A Memoriam In Four Colours: Peter David
Image
This past weekend, after a long battle with ill health, we lost Peter David. So, as he pulls his chair up to the great writing desk in the heavenly bullpen, we look back at the career of one of comics’ most prolific and creative writers.

David’s career in comics began via the journalism route after graduating from New York University with a degree in journalism. After finding this a tough egg to crack, he decided to pursue a career in fiction. Still, it was a long journey from making this decision. Following on from some smaller publishing jobs, he served five years in Marvel’s sales department. At the time, Christopher Priest was editor of Spectacular Spider-Man and bought a script off David, being impressed by his ‘maverick’ like quality. That story was ‘The Death of Jean DeWolff’ What followed is a little grey, a rumblings of conflict of interests,...

Sam Neill in L'Antre de la folie (1994)
The Criterion Channel’s October Lineup Includes ’90s Horror, Techno Thrillers, James Gray & More
Sam Neill in L'Antre de la folie (1994)
These last few years the Criterion Channel have made October viewing much easier to prioritize, and in the spirit of their ’70s and ’80s horror series we’ve graduated to––you guessed it––”’90s Horror.” A couple of obvious classics stand with cult favorites and more unknown entities (When a Stranger Calls Back and Def By Temptation are new to me). Three more series continue the trend: “Technothrillers” does what it says on the tin, courtesy the likes of eXistenZ and Demonlover; “Art-House Horror” is precisely the kind of place to host Cure, Suspiria, Onibaba; and “Pre-Code Horror” is a black-and-white dream. Phantom of the Paradise, Unfriended, and John Brahm’s The Lodger are added elsewhere.

James Gray is the latest with an “Adventures in Moviegoing” series populated by deep cuts and straight classics. Stonewalling and restorations of Trouble Every Day and The Devil, Probably make streaming debuts, while Flesh for Frankenstein,...

Image
We’ve learned the sad news today that two-time Oscar nominee Melinda Dillon, known for playing “Mother Parker” in Bob Clark’s A Christmas Story, has passed away at the age of 83.

The actress passed away on Monday, January 9, the family announced today.

Melinda Dillon was nominated for Academy Awards in 1978 and in 1982, first for Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, playing the role of Jillian Guiler, a mother whose child is abducted by aliens. Jillian ends up joining Roy (Richard Dreyfuss) on his adventure.

Later in 1982, Dillon was nominated in the same category – Best Actress in a Supporting Role – for her performance as Teresa in Sydney Pollack’s film Absence of Malice.

Melinda Dillon is also known for her decades-spanning roles in Bound for Glory, Slap Shot, Harry and the Hendersons, Captain America (1990), Magnolia, and Reign Over Me.

Dan Patrick & ‘Hollywood Con Queen’ Producer Campside Media Rev Up Another Wild Podcast Tale
Image
Exclusive: Campside Media, the company behind Chameleon: The Hollywood Con Queen podcast, has found another wild story to tell in audio form – this time featuring NASCAR, true crime, and civil rights.

The Sister-backed company has teamed with sports broadcaster Dan Patrick and iHeartRadio on Running Smoke.

The series, which is hosted by journalist Rajiv Golla, follows the colorful saga of Derek White, a native of the Kahnawake reservation, who made his professional racing debut in 2015 as the first indigenous driver to race at NASCAR. Less than a year later, White was banned from the racing after being arrested in one of the largest tobacco smuggling busts in Canadian history when a border sting erupted and ensnared everyone in its path. Now, White is fighting to clear his name in court and stands as a very unlikely native rights warrior — at the center of a sovereignty fight he never really wanted in the first place.

I Wouldn’t Be in Your Shoes
Image
Gotta love that title! Producer Walter Mirisch’s small-scale Monogram noir was once assumed lost, but now it’s making its home video debut on Blu-ray. A luckless young entertainer finds himself neck deep in murder trouble, when an unbreakable string of circumstantial evidence points directly at him. As the date of his execution nears, the only way his desperate wife can help him is to encourage the detective on the case to think he has a chance with her. Taken from a Cornell Woolrich story, the show tries hard despite its low budget — we can almost feel Mirisch behind the scenes, making sure the picture has heart and sincerity.

John Lawton Dies: Former Uriah Heep Vocalist Was 74
Image
John Lawton, the vocalist for the long-running Uriah Heep during one of the British rock band’s most popular eras, died June 29 of undisclosed causes.

