlin songs are historically astute and performed in an exceedingly skillful manner which is at once serious and at the same time carefree. I like musicals and I think it’s a shame that the film musical is mostly a relic of the past, dusted off a couple times a decade for a big revival and then set in the back of the closet for a few more years. La La Land is a generally competent film that I just can’t make myself stomach. It’s well-made, the script is good, and the chemistry between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling is frankly delightful. But it’s not a movie I liked. It’s so convinced that it’s fresh and wonderful just for being a big Hollywood musical that they didn’t bother to make a good musical, or a compelling love story, or to cast more than three people. La La Land is cuter than it is good, and I’m just not feeling like loving a cute movie right now.

Claudette Colbert movies on Turner Classic Movies: From ‘The Smiling Lieutenant’ to TCM premiere ‘Skylark’ (photo: Claudette Colbert and Maurice Chevalier in ‘The Smiling Lieutenant’) Claudette Colbert, the studio era’s perky, independent-minded — and French-born — "all-American" girlfriend (and later all-American wife and mother), is Turner Classic Movies’ star of the day today, August 18, 2014, as TCM continues with its "Summer Under the Stars" film series. Colbert, a surprise Best Actress Academy Award winner for Frank Capra’s 1934 comedy It Happened One Night, was one Paramount’s biggest box office draws for more than decade and Hollywood’s top-paid female star of 1938, with reported earnings of $426,944 — or about $7.21 million in 2014 dollars. Lorna Luft at Birdland, NYC
Attending Lorna Luft's performance at Birdland last Monday night, a foreign tourist couple were seated next to my table. They happened upon the show when looking for a "jazz" club, and knew nothing of Ms. Luft previous to seeing this show. After the performance, they shared that they truly enjoyed the entire evening. I mention this because Ms. Luft, who cannot help but reside to some degree or another in the shadow of her mother, Judy Garland, and sister, Liza Minnelli, is very much a fine and talented entertainer, quite independent of those associations.
The theme of the evening was the men in Ms. Luft's life: the composers with whom she has worked (Burt Bacharach and Jerry Herman), and one who she honors a great deal (Larry Hart). Also the men who she adores working with, two of whom, David Elder and Tony Yazbeck,...

There is nothing better than watching an old movie at an old movie theater. The Hi-Pointe Theater in St. Louis is an independently run single-screen old-style movie house built in 1922. Just two weeks ago they celebrated their 90th Birthday with a two-night party featuring live music, trivia with prizes, and screenings of Sunset Boulevard and Top Hat on their massive screen. The Hi-Pointe was the home of the Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration Film Festival last year and is the place to go for Late Night Grindhouse, the monthly screenings of 35mm prints of horror and exploitation films (mostly) from the ’70s.
This month The Hi-Pointe will host a trio of classic Christmas movies on three consecutive Saturday mornings at 10:30am. Admission is just $5.
Hi-Pointe Theatre is located at 1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117
Showtime Line: (314) 995-6273
