Critics Reveal Their Favorite Holiday TV Traditions — IndieWire Survey
Bill Melendez and Peter Robbins in Joyeux Noël, Charlie Brown! (1965)
Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question: What are your winter holiday season viewing habits (that are not for work)? Do you have traditional go-to shows or movies? Are you looking forward to anything in particular?

Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR

As I have written in the past, I’m not the kind of critic who loves holiday specials. Too often, they’re too hokey, too commercial, too weird (yes, Bill Murray, I still don’t get “A Very Murray Christmas”) or, in the case of countless Hallmark Channel movies, way too white. But I do have a few holiday media traditions, starting with my Spotify Holiday Tunes playlist, which gets fired up as...

Good Bad Man Cortez: Final Interview Segment with Biographer of The Great Hollywood Heel
Ricardo Cortez
'The Magnificent Ambersons': Directed by Orson Welles, and starring Tim Holt (pictured), Dolores Costello (in the background), Joseph Cotten, Anne Baxter, and Agnes Moorehead, this Academy Award-nominated adaptation of Booth Tarkington's novel earned Ricardo Cortez's brother Stanley Cortez an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography, Black-and-White. He lost to Joseph Ruttenberg for William Wyler's blockbuster 'Mrs. Miniver.' Two years later, Cortez – along with Lee Garmes – would win Oscar statuettes for their evocative black-and-white work on John Cromwell's homefront drama 'Since You Went Away,' starring Ricardo Cortez's 'Torch Singer' leading lady, Claudette Colbert. In all, Stanley Cortez would receive cinematography credit in more than 80 films, ranging from B fare such as 'The Lady in the Morgue' and the 1940 'Margie' to Fritz Lang's 'Secret Beyond the Door,' Charles Laughton's 'The Night of the Hunter,' and Nunnally Johnson's 'The Three Faces...

Universal's 'Walking Dead' attraction: Lots of blood, but hoping for more
Boris Karloff and Marguerite Churchill in Le mort qui marche (1936)
About two months ago, I tried out to be a zombie for the upcoming Walking Dead attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood. As documented, it went horribly wrong. I overthought the entire process about being a member of the undead. That, combined with my lack of flexibility and rhythmic ineptitude, doomed my chances. I didn’t even make the first cut. I was Doa. Well, the Twd attraction is just days away from opening up — officially on July 4. When I got a press invite to tour it, I was more than curious to see what the final outcome was. For selfish reasons, I also wanted to know what those hired to zombie did right. So I went to the man in charge, John Murdy, the Creative Director of Universal Studios Hollywood. Wearing a baseball cap with an embroidered skull and crossbones and a shirt to match, Murdy explained exactly what he...

Ten truly memorable zombies
Are zombies really that memorable? When you think about it, today’s undead munchers are not exactly an interesting crowd since all they do between meals is wander around in a trance. The pre Romero vegetarians are even worse, as they spend most of their time under the thumb of a zombie master, although on the odd occasion they do rebel against their tyrannical leader.

Zombie movies are a dime a dozen these days, and apart from a few moderately successful variations, they haven’t progressed beyond the flesh-eating antics of Night of the Living Dead (1968). But on the odd occasion a couple of zombies stand out from the faceless crowd of walking corpses, and what some these ghouls lack in personality, they make up for in other ways.

So here’s a list of ten memorable zombies that stood out for me, as an avid horror movie fan.

The...

The Battle for ‘Lawrence of Arabia’: How T.E. Lawrence’s family and friends opposed bringing his story to the screen

T.E. Lawrence (1888-1935) ranks among the 20th Century’s oddest heroes. This short, smart, and mischievous British soldier helped organize the Arab Revolt against Turkey, a secondary front of the First World War. He became Emir Feisal’s trusted ally, painfully conscious that the Allies wouldn’t honor promises of independence. After the Paris Peace Conference, Lawrence retreated into the Royal Air Force and Tank Corps as a private soldier, T.E. Shaw… read the full article.

Your Chance to Get Spooked at Universal Studios Hollywood
Boris Karloff and Marguerite Churchill in Le mort qui marche (1936)
It's that time of year again -- pumpkin spice flavoring is making an appearance in almost every product imaginable, there's a crispness to the air, and Universal Studios Hollywood is ramping up its yearly scarefest, Halloween Horror Nights, as well as handing out Eyegore Awards for achievement in the horror genre.

Halloween Horror Nights has a “More Dead than Ever” theme this year and will feature mazes, scare zones and its signature Terror Tram, with themes from TV and the movies that include The Walking Dead, From Dusk Till Dawn, Avp: Alien vs. Predator and more.

