They kicked things off with one of the heaviest Skid Row tracks in “Slave to the Grind” and proceeded to hit the obligatory hits, a cover (“Psycho Therapy” by the Ramones), and more heavy metal (“Monkey Business”). An encore of “Riot Act...

The film, Little Richard: I Am Everything (w/t), will take a deep dive into the life and career of the iconic musician, who did what he felt, and felt what he did—”at all costs”—presenting never-seen-before archival footage, as well as interviews with loved ones, colleagues, contemporary musicians and historians.

Season 6 of “The Masked Singer” premiered on Wednesday night, introducing five new mystery celebrities belting it out in wild, extravagant costumes. After each singer from Group A took the stage, it was the Octopus sent packing first following his performance of “Tutti Frutti” by Little Richard. The towering invertebrate was revealed to be none other than eight-time NBA all-star, Dwight Howard.

You got us, The Masked Singer. We thought we knew all your tricks, and still, you got us.
The Season 6 premiere on Wednesday promised a double elimination, and it delivered… technically. Of the five new covert crooners we met during the hour, two were called upon to leave in the final moments. But only one was unmasked, leaving viewers to have to come back for the premiere’s second half — airing Thursday at 8/7c on Fox — to find out exactly who was wearing that (truly terrifying) costume.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read ahead if you have not watched the Season 6 season premiere, part one, of “The Masked Singer,” which aired September 22 on Fox.
Basketball star Dwight Howard will at least have more time now to focus on bringing a championship back to Los Angeles. The Lakers player was the first celebrity to be unmasked on Season 6 of Fox’s “The Masked Season,” which returned on Wednesday — the first of a two-night premiere and double elimination.
The other eliminated contestant, Mother Nature, won’t be unmasked until Thursday’s episode.
Howard wore the Octopus costume, and sang “Tutti Frutti,” by Little Richard. He said it was his mom’s favorite show, hence the choice to join “Masked Singer.”
“I enjoyed every moment,” Howard told Variety in his exit interview. “Oh man, it was hot and sweaty. I couldn’t really move my head a lot like I wanted to.

(Warning: This post contains spoilers for Night 1 of “The Masked Singer” Season 6 premiere.)
“The Masked Singer” returned to Fox Wednesday with the first half of its two-night Season 6 premiere. The episode ended with a double elimination, as promised in promos, with a previously unannounced twist: Though two contestants were cut from Group A, only one was unmasked.
That’s right, fans will have to tune in Thursday for Night 2 of the singing competition’s sixth-season premiere to find out the identity of the now-eliminated singer Mother Nature. That episode will also see the addition of two Wildcard contestants to the lineup of three remaining competitors from Group A, with one more elimination that night.
We have no idea who those Wildcards will be or who is getting kicked off tomorrow night. So let’s go over what we do know right now, which are the two contestants who won’t...

HBO’s latest blockbuster drama effort, Lovecraft Country, is a unique Lovecraftian beast. As adapted by Matt Ruff’s novel of the same name, the show takes classic horror, sci-fi, and adventure tropes and adapts them into a timely story of American racism.
Though the series is certainly timely, it’s also timeless. As evidenced by our helpful explainer article, it wasn’t immediately clear when Lovecraft Country even took place. That’s partly because the Jim Crow era of American institutionalized racism was a lengthy one. And the fact that Atticus “Tic” Freeman was a war veteran didn’t help out much. Which war coincided with “whites only” restaurants and sundown towns? World War II, The Korean War, The Vietnam War – take your pick, really. That pleasant disorientation is enhanced by an equally disorienting soundtrack.
Rest assured, Lovecraft Country takes place in the mid 1950s. But the show’s...

Last summer, Liza Richardson read the script for the first episode of Lovecraft Country, and she tried to wrap her head around how she might choose music for the show.
“I could tell how unique it was,” the veteran music supervisor says. The series, which is set in 1955, stars Jonathan Majors as Atticus Freeman. In the first episode, he — along with Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) and his childhood friend Leti (Jurnee Smollett) — takes a journey across Jim Crow America in search of his father, uncovering monsters both fictional and very real.

“Our Culture Can’t Be Canceled” was the theme of the night at the 2020 BET Awards, which saw a powerful opening performance by Public Enemy followed by host Amanda Seales’ monologue addressing the current state of the country and several over-the-top performances. Little Richard was celebrated at the 2020 BET Awards. On Sunday, Wayne Brady led a special tribute performance for the late music icon, who passed away in May at the age of 87. Channeling Little Richard's eccentric flare, Brady donned a metallic suit as he delivered an electric medley of Little Richard's greatest hits, kicking off the at-home performance with "Lucille" from his piano. Next, he segued into "Good Golly, Miss Molly" and "Long Tall Sally." To conclude the spectacular tribute, Brady finished with Little Richard's hit song "Tutti Frutti" and showed off his moves with an epic dance break. Ahead of his performance, Brady took to social...

He was born the third of 12 children in Macon, Georgia, on December 5th, 1932, though he sometimes said it was December 25th, perhaps to honor Christ his savior, perhaps to burnish his own legend, or more likely both. His parents wanted to call him Ricardo, but the birth certificate said Richard, his maternal grandfather’s name. It was a sign from the start that he was no one thing, had no one identity.
He was different, born that way: His right leg was shorter than the left. He walked with short steps.

Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Busby Berkeley's The Gang's All Here (1943) is showing December 25, 2017 - January 24, 2018 on Mubi in the United States. Busby Berkeley makes no attempt to hide, or even downplay, the glorious Technicolor fabrication of The Gang’s All Here. From its very first scene, as an apparent bit of dramatic action is revealed to be an elaborate stage production, which then, in turn, detaches from the platform and enters the audience, the wall between illusion and actuality comes joyously crumbling down. From there, the crowd of spectators become themselves part of the show—we’re all part of the show when it comes to this 1943 musical comedy, accepting and delighting in its escapist frivolity. Favoring overt exaggeration and artful indulgence over any semblance of realism, Berkeley engages a gleeful composition of color, music, dance, calculated choreography, and exotic, albeit superficial,...

A lot of us grew up on classic animated shows like Batman: The Animated Series, Animaniacs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and X-Men. Now several of the popular voice artists involved with these series are assembling for a new animated show called The Gang's All Here.
The series is being produced by Rob Paulsen, who previously worked as a voice actor on Tmnt, Pinky and the Brain, Animaniacs. He teamed up with screenwriter Byron Burton to work on the series. Apparently, Burton pitched the series idea to Paulsen earlier this year at a fan convention, and Paulsen liked what he came up with!
As far as the voiceover cast goes, Kevin Conroy (Batman) and Cal Doff (Wolverine) have jumped on board! Oh yeah! Voice over director Andrea Romano is also involved. She has worked on several of the DC animated productions over the years.

Fourth of July movies: A few recommended titles that should help you temporarily escape current global madness Two thousand and seventeen has been a weirder-than-usual year on the already pretty weird Planet Earth. Unsurprisingly, this Fourth of July, the day the United States celebrates its Declaration of Independence from the British Empire, has been an unusual one as well. Instead of fireworks, (at least some) people's attention has been turned to missiles – more specifically, a carefully timed North Korean intercontinental ballistic missile test indicating that Kim Jong-un could theoretically gain (or could already have?) the capacity to strike North America with nuclear weapons. Then there were right-wing trolls & history-deficient Twitter users berating National Public Radio for tweeting the Declaration of Independence, 140 characters at a time. Besides, a few days ago the current U.S. president retweeted a video of himself body-slamming and choking a representation of CNN – courtesy of a gif originally created by a far-right Internet...

Dana Andrews movies: Film noir actor excelled in both major and minor crime dramas. Dana Andrews movies: First-rate film noir actor excelled in both classics & minor fare One of the best-looking and most underrated actors of the studio era, Dana Andrews was a first-rate film noir/crime thriller star. Oftentimes dismissed as no more than a “dependable” or “reliable” leading man, in truth Andrews brought to life complex characters that never quite fit into the mold of Hollywood's standardized heroes – or rather, antiheroes. Unlike the cynical, tough-talking, and (albeit at times self-delusionally) self-confident characters played by the likes of Alan Ladd, Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and, however lazily, Robert Mitchum, Andrews created portrayals of tortured men at odds with their social standing, their sense of ethics, and even their romantic yearnings. Not infrequently, there was only a very fine line separating his (anti)heroes from most movie villains.

Netflix's Gilmore Girls revival feels seamlessly like the victory lap the show wasn't able to take in its final season...
You'd think we'd be used to this by now – a beloved property rising from the ashes, saved by a streaming platform, and moulded into nostalgia fuel. There was Veronica Mars and The X-Files, and soon there'll be Prison Break. But Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life has seemed bigger than those, more anticipated by a greater number of people.
See related Close To The Enemy episode 2 review Close To The Enemy episode 1 review Wolf Hall: controversy, adaptation and poetic licence
That could, of course, be due to how long, hard and creatively Netflix has been pushing the revival. In an age when event television has ceased to be, somehow it's managed to create the kind of buzz around the show usually reserved for your Walking Deads or Game Of Thrones.

MTV held its annual Teen Wolf panel at Comic-Con this afternoon, where the network announced that the show was renewed for Season 6. The hit series was actually given a Season 5 renewal during last year's Comic-Con panel, so perhaps this is the start of an Sdcc tradition. The network also gave fans a look at the rest of Season 5 with a new trailer.
The show was given a 20-episode renewal last year, but the exact episode count for Season 6 has yet to be revealed. It was confirmed that stars Dylan O'Brien and Tyler Posey will be back for Season 6, although Tyler Hoechlin will not be returning as Derek. Series creator Jeff Davis encouraged fans who want the actor to return, to tweet him and ask him to come back. Dylan Sprayberry also teased that there will be a new conflict between Scott and Liam.
"There will be some conflict with Scott and I.

Eureka Entertainment has announced today that Busby Berkeley's 1943 technicolor musical comedy The Gang's All Here will be joining the Masters of Cinema series in a brand new Blu-ray edition on 15 September. I must confess to being something of a Berkeley novice and know precious little about his films other than their famous intricately choreographed dance numbers, which became something of a calling card for the filmmaker.
