Swifties weren’t ready for it, but the newly released music video for “…Ready for It?” contains specific Easter eggs and could be validating some popular fan theories. Let the games begin!
In the anime-inspired visual, Taylor Swift plays with themes seen in sci-fi films such as Tron and Blade Runner as well as Ghost in the Shell, specifically Major Motoko’s cyborg shell. A little bit of the video game franchise, Final Fantasy, perhaps?
And the latest Joseph Kahn-directed footage even contains follow-up references originally made in the “Look What You Made Me Do” video as well as her past music videos.

They can be set anywhere from Australia to Pakistan – and increasingly it’s women who are shooting from the hip. With new westerns such as My Pure Land and Brimstone, the gunslinger genre continues to reinvent itself
Always changing, the western never changes. Whatever era it is, the essence remains. If I told you about a pivotal scene in which a gunslinger turns to the camera and stares, hard-eyed, at the audience, I might be describing The Great Train Robbery, made in 1903, a silent cinema milestone whose star, Justus D Barnes, was a middle-aged stage actor. Or I could mean My Pure Land, a new film about three women in rural Pakistan defending their home from bandits. Its star is Suhaee Abro, a classically trained dancer in her first major role. Thousands of miles and more than a century apart, she and Barnes share a western moment.

When one is in the mood for a romantic stroll through autumnal New England, the stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne offer transport. His fables and novels evoke that era with atmosphere, bringing the reader into a landscape of brisk wind and rich colors, surrounded by the possibility of enigmatic sorcery. Amongst the dying forests and chilly winds, his characters encounter demonic entities, ghosts, and their darkest temptations. His collection of Twice Told Tales, published at the start of his career, showcases a broad example of his themes.
Some of Hawthorne's tales are simply depictions of pastoral New England life; describing a child’s view of her small town in “Little Annie’s Ramble,” or observing village courtship as a storm approaches in “Sights from a Steeple.” Morality inspires and buoys almost all of his substantial stories, often in rather surprising ways. When writing about the Puritans, whose culture is based on infamously rigid moral standards,...

The craft of main title design has become more prestigious in TV since “Mad Men” and “Game of Thrones” won Emmys in 2008 and 2011. And this season the race pits three Best Drama contenders (“Westworld,” “Stranger Things,” “The Crown”) against Limited Series contender (“Feud: Bette and Joan”) and “American Gods.”
Three of the five main title designs come from Patrick Clair (“Westworld,” The Crown,” “American Gods”), last year’s winner for “The Man in the High Castle,” and a previous winner for “True Detective” (2014). If the goal is to encapsulate the essence of a show in a graphically striking, attention-grabbing manner, then all five shows fit the job.
As far as winning the race, “Westworld” stands out for its complex design, poetic beauty, and melancholy mood, But both “Feud” and “Stranger Things” boast distinctive retro vibes— that brilliantly play off the nostalgia appeal of their series.

While there may be a lot of focus on Twin Peaks, there is of course one more show that refuses to be ignored. The American Gods finale is here, and we finally get to meet Easter (Kristin Chenoweth). More importantly the Gods have a face-off that may set the scene for a war in Season two.
Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) and Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) arrive at a party to try to recruit Ostara, also known as Easter. With Laura (Emily Browning) and Mad Sweeney (Pablo Shreiber) also arriving looking for help with resurrection, it doesn’t take long for a few newer Gods to join the party.

For the last seven weeks, “American Gods” has warned us of a coming war. One by one, the gods of centuries past made their way from the pages of global lore into the twisted landscape of this Starz show, where the mortal and immortal co-mingle and their fates are intertwined. With “Come to Jesus,” a grand finale that cobbled together all the disparate elements that made the series compelling viewing, Season 1 of “American Gods” reached its creative peak and paved the way for its cosmic tug-of-war to continue.
Though this season has delighted in its own diversions, crossing national and metaphysical boundaries to bring its infamous cast of characters together, keeping these factions separate for so long made their convergence all the sweeter. Mr. Wednesday, fresh from offing Vulcan, tows Shadow along to the house of Ostara, introducing a perfectly cast Kristin Chenoweth to an already loaded ensemble. While Wednesday...

There was more than enough narrative complexity for editors to tackle in Emmy contenders “The Crown,” “American Gods,” “This Is Us,” “Fargo,” and “Five Came Back.” But through skill and finesse, they helped make these shows compelling and relevant by cutting through the multiple strands of history, mythology, melodrama, and black comedy.
“The Crown” focused on the public and private personas of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) in post-war England; “American Gods” explored how Old and New Gods fight for attention in modern society; “This Is Us” chose a non-linear structure to show the influence of the past on millennial siblings; “Fargo” dealt with twin brothers (Ewan McGregor) in a third season of absurd crime shenanigans; and “Five Came Back” revealed how the World War II propaganda campaign changed the lives of directors Frank Capra, John Ford, John Huston, George Stevens, and William Wyler.

When a show is steeped in politics and culture, costumes are the swiftest path to communicating what’s at stake. In “The Crown,” the wardrobe of Queen Elizabeth II (Claire Foy) expresses her rite of passage inside and outside the palace; in “The Handmaid’s Tale,” red dresses symbolize menstrual blood and political rage; in “American Gods,” costumes express the battle between the Old and New Gods; in “Feud,” wardrobes underscore the bitter rivalry between Joan Crawford (Jessica Lange) and Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon); and in “Hairspray Live!,” the flamboyant costumes help unite Baltimore during the civil rights movement of the ’60s.

