The opening sequence contains actual footage from the famous Miles Brothers film A Trip Down Market Street Before the Fire (1906), which was filmed on a street car just days before the San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906. The Miles Brothers followed up with a film down Market Street after the earthquake which showed the devastation.
City of Paris was a famous old San Francisco department store. Built in the Beaux Arts style, the establishment opened in 1896. When Neiman Marcus took the Union Square property over in 1971, the famous dome and atrium were carefully preserved. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a California landmark.
Shot in 20 days, with a total budget of $286,000.
George Brent was originally cast opposite Ruth Chatterton but withdrew to star in 42ème rue (1933).
Bernhard Kaun composed special music for the trailer.
