Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer and his brother Harold had been in the Our Gang cafe, which was open to the public. They were performing and entertaining the crowd. One of the spectators was assistant director Gordon Douglas (I). He liked what he saw, and immediately wrote the brothers into this film.
The name Daisy Dimple was meant to be a parody of Shirley Temple.
The cartoon figure appearing on the front of the stage prop is not a dog as most people think. The body of a lion combined with the head of a human female makes the complete image a sphinx. The reason her head is positioned back with her eyes looking straight up combined with her mouth wide open adds to the complete humiliation of Spanky's Mother.
Filmed at around the same time at the Roach Studio as their major motion picture "The March of the Wooden Soldiers" aka "Babes in Toyland". At Least eight actors were in both films. Gus Meins directed, Art Lloyd was one of the cinematographers and the actors Ernie Alexander, Scotty Beckett, Marianne Edwards, Charlie Hall, Fred Holmes, Jack "Tiny" Lipton, Jerry Tucker, and Mae Wallace. It was filmed between February 20th and 28th 1935.
"Beginner's Luck" received the highest critical acclaim and was the biggest money maker of all the Our Gang's shorts.