This year's Eyegore Awards, emceed by McKenzie Westmore of Syfy's Face Off, will honor the talented creepmeisters behind The Walking Dead, as well as filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and John Landis, and guitarist Slash.

But the awards extravaganza isn't just for Hollywood insiders, for the first time ever, fans will be able to attend the festivities. The first 500 Halloween...

Year of the Living Dead (2013)
Interview With Larry Fessenden, Producer Of 'Birth Of The Living Dead'
Year of the Living Dead (2013)
Director, writer, producer, and actor Larry Fessenden has slogged his way to becoming a prominent force in the horror genre over the course of more than two decades. His first film to really start turning heads was the provocative thriller No Telling (1991). He secured his place on the horror film map by writing, directing, and starring in the gritty vampire nightmare Habit (1995), which was followed by Wendigo (2001) and The Last Winter (2006).

His acting roles have ranged from brief glimpses in films like Martin Scorsese's Bringing Out The Dead (1999), Brad Anderson's Session 9 (2001), Jim Jarmusch's Broken Flowers (2005), and Neil Jordan’s The Brave One (2007), to leading roles in Glenn McQuaid's I Sell The Dead (2008) and Chad Crawford Kinkle's Jug Face (2013). Fessenden can also be spotted in this year's You’re Next, directed by Adam Wingard, Hellbenders, directed by J.T. Petty, and We Are What We Are,...

‘World War Z’ — Hopes for the Film, Dissecting the Book
There is a lot to be looking forward to this summer season regardless of the sect of nerdom you affiliate yourself with — ‘Man of Steel’, ‘The Wolverine’, ‘Iron Man 3′, ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, ‘Kick-Ass 2′, ‘Pacific Rim’, and so on — but one film appeals to me on levels the others just don’t, and that’s ‘World War Z’.

I’ve been a zombie fan for as long as I can remember. I may have been watching ‘All Dogs Go To Heaven’ and ‘Fievel Goes West’ during the daytime hours as a child, but at night, I was moonlighting Tom Savini’s ‘Night of the Living Dead’ remake and Brian Yuzna’s ‘Return of the Living Dead III’.

We’ve entered a golden age of zombie media. It’s almost an oversaturation of the horde, from the small screen (‘Walking Dead’) to romantic comedies (‘Warm Bodies’). And now, in...

Face Off (2011)
Last week, Syfy kicked off the third season of its effects makeup competition show, Face Off, with a new batch of aspiring makeup artists, plenty of reality TV drama and a wowing Star Wars cantina-themed challenge.

Tonight’s episode, “Pirate Treasure,” sends the remaining contestants to San Diego, where they get their challenge assignments aboard the Hms Surprise, the ship used for filming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

Syfy Announces Judges and Contestants for Upcoming Season of Face Off
I’m not usually a fan of competition shows, but this one fascinates me. We’re given a terrific insight into the state of the art of special effects makeup, and the results are stunning. In the new season of Face Off we will lose judge Patrick Tatopolous after the premiere, as he goes off to work on the production design of 300: Battle of Artemisia.

His replacement, Neville Page, brings some exceptionally excellent credentials. Read about him, some of the very famous guest judges, some of the challenges, and all of the contestants, right here:

La Momie (1999)
'Mummy' Reboot Comes Alive For Universal
La Momie (1999)
The "Mummy" reboot you've been waiting for has finally arrived? Variety reports that Jon Spaihts will write the script for "The Mummy," which was last seen onscreen in 2008.

Spaihts also wrote "Prometheus" (though Damon Lindelof, credited as "Prometheus" co-writer, has been getting the lion's share of pre-release buzz), and he told Variety that the new version of "The Mummy" would be "dark" in nature. His only other screen credit is the 2011 bomb "The Darkest Hour," which came and went from theaters with little audience interest last December.

Like "The Amazing Spider-Man," "The Mummy" is another recently successful franchise rebooted for a new audience that might still enjoy the previous efforts. The film emerged as a popular franchise for Universal in 1999; starring Brendan Fraser, "The Mummy" earned $415 million worldwide. Two sequels followed -- "The Mummy Returns" ($430 million worldwide) and "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor ($410 million worldwide) -- plus a spin-off,...

Munsters Emerge From the Tomb; People Flee?
And now, an item from the "Bad Ideas" desk: Producer Bryan Fuller is planning to resurrect the classic '60s television series The Munsters and has signed a deal with NBC to deliver a pilot episode, with the logline "Modern Family meets True Blood." Oy! While I love what Fuller did with Dead Like Me, Pushing Daisies and even the short-lived Wonderfalls, I really don’t think the world needs another iteration of the Munster clan, especially one filtered through Fuller’s patented whimsy.