His death was announced last night by the band.

“It is with deep regret that we share the devastating and tragic news of the sudden and totally unexpected passing of John Lawton on 29 June 2021,” the band wrote on its official Twitter page. “John will be greatly missed.”

Named after a character from the Charles Dickens novel David Copperfield, the London band Uriah Heep, formed in 1969, had already found success with vocalist David Byron (including the 1972 hit “Easy Livin'” and 1973’s “Stealin'”) when Lawton replaced the original singer in 1976. During his three-year tenure with the band, Lawton and Uriah Heep recorded three studio albums: 1976’s Firefly, 1977’s Innocent Victim and 1978’s Fallen Angel. The 1979 concert album Live in Europe ’79 also featured Lawton.

Larceny
Image
It happens every time: we want to cruelly betray somebody, but Love keeps getting in the way. When evil Dan Duryea sics con-man louse John Payne on the saintly war widow Joan Caulfield, three other women come tagging along as well, ’cause Payne is just too attractive. The swindle in George Sherman’s unsure noir gets uglier and then loses its way in the third act, with clunker dialogue and a climax that dissolves when it should resolve. Look out for super femme input from Shelley Winters, Dorothy Hart and Patricia Alphin. It’s an early featured role for Winters, and she doesn’t hold back.

Erasure Drop Mystical ‘Fallen Angel’ Video in Time for Halloween
Image
Just in time for Halloween, Erasure have revealed a spooky new video for “Fallen Angel,” a track off their new album The Neon.

Directed by Brad Hammer — who previously worked on the video for “Nerves of Steel” — the clip stars Heidi N Closet from Season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race and model Alexa Abraxas. Heidi N Closet plays an old fortuneteller, reading Tarot cards and predicting the future to Abraxas.

Many elaborate costumes and synth beats later, Heidi N Closet radiantly de-ages. “Fly like a fallen angel/Love just like it’s second nature,...

Anthony James Dies: ‘Unforgiven’ & ‘In The Heat Of The Night’ Actor Was 77
Image
Anthony James, an instantly recognizable character actor who often played the creepy guy including in Best Picture Oscar winners In the Heat of the Night and Unforgiven, died May 26 of cancer. He was 77.

James had made a single brief appearance on a TV series before Norman Jewison cast him as the killer Ralph in 1967’s In the Heat of the Night, starring Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. The film went on to win five Oscars, including Best Picture.

He would bookend his career with a key role in Unforgiven as the slimy brothel owner Skinny Dubois, who ends up on the losing end of Bill Munny’s gun. That 1992 pic starring and helmed by Eastwood won four Academy Awards, including the marquee prize, and would be James’ final screen credit.

It was the second time an Eastwood character would dispatch James in a revenge Western. Two decades earlier, his Cole...

Film Review: Rebels of the Neon God (1992) by Tsai Ming-liang
This was my very first time seeing a film by Tsai Ming-liang. Since I know that I have missed out on this iconic Malaysian born filmmaker, I took the opportunity to watch his debut feature “Rebels of the Neon God” at the occasion of the 69th Berlinale International Film Festival.

Basically “Rebels of the Neon God” is about a boy dropping out of school and how he deals with it. Keeping it secret from his parents, Hsiao Kang (Lee Kang-sheng) quits the tutorial school for college, takes the refund and dives into the night. Another plotline follows two thieves, Ah Tze (Chen Chao-jung) and Ah Ping (Jen Chang-bin), who get together with a girl named Ah Kuei. The boys steal cash from telephone booths and spend their time in arcade halls, bars, and on their scooter saddles. In the course of the film, the two plotlines interfere several times, first by accident,...

Danger Signal
Ah romance! A handsome stranger takes a room in your house, lets you feed him and doesn’t pay the rent — of course he’s the perfect man of your dreams. Excellent WB players Faye Emerson and Zachary Scott enliven an odd mix of moods in a tale of a murderous Bluebeard- boyfriend. Director Robert Florey’s thriller is half stylish spook show, and half romantic sitcom. With Dick Erdman, Rosemary DeCamp and perky Mona Freeman as the little sister who needs to be told, ‘Don’t you do what your big sister done.’

