This Is So Impressive: Russell Crowes Divisive $359M Epic Gets Glowing Review From VFX Artists 10 Years Later
Image
Russell Crowes divisive epic movie Noah gets a glowing review from VFX artists 10 years after its original release. Inspired by Noahs Ark, the biblical drama follows a man (Crowe), chosen by God to construct a vessel for his family and various animals to brave an impending apocalyptic flood. Along with Crowe, the cast of Noah includes Jennifer Connelly, Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Winstone, and more. The film, directed by Darren Aronofsky, earned over $359 million at the box office, and though met with polarizing reactions, audiences praised the effects.

In the recent "VFX Artists React to Bad & Great CGI" video, Corridor Crew looked at several moments from Noah. When it came to digitally creating all of those animals, Niko explained: "This is so impressive because you have to have an artist effectively model each one of these creatures." They also discussed the process, with Jordan revealing how skeletons were made for certain animals,...

Why It's Always Raining In The Movie Se7en: David Fincher's Deeper Meaning Explained
Image
The constant rain in David Fincher's Se7en was a deliberate choice to create atmosphere and maximize shooting efficiency. The rain reinforces the film's themes of sin and nihilism and contributes to the noir-esque visual language. The rain also ties into the biblical allusions in Se7en.

The constant rain in David Fincher’s bleak neo-noir Se7en creates a memorable atmosphere, but there were also practical reasons for employing it in the film. With its dark tone, engrossing plot, and top-notch cast, Se7en is rightly remembered as one of David Fincher’s best films. The thriller follows Mills (Brad Pitt) and Somerset (Morgan Freeman), two homicide detectives on the trail of an elusive serial killer whose murders are modeled after the seven deadly sins.

Se7en’s dark tone and harrowing ending were considered a serious gamble upon the film’s release in 1995. After a disastrous test screening, director David...

Indiana Jones Novels That Would Have Made Great Films
Image
Indiana Jones is one of cinema's most memorable heroes. As Harrison Ford finally hangs up the hat and the whip after playing the character for a final time in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, many fans of the franchise are looking back on the franchise with fondness.

One notable thing about the franchise is how much time had passed between sequels, as there was a 19-year gap between The Last Crusade and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, as well as another 15-year gap between that film and The Dial of Destiny. Although the franchise ends with 5 films, there easily could have been more films to make.

Why Was Angelina Important? Manifest Finally Explains Her Cal Connection
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Manifest season 4 part 2

It took two years, but Manifest finally explained Angelina’s mysterious connection to Cal. Introduced in season 3, Angelina’s significance to the plot has long been a bit of an enigma for the series. The passengers have known since her introduction that Angelina was important in some way, with her later actions only complicating this mystery.

Cal believed wholeheartedly in Manifest season 3 that the Flight 828 passengers needed Angelina, presumable to beat the Death Date and save the Lifeboat. How she was meant to help became all the more confusing when she turned into a murderer in the season 3 finale. Angelina hardly felt like a character that the passengers were meant to depend on, with her story in Manifest season 4, part 1 drastically reducing her redemption chances. What’s more, the show made her the biggest threat to the Lifeboat by having her acquire permanent Omega Sapphire powers.

Zeke’s Return In Manifest Season 4 Reveals A Massive Callings Twist
Image
Zeke’s return is a lore-changing twist for Manifest season 4, part 2. Played by Matt Long, Zeke lost his life in the Manifest season 4, part 1 finale. However, the trailer for the show’s final episodes confirm the character’s time on the show hasn’t ended. He’ll be back, and as the footage reveals, it won’t be through a flashback.

Since the second half of season 1, Zeke has played a crucial role in the journey of the Flight 828 passengers. Even after beating his own Death Date in the season 2 finale, Zeke continued to be vital to the story. He proved his importance to their destiny in the Manifest season 4, part 1 finale when he made the ultimate sacrifice to save Cal. This moment seemingly completed his arc. However, it appears the show still has room for him. The Manifest season 4, part 2 trailer revealed a scene where Zeke communicates with Michaela in a mystery location.

Indiana Jones 5 Is Ignoring George Lucas' Biggest Piece Of Advice
Image
The Indiana Jones franchise swings back into fans' lives with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny this summer, but Indy 5 might be in trouble if it's already ignoring George Lucas's biggest piece of advice. The trio of Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, and Harrison Ford have been involved with each film to feature the titular globe-trotting archeologist, with Spielberg either directing or producing, Ford starring, and Lucas writing the story, which always focuses on a real archeological object imbued with supernatural powers. In order to adhere to a winning formula, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull took fifteen years to generate Indy's next adventure.

Fans thought Indy 4 didn't quite hit the mark with a plot about extraterrestrial beings, and now fifteen years after that, they're concerned that Indiana Jones 5 might be another disappointment. Lucas has always tried to carefully balance the more fantastical elements of...

Nasty Politics and Eyebrow-Raising Gossip During Hollywood's Golden Age: Brackett's Must-Read Diaries
Charles Brackett ca. 1945: Hollywood diarist and Billy Wilder's co-screenwriter (1936–1949) and producer (1945–1949). Q&A with 'Charles Brackett Diaries' editor Anthony Slide: Billy Wilder's screenwriter-producer partner in his own words Six-time Academy Award winner Billy Wilder is a film legend. He is renowned for classics such as The Major and the Minor, Double Indemnity, Sunset Blvd., Witness for the Prosecution, Some Like It Hot, and The Apartment. The fact that Wilder was not the sole creator of these movies is all but irrelevant to graduates from the Auteur School of Film History. Wilder directed, co-wrote, and at times produced his films. That should suffice. For auteurists, perhaps. But not for those interested in the whole story. That's one key reason why the Charles Brackett diaries are such a great read. Through Brackett's vantage point, they offer a welcome – and unique – glimpse into the collaborative efforts that resulted in...