Actually, this has been tried once before to disastrous results. The Munsters Today ran from 1988 to 1991 for 72 episodes (which was two more than the original series), and I totally understand if you’ve erased it from your memory. Lord knows I’ve tried. A film version of the show — à la The Addams Family — had been planned by the Wayans brothers a few years ago, but that thankfully disappeared.

Movie Poster of the Week: "The Bride of Frankenstein"
A couple of weeks ago there was a lot of buzz about the fact that this rare teaser poster (the only one known to be in existence) for the 1935 The Bride of Frankenstein was poised to break the world record for the sale of a movie poster. The record, held since 2005, was for one of four known copies of a 1927 German poster for Metropolis, which sold at London’s Reel Poster Gallery for $690,000. Prior to that the record had been held for 8 years by a poster for the 1932 The Mummy sold in auction at Sotheby’s in New York for $453,500. (The third highest selling poster of all time, for the record, is also Metropolis). It was hoped that the Bride poster would fetch over $700,000 at Heritage Auctions in Beverly Hills (Heritage, based out of Dallas, handles 70 percent of the world's movie poster auction sales) but it failed to reach its...

The Walking Dead Spoilers: Season 2 Yellow-Lit?
You know how cable networks like Starz and HBO have gotten into the wonderful habit of ordering up two seasons of really good original series before even airing the pilot?  Well, last week we thought The Walking Dead would be the latest preemptive recipient of a second season order.  According to comicbookmovie.com, Dead producer Gale Ann Hurd confirmed a thirteen-episode season series order, set to begin production in February.

Unfortunately, AMC was quick to debunk what fans were hoping was the official word on more Walking Dead.  But I wouldn't lose hope for a season two annoucement, altogether.  Networks have a particular way of handing such things.  Hurd and Darabont may have jumped the gun on AMC's official press release, which might be forthcoming.  Just a thought.  While we wait it out, here's the latest developments from the frontlines of the war on the "Walkers."

Sometimes it pays to sit through commerial breaks.

Official Trailer for 'The Walking Dead'
A few weeks ago we gave you an early look at the trailer for The Walking Dead that had come out of Comic Con. Well, the real deal has finally come about, and you can check out the much clearer non-cam version of the same trailer below!

The Walking Dead is set to premiere on October 31st with a full 90 minute episode. I don't know if I want to admit that I'm lame enough to stay at home on Halloween so that I can watch a new show about zombies, but frankly I think I might be lame enough to stay at home on Halloween so that I can watch a show about zombies!

Ok ok, officially this is not a film, and doesn't belong on Motion Captured, however we've decided to make an exception because the trailer that AMC released today for "The Walking Dead" is just so darn great we wanted you to see it if you haven't already. AMC's 'Walking Dead' to premiere Halloween Night | Ology
Excellent. Word on the street is AMC's newest zombie-tacular drama The Walking Dead will premiere with a 90-minute episode on Halloween Night - Sunday, October 31, 10pm Et/Pt and 9pm C. If I wasn't going to be out and about, desperately trying to recreate the glory that was last year's Halloween (hotel parties, tranny bands, bum wine, special candy), I would surely be watching this live at home, holding my mom's hand. Alas, DVR will have to suffice.

Watch the trailer, previously released at Comic-Con, below. Sh*t, I really gotta get going on my Han Solo costume. This year's the year.

Now a month removed from San Diego Comic-Con, many of the trailers and clips that debuted have officially hit the web, except one. Since then, fans have been chomping at the bit for a good look at one of the most anticipated television series (and horror projects in general) in years. Today, Fangoria is proud to be one of the first to debut what will be, for many fans, your first glimpse of The Walking Dead.

Image Comics Releases Cryptic Teaser for The Walking Dead #80
Yesterday, Image Comics sent over the teaser image pictured above for The Walking Dead #80. Nothing was included with the photo, so it appears we will have to wait until closer to the issue's release date to find out about the plot.

Feel free to leave any guesses regarding #80 in the comments. Given that the story is called "No Way Out," I'm hoping the story arc involves a few of the zombies forming a Phil Collins cover band. Sounds plausible, right?

The Real Walking Dead Debut Date is...
Some time ago, there was a rumor circulating that The Walking Dead was going to air on October 8. Not the case. AMC has been adamant about debuting and promoting the hell out of their new zombie series during their Halloween programming. So, what's the real date? October 31. Halloween night, of course! How awesome is that? AMC's premiere will run 90 minutes. Even better, a full trailer - what was shown and bootlegged from Comic-Con - is now online in crisp quality. You can watch it right here ...or watch it below.