No, it’s not a the-day-after sequel to The Lost Weekend, but a class-act mystery-horror from 20th-Fox, at a time when the studio wasn’t keen on scare shows. Model Falls In Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, Alessandra Ambrosio Retires
This year's Victoria's Secret Fashion show was bittersweet because Alessandra Ambrosio took her final Vs catwalk Sunday night in Shanghai.  Right before the gig, the 36-year-old announced she'd be hanging up her wings after a 17-year run. Still, the spotlight was, at least momentarily, stolen by Ming Xi who went down like a sack of wet cement on the runway. Bella Hadid, Sara Sampaio, Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, Lily Aldridge also did their thing ... no falls though.

The Ultimate War Montage: God v Satan
A video of faith-shaking proportions.

Nothing like the most epic battle of all-time (and even beyond that) to start the day.

Since the dawn of man, depending on what you believe, there has been a war waging between God above and Satan down below for the ultimate of spoils and the most divine of creations: the very soul of humanity. It’s a battle waged in dark alleys and brightly-lit sanctuaries, in high rises and slums, in barrooms and boardrooms and bedrooms and ballrooms, a battle that has outlasted every other war combined and multiplied infinitely, and one that, if ever truly won by either side, would alter the entire fabric of life, the universe, and everything. Again, depending on what you believe.

Either way, though, you better believe it’s a skirmish that makes for great moviemaking. Over the last century both God and the Devil have been portrayed onscreen innumerable times by innumerable types like...

One of the Greatest Film Noir Stars of Them All? Four Crime Classics to Remember
Dana Andrews movies: Film noir actor excelled in both major and minor crime dramas. Dana Andrews movies: First-rate film noir actor excelled in both classics & minor fare One of the best-looking and most underrated actors of the studio era, Dana Andrews was a first-rate film noir/crime thriller star. Oftentimes dismissed as no more than a “dependable” or “reliable” leading man, in truth Andrews brought to life complex characters that never quite fit into the mold of Hollywood's standardized heroes – or rather, antiheroes. Unlike the cynical, tough-talking, and (albeit at times self-delusionally) self-confident characters played by the likes of Alan Ladd, Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and, however lazily, Robert Mitchum, Andrews created portrayals of tortured men at odds with their social standing, their sense of ethics, and even their romantic yearnings. Not infrequently, there was only a very fine line separating his (anti)heroes from most movie villains.

Blu-ray Review: 'Otto Preminger Noir Collection'
★★★★★ Alongside Billy Wilder, Howard Hawks, and John Huston, Otto Preminger was one of the most influential film noir directors in Hollywood in the 1940s and 1950s. This new collection by the BFI gives us three of his finest works, namely Fallen Angel (1945), Whirlpool (1949) and Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950). The collection itself is handsomely, if a little sparsely, presented with a small but informative booklet, and trailers and commentaries for each film.

Open Sesame: The X-Files Season 1’s Mythology
Approximately four months ago, X-Files fans everywhere collectively freaked out as Fox announced its plan for a six-episode revival of the series, more than a decade after the show had ended. An actual UFO sighting could doubtfully cause such an effect from hardcore aficionados who have drooled over Mulder’s deadpan dark humor and Scully’s magnificent eye rolls for years. Then on July 7, Fox released a trailer for the re-airing of the series and called for an X-Files marathon challenge where participants watch an episode per day, as the revival was only 201 days away. Sound on Sight will be joining in the nostalgic fun, posting weekly articles on each season’s mythology, standalone titles, character development, and finally, a spotlight on a favorite episode.

Created by Chris Carter, the first episode of The X-Files aired on September 10, 1993. For each season, we will be dividing titles into those that follow...

Disturbing Teaser for American Horror Story: Freakshow
Update: This teaser has been confirmed to be a fake. It's still a great fan-made teaser though!

FX has premiered the first disturbing teaser trailer for American Horror Story: Freakshow. It's called "Fallen Angel," and it gives us a look at a young woman seemingly graced with angelic wings. Of course, the magic is taken away when you see that the wings are being operated by a creepy-ass clown! Yikes! This is going to be a sinister and dark chapter for the horror anthology series.

The series stars Jessica Lange, Michael Chiklis, Sarah Paulson, Bates, Angela Bassett, Jamie Brewer, Denis O’Hare, Wes Bentley, and Frances Conroy. The story takes place in the 1950s and follows a traveling freakshow. My twisted mind can't wait to watch this!

