With the elections less than two months away and the highly anticipated debate between former President Donald Trump and current vice president Kamala Harris on Sept 10, it’s time to revisit classic political movies. TCM is currently presenting a nine-week series “Making Change: The Most Significant Political Films of All Time.” Political films run the gamut from thrillers, to dramas (“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington”), to the historical, to satirical comedies.

Speaking of satires, Preston Sturges received his one and only Oscar for his screenplay for 1940’s “The Great McGinty,” his smart, funny comedy about a hobo (Brian Donlevy) who rises to governor only to lose it all. Sturges had originally written a piece “The Story of Man” in 1933 with Spencer Tracy in mind. Tracy had just starred in 1933’s “The Power and the Glory,” which marked Sturges’ first film script. He attempted to sell it to Universal which also turned the story down; so,...

The Academy Awards grew up at the 16th annual ceremony March 2, 1944. Since the first Oscar ceremony at the Hollywood Roosevelt’s Blossom Room in 1929, the Academy Awards were small banquet ceremonies for La La Land movers and shakers. But that all changed 80 years ago. World War II was in its third year and movies meant more than ever to war-weary audiences.

So, the Oscars moved to the then-Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood and bleachers were introduced giving fans a chance to see their favorites walk the red carpet. And instead of a select industry audience, attendees included members of all branches of the armed services many of whom sat in bleachers on the stage at the Chinese. The ceremony was heard locally on Kfwb; Jack Benny hosted the international broadcast for the troops on CBS Radio via shortwave. And for the first time, supporting performers finally received a full-size Academy Award.

Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray sizzled as the duplicitous lovers in Billy Wilder’s exceptional 1944 film noir “Double Indemnity.” But that classic based on James M. Cain’s novel wasn’t their first pairing. Four years earlier, they played very different lovers in “Remember the Night,” which was penned by the brilliant Preston Sturges and directed by Mitchell Leisen. The exquisite holiday film, ironically released in January of 1940, has become a Christmas favorite thanks to TCM, streaming services and DVDs.

MacMurray stars as Jack, a young New York City assistant district attorney. Stanwyck’s Lee has seen her share of bad breaks is on trial before Christmas for shoplifting a bracelet at a jewelry store. It's Pride Month! While it's ideally a month for political action, hearkening back to the Stonewall riots from whence it emerged, it's probably most commonly associated with parades, block parties, and movies (along with countless people reminding you that they're allies). LGBTQ+ cinema has existed for a century, and beginning in the late 2000s, has experienced somewhat of a golden age.

Recently, though, there has been a reactionary, theocratic attack against any LGBTQ+ progress made in recent decades. It's hard to say if queer cinema can have much of an impact against this pendulum-like pushback, but at the very least, it should provide solace to the many people who feel under attack by ideologues.

Fortunately, there are a handful of very exciting films throughout June and beyond which will celebrate LGBTQ+ icons, explore queer experiences, and tell deeply human stories. Read on to learn more about some of the exciting...

Just in time for Succession‘s end, let’s look at method acting. The Criterion Channel are highlighting the controversial practice in a 27-film series centered on Brando, Newman, Nicholson, and many other’s embodiment of “an intensely personal, internalized, and naturalistic approach to performance.” That series makes mention of Marilyn Monroe, who gets her own, 11-title highlight––the iconic commingling with deeper cuts.

Really, I mean Preston Sturges' Hotel Haywire, because nobody's too interested in George Archainbaud, a Paramount contract director who had been directing for 20 years without helming a really memorable film (Thirteen Women, an uncomfortably racist pre-Code with Myrna Loy, is as exciting as it gets, and even that one is remembered chiefly for featuring the girl who threw herself off the Hollywood sign), He would continue for another 20, moving from B-westerns into TV westerns, without making anything else of particular note.Sturges wrote the script as part of his plan to get a long-term contract at Paramount. To particularly appeal to the suits there, he filled the story with roles for Paramount stars such as Mary Boland, Charles Ruggles, Fred MacMurray and Burns & Allen, none of whom were necessarily famous enough to carry a movie, but whose combined star-power might make an attractive investment for studio or future ticket-buyers.

We all know that the issue of marriage equality is quite divisive, generating various sorts of responses and stances. London, Mar h 8: Anna Friel has revealed that she is thinking of having her eggs frozen - for when beau Rhys Ifans feels ready to face fatherhood.

The 36-year-old actress, who already has a seven-year-old daughter Gracie from her 10-year relationship with David Thewlis, has been dating Ifans for two years.