TV: Spielberg Producing Team Bringing Joe Hill's 'Locke & Key' to TV!
One of the best graphic novels I've been reading is Joe Hill's (son of Stephen King) Locke & Key, which was originally announced as a film project over at Dimension. Vulture is reporting that Steven Spielberg, via DreamWorks TV, is teaming with mega-hyphenates Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Transformers, "Fringe") and writer/exec producer Josh Friedman ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles") to turn Joe Hill's comic series into a major TV franchise!! If AMC wasn't already filming "The Walking Dead", this would be the best news of the year. First released in 2008, "Locke & Key" revolves around three kids who end up watching over a secret, spooky New England mansion filled with mystical doors that transport them to different worlds and give them special powers (like turning into a ghost). Friedman will write the pilot.

The Daily Bugle: A Cosmic Connection of The Marvel Film Universe
Editor’s Note: Welcome to the Marvel Films based column here on FusedFilm, The Daily Bugle. Like our DC column version in the Daily Planet, we are named after the famed newspaper in the Marvel universe comics. We hope to use this name until we told there is some copyright or trademark infringement at which point we will change. In the meantime enjoy the musings on all things related to past, present and future Marvel Films right here in The Daily Bugle column.

While I didn’t get a chance to go to San Diego Comic-Con 2010, I paid as much attention to it as possible. Especially the Marvel panel on Saturday. I knew Marvel’s presence there this year was probably going to be the most talked and blogged about when Sdcc was over and done with; turns out I was correct. Other panels were pretty big too – DC dropped...

More Zombies From AMC’s Walking Dead
It's almost like a new era for the horror genre, where zombies and vampires rule TV sets instead of movie screens. Starting this October The Walking Dead joins Dexter, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural in a growing list of horror programing. I say the more the merrier. It gives me more stuff to watch on Hulu and Netflix. Below are the newest set of images from The Walking Dead. Rick Grimes finds trouble in Atlanta.

Boris Karloff and Marguerite Churchill in Le mort qui marche (1936)
'Walking Dead' artist 'amazed by series'
Boris Karloff and Marguerite Churchill in Le mort qui marche (1936)
The Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard has admitted that he is surprised how faithful the upcoming AMC television adaptation is to the original comic series. He told the AMC blog that the design for the show's zombie make-up was based on his original artwork. "What amazed me was that they used the drawings in the book as influences at all," he admitted. "I was thinking [they were] not going to really use much of my designs... but when I got on set everyone was saying how much they were looking at the drawings in the book and going for this specific look." Adlard also dismissed suggestions (more)...

Swag Report: 'Doctor Who' Merch And A Zombie Master
It's been a long time since I've posted an official Swag Report, and the arrival of a bunch of cool, unexpected packages at Splash Page HQ recently had me feeling the urge to give this awesome swag — and the people who sent it — a shout-out on the site.

Good stuff definitely came in threes for this edition of the Swag Report, with a great "Doctor Who" poster, an interactive "Doctor Who" toy that will probably be the death of me, and a piece of certified zombie history.

Want to see the goods?

First up is an Eleventh Doctor Sonic Screwdriver sent my way from Entertainment Earth. It's a great little "Doctor Who" toy that lights up, extends for extra screwdriverin' and makes a variety of awesome sonic screwdrivery sounds that have caused no small amount of annoyance to my fellow MTVers. (Case in point: This pic of Multiplayer editor Russ Frushtick killing my joy.

TV News: AMC Greenlights New Drama Formerly Known As The Killing
AMC announced today a full series order for the pilot that was formerly known as The Killing, from writer and executive producer Veena Cabreros Sud. Sud has signed on to also serve as the showrunner for the series, which is currently untitled.

Set in Seattle, the series is based on the wildly-successful Danish television series Forbrydelsen, and tells the story of the murder of a young girl and the subsequent police investigation.

Production on the series begins this fall in Vancouver and season one consists of 13, one-hour episodes. The series is slated to premiere in 2011 on AMC. Today’s announcement marks the fifth original series greenlight for AMC. The first four were Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Rubicon and The Walking Dead.

As “Sarah,” Mireille Enos portrays the lead homicide detective that investigates the death of Rosie Larsen. Other previously announced castings include: Bill Campbell as Darren Richmond, Seattle’s City Council President,...

Two More Zombie TV Shows in Development
(More) Zombies on TV!