We know that it's subtitle this year is "Freak Show," that it is set in the year 1950, in Jupiter, Florida, and that it's the last season for series mainstay Jessica Lange (joined by many of the gore-drenched "American Horror Story" regulars, including Evan Peters, Frances Conroy, Sarah Paulson, and Emma Roberts). The show doesn't return until around Halloween, but with the premiere of the similarly spooky "The Strain" last night on FX, it seemed like a good enough time to start the long, teasing preamble to the series' return. And this teaser is spooky.

The teaser is brief but evocative.

American Horror Story: Freakshow Gets The Fan-Made Teaser Treatment
There’s still a few months to go before the fourth season of hit FX anthology series American Horror Story: Freakshow debuts, but today, a great fan-made teaser trailer has landed in the web, one so compelling that many assumed it was official.

The 22-second clip, titled “Fallen Angel,” shows a horrifying image of a woman who looks like she has wings that were screwed into her back. Behind her, the wings are being maneuvered by a creepy, painted-faced man in evil clown attire. Needless to say, this clip, although revealing nothing in the way of spoilers, gave fans a taste of just how terrifying the new season of American Horror Story might be.

Although the trailer didn’t come directly from the network, according to THR, it is available on their official YouTube page.

American Horror Story: Freakshow will feature veteran cast members Sarah Paulson (who will...

‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Fan-Made Teaser: Fallen Angel & Killer Clown [Updated]
Update: FX has confirmed that this preview is not official.

Since debuting on FX in 2011, Ryan Murphy’s frightening anthology series, American Horror Story, has served up three highly-watched seasons of tales about ghosts, mental patients and witches. But the upcoming fourth season, premiering in October, will take viewers to a completely new and unexpected place: Jupiter, Florida, home of one of the last remaining freak shows in the 1950s.

Emmy-winner and star Jessica Lange is returning to the series yet again, though it’ll unfortunately be her last season on the show. For her final episodes, she’ll be surrounded by most of the core cast from seasons 2 and 3 in new roles, including Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Frances Conroy, Denis O’Hare, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Emma Roberts. A new addition, Michael Chiklis will make his first appearance on the series as Bates’ ex-husband and Peters’ father.

As usual,...

'Noah' Family Review: 5 Things Every Parent Should Know About the Religious Epic
Darren Aronofsky has been called a visionary director, and he's taken that vision and applied it to one of the most widely known Bible stories: Noah's Ark. "Noah" isn't a verse-by-verse adaptation of the Genesis tale, but it is inspired by it, with some embellishments and alterations that may excite some viewers but upset those who feel any movie about the bible should be a literalist interpretation. Starring Russell Crowe as Noah and Jennifer Connelly as his steadfast wife, the movie is intense, philosophical, and thought-provoking. The younger cast is equally as wonderful: Douglas Booth as Noah's loyal eldest son Shem; Logan Lerman as his questioning middle son Ham; and Emma Watson as Noah's daughter-in-law Ila. Consider taking your mature teens if you want a movie that will make you think.

The PG-13 rating is "for violence, disturbing images and brief suggestive content." This isn't a mild Sunday School tale; it's intense,...

Dlc Review: ‘Dead Rising 3: Fallen Angel’
Another month, another installment in Dead Rising 3’s “Untold Stories of Los Perdidos.” Last month’s “Operation Broken Eagle” was a fun-but-flawed addition to the game, focusing not on new series hero Nick Ramos, but on the stunningly generic special ops soldier Adam Kane, which stripped almost all of the personality from a lighthearted game and made it grim and gritty…and not really in a good way. However, it still deserved a look simply for being more Dead Rising 3, flawed or not.

Unfortunately, the trend continues in the second “Untold Story,” the ominously titled “Fallen Angel.” Going to the opposite side of the coin, the “illegal” Angel Quijano is the focal point, and this Dlc seems to fall into similar issues as its predecessors, but in a completely different way.

In the world of Dead Rising 3, those who have been infected with the zombie virus are forced to get “chipped,...

WWE: Has Bray Wyatt Resurrected The Army Of Darkness?
WWE.com

I’ve heard it said that somewhere between science and superstition, there is another world. A world of darkness.

It’s a world that haunted my dreams as a child, from the first time I saw Kevin Sullivan and his Army of Darkness spreading their eerily twisted messages across the Nwa.

