The play of the same title upon which this film is based, opened on Broadway at the Booth Theatre, 222 W. 45th St., on April 23, 1935 and ran for 82 performances, plus another 20 at a different theater. A revival in 1940 ran for 107 performances.
According to a contemporary article in the New York Times, MGM paid $35,000 ($757,000 in 2022) for the film rights to the play.
Typed inventory of paintings shows: Hoppner's Portrait of Mary Ann, Rembrandt's Warrior Putting on His Armor, Frans Hans A Young Cavalier, Self Portrait by Fragonard, Gainesborough's Miss Sarah Buxton, Raeburn's Portrait of John Lamont, Whistler In The Studio and El Greco -The Holy Family.
Retitled 'House of Menace' in order to avoid confusion with the remake Femme en péril (1951), this film was initially telecast in Philadelphia PA Wednesday 12 March 1958 on WFIL (Channel 6), followed by New York City NY 22 April 1958 on WCBS (Channel 2) and by Los Angeles CA 8 May 1958 on KTTV (Channel 11); in San Francisco CA, television viewers finally got a look at it 22 March 1960 on KGO (Channel 7). It has now had its original title restored and is in the TCM film library.
