Travis Scott Announces ‘Road to Utopia’ Las Vegas Nightclub Residency
Image
After having just secured his first individual ticketed concert since last November’s deadly Astroworld tragedy, Travis Scott’s performance calendar is continuing to fill up. On Monday, the rapper announced that he’s set to be a “resident artist” at Resort World Las Vegas’ Zouk Nightclub starting in September. His first two headlining performances are scheduled for Sept 17 and Oct 15.

The Zouk show — dubbed “Road to Utopia” — will follow his scheduled appearances at London’s O2 Arena on Aug. 6 and 7. He’s set to “feature some previews of upcoming tracks” during his Vegas show,...

Art Director Guild Sets Bill Creber & Roland Anderson For Hall Of Fame; ‘Planet Of The Apes’, ‘White Christmas’ Among Credits
William J. Creber
The Art Directors Guild Hall of Fame will be induct William J. DeMille collaborator Roland Anderson into its ranks at the 24th Annual Art Directors Guild’s Excellence in Production Design Awards next month.

The announcement was made today by President Nelson Coates, Adg and Awards Producer Scott Moses, Adg. The 2020 Awards will be held Saturday, February 1, at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.

Creber, who died last year, is best known for his work on the Irwin Allen disaster movies The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno as well as the first three Planet of the Apes movies. Bob Hope on Blu-ray
You pick up a lot of baggage when you live to be 100, a sentiment confirmed by the long, long movie career of Bob Hope. His unofficial status as the preeminent entertainer of the 20th century is open to debate but he was without a doubt that era’s most conspicuous comedian. Marlon Brando’s infamous dismissal, “He’ll go to the opening of a market to receive an award”, was mean-spirited but it had the sting of truth; for over eighty years Hope was everywhere, for better or worse.

Living up to his nickname, “Rapid Robert”, the 31-year old Hope shot out of the gate in 1934 with a series of quick-on-their feet comic shorts revolving around his unique presence as a leading man and comical sidekick rolled into one. It wasn’t long before he was starring in pleasantly prosaic musicals like The Big Broadcast of 1938 and handsomely mounted...

Top 15 Movies of This Past Year: Do Audiences Really Want Original, Quality Stories?
Top box office movies of 2013: If you make original, quality films… (photo: Sandra Bullock has two movies among the top 15 box office hits of 2013; Bullock is seen here in ‘The Heat,’ with Melissa McCarthy) (See previous post: “2013 Box Office Record? History is Remade If a Few ‘Minor Details’ Ignored.”) As further evidence that moviegoers want original, quality entertainment, below you’ll find a list of the top 15 movies at the domestic box office in 2013 — nine of which are sequels or reboots (ten if you include Oz the Great and Powerful), and more than half of which are 3D releases. Disney and Warner Bros. were the two top studios in 2013. Disney has five movies among the top 15; Warners has three. With the exception of the sleeper blockbuster Gravity, which, however dumbed down, targeted a more mature audience, every single one of the titles below were aimed either at teenagers/very,...

B-Sides: These Freaks Got Personality
“Personality” was first performed by Dorothy Lamour in the 1946 film Road to Utopia. That’s not why it’s this week’s B-Sides. Being sung by a busload of human oddities in a Frank Henenlotter flick is the reason why this freakish take on “Personality” made the B-Sides.

Actress-singer Annie Ross has had a storied career that began with an “Our Gang” short and near its end saw her cast as the freak-loving “Granny Ruth” in the 1992 threequel Basket Case 3: The Progeny. A nutzoid mother hen to a gaggle of freaks similar to the franchise’s star mutant, Belial, it’s her love for these freaks of nature that leads to this amazing big band, bus-bound musical number from the most insane entry in Frank Henenlotter’s Basket Case franchise – and that’s saying something.

This scene is also a little depressing because looking at the wonderfully imaginative make-up...

Why Can’t An Oscar-Winner Look More Like A Hit?
Throughout the first half of February, the Sound On Sight staff will take a look at the Academy Awards.

Whether one of the major studios takes the top prize at the Academy Awards or not, they have no squawk this year.

Several years ago, as you might recall, the Big Guys were getting fed up with having their clocks cleaned in the Best Picture category every year by releases from independent companies. The last time one of the majors walked home with the Best Picture gold was 2006 when Warners’ The Departed took the trophy. Before that, you have to go back almost a decade — to 1997 — to Titanic, split between 20th Century Fox and Paramount.

Over the last decade and a half or so, the indies have usually taken a fair share of the nomination slots and almost always the grand prize. The majors retaliated by pushing for an expansion of...

Edgar Wright at an event for Scott Pilgrim (2010)
Are These The Top 100 Comedies Of All Time?
Edgar Wright at an event for Scott Pilgrim (2010)
From time to time, major organizations such as the AFI give us lists of the best movies of all time. There's some kind of grand countdown from 100 to 1 and then we debate for a few days over how low this one was ranked or why was another ranked too high. And most of the time, we rarely get a glimpse behind the process. Time Out London has just released their list of the 100 Best Comedies Of All Time but have done it in a fun and uniquely transparent way. They surveyed over 200 people who work in, with, or around comedy and asked them for their top tens. Then they averaged all those lists together to come up with the top 100. The best part, though, is that all the lists are public. So instead of just listing the 100 best comedies of all time, we can also find out which ten comedies...