The Walking Dead has yet to premiere on AMC and is already helping launch two more TV shows about the undead.  The poorly spelled SyFy Channel was first to announce a new zombie sitcom called "Zeroes" which follows members of the Zombie Extermination and Removal Operation. Here's some infor from SyFy's press release:

In this 1/2-hour single-camera satire, when the zombie population of Marshall City overcomes the 30-foot barrier separating the infected people from the rest of the city, the Zombie Extermination and Removal Operations company (the Zeros) are called in to keep the peace. When they can get out of their own way long enough to focus on a case, they are pretty effective with very unorthodox methods.

Sounds like one outrageous premise that brings the promise of hilarious zombie-killing hi-jinks!

Next is another zombie comedy, this time going all the way to a big network.

Spider-man Says Everybody Gets One | Matthew Vaughn Calls It Curtains For the Caped Crusaders
In a recent interview, Matthew Vaughn bemoans the oversaturation of superhero films, claiming that it it's due to come to an end in the next few years because they're just going to the inkwell a little too frequently:

"[Superhero movies have] been mined to death and in some cases the quality control is not what it's supposed to be. People are just going to get bored of it. I've always wanted to do a big-budget superhero film and I think we've kind of crossed the Rubicon with superhero films. I think [the opportunity to do one], it's only going to be there two or three more times. Then, the genre is going to be dead for a while because the audience has just been pummeled too much. It is a crowded room. It's too crowded."

Vaughn's in a prime position to make such a bold statement, considering he's made exactly one fucking comic book film, Kick-Ass, where he...

Now I Am Become Death, The Destroyer Of Worlds | Boom! Irredeemable/Incorruptible : Comic-Con 2010/Brian Prisco
Because of the slavering hordes of gollumesque fanboys and their incontrovertible mythology, I usually shy away from the classic caped crusaders. But I was turned on to this newest comic strain from Mark Waid and Boom! Studios. As a fan of Fables, Y: The Last Man, Preacher, The Walking Dead, etc, etc, I can honestly say these two parallel series are my favorite.

Irredeemable introduces to The Plutonian, a Superman type crusader who gets pissed that society has essentially got unappreciative. And so he kills them all. It's a phenomenal series, twisted in the best possible way. As a companion, Waid also wrote Incorruptible, about Max Damage, the world's greatest villain, who upon witnessing The Plutonian's mad fall becomes a hero. Eschewing any possible kind of emo self-exploration -- he still keeps an eye on his sixteen-year-old former paramour Jailbait -- Max Damage tries to save the world only he's not very good at it.

Brad Pitt Makes His Way Into 'World War Z'
Popular actor Brad Pitt goes from battling Nazis to the undead as he takes on the lead role in the big screen adaptation of "World War Z". Max Brooks, the author of the post-apocalyptic tale, confirmed that the actor would be joining on the feature film version of the tale. Then again, how is it much of a surprise to begin with. Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment has been attached to the production the whole time, since they are the ones who hold the rights for the feature.Along with that, "Quantum of Solace" director Marc Forster is still currently attached to direct. Brooks must be having a wonderful day, because not only does he have an A-list actor on "World War Z" but his two other properties have been optioned as well. "The Zombie Survival Guide" and the graphic novel "The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks" could be...

World War Z To Star Brad Pitt | The Newest Soldier In The Zombie Apocalypse
Max Brooks' World War Z (reviewed by Prisco here) is one of my favorite books in recent memory. It probably comes as no surprise that I enjoyed a book about the zombie apocalypse, but World War Z, like the Walking Dead graphic novels, is a different take on the genre -- a totally humorless, grim, gritty, brutal telling of what the world would really be like. Told without a trace of irony without any winks or nods, it's at times absolutely devastating. It's uneven in parts, but still, I found it fascinating. Much like The Walking Dead, when news broke that it was being adapted into a film, I was nervous as hell.

The novel was picked up by Plan B Productions, which is owned by Brad Pitt, and has been in production for a while. Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace) has been announced as the director, and now we've got a star.

San Diego Comic-Con 2010: Preview Night Photos
San Diego Comic-Con International 2010 kicked off last night with the annual Preview Night, an opportunity to walk the convention floor before the true madness begins. Which is funny in a way because the floor was already teeming with people who were either after the latest freebies or checking out the behemoth booths and merchandise offered by a slew of studios, television networks, comic sellers, and, well, anything and everything under the sun. Missed Preview Night? Here's a selection below of photography capturing some of the highlights of the convention floor--from Green Lantern and Tron: Legacy to The Walking Dead--courtesy of Mark Difruscio.
