Made for Kids Who Loved It

I saw this movie when it first came out. My age group cohort, the males anyway, still remember this movie fondly. Every kid saw it. Of course it's ridiculous, in the same way the Three Stooges are ridiculous. We wouldn't criticize our three stooge friends for not being realistic.

At the time this movie came out, Americans didn't know about concentration camps and the Holocaust. Thus, the silliness of this film can be expected to fall flat for adults who watch it now. However, laughing at Hitler gang movies was quite common in 42, 43, 44. It was a common recreation.

I will also add that this was Ward Bond's only starring role in his long movie career.

This film represents one of a small handful of American films which featured the word Hitler or Hitler's, and both referencing Adolf Hitler, in their titles and were ones made around the time of the Second World War. The other films include Les enfants d'Hitler (1943); Hitler's Madman (1943) aka Hitler's Hangman; Hitler et sa clique (1944) aka Hitler & Co.; the documentary short, Hitler Lives (1945); The Strange Death of Adolf Hitler (1943); Hitler's Women aka Femmes enchaînées (1943); the comic short, The Devil with Hitler (1942) and Hitler: Beast of Berlin (1939).

Goofs
The enormous swastika on the banner hanging on the wall of Colonel Hecht's office at Dachau is the wrong way round (as can be seen at a glance by comparing it with the swastika on Hecht's armband, both of which are frequently simultaneously visible within the same shot).
