Final film of Billie Dove. She retired after this film both to raise a family and in anger at the "behind-the-scenes" interference from William Randolph Hearst, Marion Davies' lover and the producer of the film. Dove appeared in a small part 30 years later in Le seigneur d'Hawaï (1962), but her scene was eventually cut from the film before its release.
Though Jimmy Durante is given star billing, he is only seen for a few minutes entertaining at a party. William Randolph Hearst, Davies' paramour and the producer of the film, often trimmed or even cut scenes out of films in which attention was diverted from Ms. Davies.
One of several films in which Marion Davies exhibited her talent for doing celebrity impressions, in this case Greta Garbo opposite Jimmy Durante's send-up of John Barrymore in "Grand Hotel" (1932), which was released the same year as this film. Both pictures were directed by Edmund Goulding.
One hour into the film, Marion Davies (Blondie) addresses Billy Dove's character as "Lurlene Callabash". In later years Jimmy Durante would often close his TV, radio and nightclub appearances with "Goodnight Mrs. Callabash, wherever you are".