The wedding and coronation dresses offered distinct challenges for costume designer Michele Clapton (three-time Emmy winner for “Game of Thrones”). Authenticity, particularly the iconic silhouette, was important for the wedding dress, as was a comfortable fit for Foy as Elizabeth. “We altered it around the arms...

In new television series “American Gods,” adapted by showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green from Neil Gaiman’s 2001 novel about the epic battle between the Old and New Gods, we have a superhero fantasy for adults. In this Starz drama, the Old are obsessed with faith, the New with branding.
Costume designer Suttirat Larlarb and cinematographer Darran Tiernan felt they needed to ground the Gods in a believable reality before going wild with visual eye candy. That meant using protagonist Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) as an anchor. He’s a former convict with a crisis of faith, who’s recruited to protect con artist Mr. Wednesday/Odin (Ian McShane).

Let’s analyze the new world Bryan Fuller is bringing to our TV screens.
The promotional posters for Starz’s American Gods feature the real-life manifestations of Neil Gaiman’s original characters. From Shadow Moon to Mr. Nancy to Easter, each of the characters are framed in a world that reflects their (deceptive) personalities. However, while the backgrounds of each characters’ visual profile differs, the letters that are placed centre-frame do not.
These letters form “Omg,” being both a play on the show’s name as well as an apt reaction to its opening titles, which Starz recently released one month before American Gods’ premiere on April 30th.

From The Kettering Incident to Rosehaven, the isolation and dark beauty of Australia’s island state is bringing resounding success to the screen
Tasmania is having a moment. Undeniably, the popularity of David Walsh’s Museum of Old and New Art has consolidated the state’s reputation as a cultural tourism destination. But right now something else is happening too: Tasmania is emerging as a star of film and television.
This year saw the debut of eight-part Foxtel/BBC Worldwide thriller The Kettering Incident in July, while new ABC comedy Rosehaven premiered in October. They are high profile, well-received shows which seem likely to go to a second season. Though poles apart genre-wise, both are set in small-town Tasmania and riff on notions of otherness and isolation while highlighting the dark beauty of the landscape.

Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

The third trailer has been released for Hell or High Water, Starred Up director David Mackenzie‘s familial outlaw tale of revenge and righteousness starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, and Jeff Bridges. With less than a month away from release, this third trailer, shorter than the previous ones, is a more dialogue-constant approach, filling viewers into the plot instead of the pistolaro stylings of the first two.
We said in our review, “David McKenzie’s Hell or High Water is a gritty, darkly humorous, and fiendishly violent neo-western. Or, in other words, the type of film you might expect from a non-American director working in the United States. It borrows heavily from the Coen brothers and Cormac McCarthy, but it does so very well, thanks largely to a terrific script from Taylor Sheridan, the red-hot actor-turned-screenwriter who broke onto the scene last year with Sicario. It might usher in a...

The second trailer has dropped for David Mackenzie’s Hell or High Water, the director’s follow-up to the excellent Starred Up. The script, penned by Sicario’s Taylor Sheridan, centers on two ex-con brothers who start robbing banks in a desperate attempt to save their family farm. The new trailer covers the narrative trappings and shows off a bit of the hyperrealism in gun fights that Mackenzie previously delivered with a prison-yard scrap. There’s also the addition of quotes from the enthusiastic Cannes response. Oh, and also Ben Foster has a killer mustache.

One of the Cannes premieres we’re most looking forward was a late addition: Starred Up director David Mackenzie‘s Texas-set drama Hell or High Water. Featuring a script by Sicario writer Taylor Sheridan, Chris Pine and Ben Foster lead the story of two brothers — a divorced father and ex-con — who plan a bank robbery to save their farm, and the illustrious Jeff Bridges as the Texas ranger who’s soon on their heels. Ahead of a premiere in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes, the first trailer has now landed ahead of an August release.
As evidenced in Mackenzie’s last film, he knows how to craft a great deal of suspense, and looks to do so on a much bigger scale here. “The movie has a lot of themes that are running in the American election, really: guns, oil, banks,” Mackenzie tells NY Times. Check out the...

This weekend Disney’s The Jungle Book has proved who is the real “jungle VIP” by debuting at number one at the UK box office with an estimated £9.5 million opening weekend. The ‘baloo-ming’ marvellous result sees the film become the third biggest opening this year following only Batman vs Superman and Deadpool with critics calling the film out as a cinematic experience not to be missed. The result also sees Disney take both 1st and 2nd place at the UK box office with Disney’sZootropolis still delighting audiences.
Jungle Fever has been taking the world by storm. In India the film has already overtaken the entire lifetime of Titanic and Life of Pi within just one week and is the third biggest Hollywood release ever, only behind Furious 7 and Jurassic World.
Meanwhile in the Us an estimated $103.6 million box office takings were registered, making it the second largest April opening in industry history.

Released in 1986, Bubble Bobble was one of the best two-player arcade games ever. Let's make a journey to the cave of monsters...
What’s the greatest co-op videogame of all time? Portal 2? Gauntlet? Left 4 Dead 2, maybe? For me, Bubble Bobble has to rank somewhere near the top of the list. A single-screen platform game where dragons blow bubbles and hooded enemies respond by rolling giant cookies along the floor, Bubble Bobble is still one of the best two-player arcade games ever.
Bubble Bobble’s enemy-nobbling mechanic appears to have its roots in Universal's seminal 1980 coin-op, Space Panic, where aliens are killed by first digging a hole, waiting for the enemies to fall in, and then bashing them while they’re trapped. Bubble Bobble gives this idea a bouncy new twist; this time, you blow bubbles, which encase enemies on contact, and then rush up and jump on them -...