“Our cause is not for evil,” said Sullivan during an interview for Championship Wrestling from Florida in 1982. “Because all we’re looking for is refuge from this cold, cruel world.”

Ring a bell?

Sullivan’s dark mystique, his messianic charisma, his penchant for dark riddles — they all seem to have been resurrected in the form of Bray Wyatt.

Take, for instance, these words recently delivered by the leader of the Wyatt Family to nemesis John Cena:

“This is a terrible world,” Wyatt drawled. “A cold, cold dark and lonely place. You stand for these illusions. But...

Dead Rising 3: Chaos Rising Dlc Review
Continuing on in support of its season pass for Dead Rising 3, Capcom Vancouver has released Chaos Rising, the third episode in the game’s set of Dlc-based Untold Stories of Los Perdidos mini-narratives. Released at a $9.99 price point like its two decent but wholly unspectacular predecessors, this add-on marks the debut of yet another playable character and introduces a handful of new items into the fold, in addition to a hefty amount of additional collectibles. In the end, though, it’s simply more of the same formula we’ve become accustomed to from the Canadian developer and its Japanese parent company, and the result is more of the same. The difference this time around, though, is that there’s a shorter run-time to be found, as well as a general lack of overly interesting content.

The star of Chaos Rising‘s brief show is one Hunter Thibodeaux, who begins his...

Dead Rising 3: Fallen Angel Dlc Review
It’s a dark night in the apocalyptic city of Los Perdidos and its zombified inhabitants are agitated. They’re out for blood (well, human thinkers to be exact), and are ready to latch on to anyone who is brave enough to walk by. That describes every nighttime cycle in Capcom Vancouver’s Dead Rising 3, but this particular one is a bit different because a new character is walking the streets in an attempt to not only survive, but also assist her peers. Her name is Angel, and she’s an Illegal – an infected human who lives off of the grid, in safe houses, while the army hunts her kind.

Angel, whose full name is Angel Quijano, happens to be the main character of Fallen Angel, the second Episodes of Los Perdidos chapter to release as Dlc for the game. She’s presented as a tough-as-nails Latino chick, who prefers an alcohol-induced state over sobriety.

Interview: Mads Mikkelsen talks ‘Hannibal’
Despite strong skepticism from fans of the original movies, Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal has been a surprising success for NBC, pushing the envelope of what can be seen on traditional Us network television. Whilst the series has an excellent pedigree, both in front and behind the screen, the true star of the series is Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen. Taking on the iconic role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Mikkelsen – probably best known for his villainous role as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale – has broken down all expectations and crafted a new and exciting take on Thomas Harris’ cannibalistic serial killer.

In the first of our new collaborations with AskMen we got to chat with Mikkelsen about the show and his role…

Hannibal, despite the cannibalism, is really likeable in this series. How did you go about making a serial killer so empathetic?

Mads Mikkelsen: I don’t think we’re...

20 Questions With Comic Artist J.K. Woodward
J.K. Woodward is best known to comic fans for his extensive run on Fallen Angel with Peter David at Idw, but there is so much more to him than that. He’s painted Edgar Allen Poe, the X-Men, Doctor Who, the crew of the starship Enterprise, and monsters big and small. Due to his dedication to the medium, and a fantastic style, he has gained quite a following, and never seems to be looking for work. J.K. is always willing to have a conversation with fans over a few beers at a convention, and is very open about his life and creative process on his blog and on J.K.’s Happy Hour podcast. Body of Proof Review: Hot Faces of Philadelphia
"Fallen Angel" showed us just how hot Kate could be when paired with the right partner.

In Body of Proof season 2, I hated Kate with Megan's ex Tod. I never felt any chemistry between them and I always believed that Kate could do much better.

In walked Sergei. He had it all. The handsome face, the body, the sexy accent and the dangerous mystique. The two quickly ended up between the sheets in some very racy bedroom scenes. And between Sergei in a towel and Kate in some fabulous lingerie, there was plenty of eye candy to go around.

But Kate's love life quickly took a turn for the worse as she lamented to Megan in this Body of Proof quote…

Kate: The first guy I like turns out to be a murderer.

Megan: Maybe a multiple murderer. | permalink

Leave it to Megan to be supportive.

The opening scenes of...