Friel told Easy Living magazine that although she wants to have another child, she doesn't want to rush into it at this point in her life with Rhys, the Sun reported.

Los Angeles, March 5: "Limitless" actress Anna Friel faced an embarassing moment when she accidentally ended up sending her father pornographic images while researching a role.

Friel is to play Jean Raymond, the wife of porn baron Paul Bradley, in new movie "The Look of Love". She made the error while trying to send her father images of Jean, reports dailystar.co.uk.

"I sent an email to my dad with some pictures of Jean Raymond. He called me afterwards and said, 'I think you're going a bit far on this one'," she told Easy Living magazine.

Washington, Mar 4: Anna Friel recently found herself in an embarrassing situation when she accidentally sent her father pornographic Images while researching for a role.

The British actress will be seen playing the role of Jean Raymond, the wife of a porn baron Paul Bradley in her new film 'The Look of Love' and she made the error while trying to send her father images of Jean, Contactmusic reported.

Freil told Britain's Easy Living magazine that she didn't realise that she sent her father an e-mail, which had the pictures from the actual porn shoot that Raymond had done, and she only got to know about it when her father told.

As much as we loved last year's animated hit, "Wreck-It Ralph," and the world Disney built for it, the movie leaves with you a longing to travel to the other games in the arcade. What else is out there?

To celebrate the home video of "Wreck-It Ralph," we get you give you a small answer to that question. Included on the deleted scenes from the film is an entirely new game world, "Extreme Easy Living 2," where a very different-looking Ralph travels to a social, "Sims"-like game in an earlier version of the movie during a low-point in his adventures.

The filmmakers eventually cut the game from the movie, but some previz work is included on the Blu-ray and DVD.

Actress Marcia Cross turned into a warrior when her husband was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 - because she wasn't about to lose another partner to the disease.

Cross' previous longterm partner Richard Jordan died of a brain tumour in 1993, and the Desperate Housewives star was determined to do all she could to make sure Tom Mahoney beat cancer.

She tells Easy Living magazine, "I didn't let myself think I might lose him. I went through this terrible loss of my first partner, and the second time, I just went straight into action. I was the uber-partner - maid, lover, I did the whole thing.

"I remember thinking, 'Who would have thought that experience the first time would pay off?' If you're going to have cancer, you want me around. I'm good."

But her devotion took its toll, and culminated in an emotional outburst after 12 tough months for the couple.

She adds, "The (emotional) block was so strong, I only started crying a year later... it all came out."

Mahoney has since been given the all-clear.

Desperate Housewives star Marcia Cross has weekly therapy sessions to cope with the strain of life in the spotlight.

The actress boasts a master's degree in psychology from Antioch University Los Angeles, but looks for outside guidance to help her through the stresses she faces in life.

She tells Easy Living, "Gosh, yes (I go to therapy). Being able to talk to somebody and hear yourself reflected back is really important.

"We're constantly growing. Life's a spiritual journey. If I have time on a Saturday morning, I try to squeeze (a session) in."

"I've been under so much pressure for so long, now I'm trying to find a little more ease in my life. I'm trying not to stress out about things, and just be in the moment."

Cross has endured a stressful few years - she was placed on precautionary bed rest in 2007 ahead of the birth of her twin daughters, and her husband Tom Mahoney was diagnosed with cancer in 2009. He's since been given the all-clear.

Editors at Forbes magazine recently reported the Desperate Housewives star is one of the highest-earning women on TV, bagging $10 million (£6.7 million) between May 2010 and May 2011.

Cross admits she's happy to hand cash to organisations close to her heart - but she finds it difficult to promote good causes by putting in appearances at charity events.

She tells Britain's Easy Living magazine, "I feel an obligation to give back... What's been hard for me as an actress is understanding that putting on a dress and make-up, which I don't like doing that much, and showing up actually supports charities...

"Before, I used to do much more volunteer work, which felt more meaningful."...

The first thing actress Marcia Cross will do when "Desperate Housewives" ends is ditch her diet. Speaking with Easy Living magazine, Cross said, "I've had to watch my weight for the show and am looking forward to not having to think about it anymore."

Cross, who plays Bree Van de Kamp, also revealed that she's open to getting cosmetic surgery. "We [on the set of 'Desperate Housewives'] say we'll do anything as long as it doesn't involve a knife," she explained. "I'd never say no to surgery in the future, because I feel like, as I get older, I'm going to face temptation more."