Two of Redford's Biggest Box-Office Hits on TCM Tonight
Robert Redford movies: TCM shows 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,' 'The Sting' They don't make movie stars like they used to, back in the days of Louis B. Mayer, Jack Warner, and Harry Cohn. That's what nostalgists have been bitching about for the last four or five decades; never mind the fact that movie stars have remained as big as ever despite the demise of the old studio system and the spectacular rise of television more than sixty years ago. This month of January 2015, Turner Classic Movies will be honoring one such post-studio era superstar: Robert Redford. Beginning this Monday evening, January 6, TCM will be presenting 15 Robert Redford movies. Tonight's entries include Redford's two biggest blockbusters, both directed by George Roy Hill and co-starring Paul Newman: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which turned Redford, already in his early 30s, into a major film star to rival Rudolph Valentino,...

Extras Abused, Their Lives at Times Endangered; The Bride of Frankenstein Goes from Leading Lady to Extra
Hollywood Unknowns explains that there were several organizations ready to help out young women who came to Los Angeles to become movie extras. But what about the men? Didn't male extras also need assistance? Yes, the emphasis was on helping female extras. And this may have been influenced by the knowledge that some had young children. And yes, I am sure male extras were abused. Just consider how they were treated by Michael Curtiz during the making of Noah's Ark (1929). Stripped naked, their bodies painted with a vile-smelling brown liquid, and then sent on to a set where four million gallons of water were poured down on them without warning. Many male extras would live three to four to a room, even sharing their clothes. Incredibly, those who had loaned out their clothes would sit around all day waiting the return of their colleagues. In your view, was Central Casting truly helpful to the extras?...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Joseph Gordon-Levitt: Sh-tkicker
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
At the end of "The Dark Knight Rises," (spoiler alert ahead) Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character has been given the keys to Batman's armory, which, as a result, has spurned rumors of a possible spinoff movie -- rumors that Gordon-Levitt has done a good job dancing around.

But if the story did continue, what would his vigilante superhero be named? It might prove difficult to just assume Batman's identity. And using his character's real first name, Robin, doesn't seem reasonable. I asked Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who didn't have an answer ready. But, thankfully, David Koepp -- the man who wrote "Jurassic Park" and "Spider-Man" -- was in the room and did have an idea. Sadly, we will probably never see the words, "Joseph Gordon-Levitt is ... Shitkicker."

Gordon-Levitt and Koepp are promoting "Premium Rush," a film in which they, respectively, star and direct. In the film, Gordon-Levitt plays Wilee, a daredevil bike messenger...

The Forgotten: The Red Sea Reels
Above: If you ever wondered what a pharaoh's nursery would look like...

He was born Manó Kertész Kaminer in Hungary in 1886, began directing as Kertész Mihály, switched to Mihály Kertész in 1917, and was known in Hollywood as Michael Curtiz. The film that got him there, Moon of Israel (1924), sees him credited in English as Michael Courtice. But despite the dancing letters of his name, he was remarkably consistent in his approach.

Warner Brothers imported him from Austria, and Jack Warner would soon come to bemoan the prolific and successful emigré's tendencies to indulge in frequent tracking shots that seemed to have little to do with the plot, and to focus on set design and visuals over actors and story. Yet somehow, perhaps due to that elusive and phantasmal "genius of the system", Curtiz's approach meshed with the Warners house style to create movies where incessant gliding across glossy obsidians and...

Reviews Of Silent Era Gems From The Warner Archives: "The Merry Widow", "Don Juan" And "Noah's Ark"
By Doug Gerbino

Warner Archive has just released three classic silent (or part-silent) films. The Merry Widow (1925), Don Juan (1926) and Noah's Ark (1929). These three films are among the best-remembered hits of the late silent, early sound era. First, let's start with The Merry Widow (1925, MGM). This film stars Mae Murray and John Gilbert and was directed by Erich von Stroheim. Much has been documented about von Stroheim's excesses as a director. This was his first film after the infamous debacle known as Greed. Hollywood legend has it that while going through the daily rushes of this film with MGM chief Irving Thalberg, von Stroheim showed a single 10-minute take of one the character's shoe closet. When Thalberg questioned the 10 minute shot of shoes, von Stroheim said, "This is to establish that the character has a foot fetish." Thalberg supposedly replied, "And you have a footage fetish!" Loosely based on the...

Putting Summer 2007 On The Couch…
Hollywood has no institutional memory. One of the reasons that the vast majority of its execs aren’t in therapy, and should be, is because they don’t want to talk about the past even if it’s prologue. They’re purposefully amnesiac. Otherwise, they’d have to confront the lunatic decisions they make over and over again (since repeating the same behavior and expecting different results is one definition of insanity). Which is why I want to revisit Summer 2007 whose $4.18 billion worth of threequels and blockbusters smashed the May 1st through Labor Day domestic box office gross record. It’s not that Hollywood denizens started doing everything right. It’s more like they just started doing less things wrong. The product is still terrible. The process is still tainted.
