    Wheres Jack?

Usually when dance bands and their leaders starred in films the film was tailored around them. For example Music hath Charns(Henry Hall)Everythings Music(Harry Roy)She Shall Have Music(Jack Hylton). On the title card of this film Jack Paymes name was above the title, yet he did not appear till the third reel.He and his band only had 3 spots in the whole film.Basically this film was a filmed variety show with some decent and some poor acts. The second reel was entirely devoted to Troise and His Mandoliers. Now i enjoy their music but it was poorly presented. The studio seemed the size of a broom cupboard.there were about 4 pairs of dancers on a very small dance floor, often obscuring our view of the Band.In the middle we were introduced to a pair of acrobats who were rather poor. There was also a turn with 6 pianos. Now given that this was supposed to be on radio they are hardly likely to sound like 6 pianos and there was little of visual quality throughout. Most looked as if a camera had been set down in the middle of the stalls. The 2 Leslies did an engaging number. The attempts at comedy were all rather lame.there was a perfunctory plot. Then after a rousing number from Jack Payne we got a bout of opera i just wonder what the cinema patrons thought of this when they saw this.Altogether rather a disappointment.A typical quota quickie revue with too much pain and not enough Payne!
