    A Goat Gland

They called silent pictures with talking sequences added on "Goat Glands".I think that this was a reference to the current obsession with the rejuvenating remedy for keeping young. The item in the Trivia section says that this was the first talkie made in the UK.This is not quite correct. The fact is that the cast and director went to New York to film the talking sequences, which comprise the final half hour,as sound equipment had not yet been installed at Elstree. It is generally acknowledged that "Blackmail" is the first "all talking" film made in the UK. It is curious that BIP went in for these strange hybrids for a short time.Other examples being The Informer and Flying Scotsman where the first half was silent with titles and then suddenly half way through the film bursts into sound. The film itself is typical silent melodrama. All about a well to do officer marrying a shopgirl and being separated by loss of memory, war wounds and a calculating mother. It is all fairly predictable. As the credits tell us it was"Personally directed by Victor Saville" soon to make his name on the Jessie Matthews musicals.
