After months of advertising and marketing — Seriously, have you seen an NFL game the past two weeks? Or driven by a bus stop in the greater Los Angeles area? Or a billboard? Or your aunt’s Facebook feed? — Disney+ launches today. It is doing so with the full weight of Disney’s brands, including some of its most beloved stories.
They represent Disney’s commitment to making its new streaming platform the “permanent home” for all of its iconic films and TV shows, going all the way back to the “Steamboat Willie” days. (And if you’re opting for the ad-supported Hulu/ESPN+ option — it takes you to a cool $12.99.)

Last Monday was incredible. It was Most Memorable Year night and we got to hear everyone’s incredible stories. That was far beyond anything I could have imagined and I was a hot mess by the time we got to our dance.
We started our dance with me in my old wheelchair and that was really emotional. It was really emotional to sit back in a wheelchair. As soon as I walked out into the ballroom and I saw my chair I absolutely lost it. But Val was there to keep me calm and focused and looking at the bigger picture,...

Back when she was still Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen enjoyed playtime with classic toys of the era — including a Mickey and Minnie set that predates the iconic characters’ film debut.
Now five of Elizabeth’s dolls, as well as 20 of her childhood outfits, are set to be sold at auction by the British auction house Burstow & Hewett. The collection includes several outfits the Queen wore as a child, as well as three girl dolls and the Mickey and Minnie set are included in the sale. Disney has been with us through thick and thin, from the Mickey Mouse whistling Steamboat Willie days to the 3D computer-animated films like Moana that makes us want to step through the screen and swim in the Pacific ocean amongst demigods. Now that Disney has announced it plans not to renew its distribution agreement with Netflix after 2019, its beloved movies will soon no longer be available to stream during your binge-watching nights (although Marvel and Lucasfilm hits may still survive the cut). Here are 12 nostalgic and new Disney movies you should watch before the entertainment mogul pulls...

A look at Disney’s live-action remakes to assess whether the music of the originals is still necessary.
As Disney celebrates opening their live-action take of Beauty and the Beast to the tune of $170m domestically, they are also preparing another re-imagining. It should come as no surprise that many of their properities are making the transition to live-action and Mulan is looking like the next movie to get a fresh treatment. The only problem is that Disney is considering releasing the movie without music.
“Yes, from what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.” Director of Mulan, Niki Caro.

The Happiest Place on Earth has never been the cheapest. A single adult ticket to Disneyland will currently set you back between $95 and $119 depending on what day of the year you want to go (for those of you interested in such things, prices have more than doubled since 2000). That’s a lot of money to almost puke on the tea cups. But the price of an evening at the newly opened Disneyland restaurant, 21 Royal, might be enough to make you a little sick without spinning in circles.

And our dear Mickey turns 18. All these years, we have grown up with Mickey so much so that he has become a household name for us. Be it any age, Mickey Mouse, our favorite Disney character, holds the interest of both, the young and the old. Walt Disney’s character Mickey Mouse, made his debut on November 18, 1928 with ‘Steamboat Willie’, the first fully synchronized sound cartoon. And, that marks his birth anniversary. Mickey Mouse has paved his way not only in the world of cartoons but in our hearts as well. Mickey toys, T-shirts, paintings, Mickey themed birthday parties and the list goes endless with kids. How can we forget Mickey’s gang? Goofy, Donald, Pluto and cute Minnie mouse. All of them have entertained us so much and made it worth remembering our childhood. As our B-town stars don’t leave a single moment of celebration to go by like that,...

Blame it on Al Jolson. Ever since that infernal crooner delivered the line “You ain’t heard nothin’ yet!” in 1927’s The Jazz Singer, audiences have demanded to hear actors speak in movies. The very next year, Mickey Mouse spoke in Steamboat Willie, and the era of the talkie had truly arrived. Displaced silent actress Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) would bemoan the situation in 1950’s Sunset Boulevard: “They had to have the ears of the whole world, too. So they opened their big mouths and out came talk, talk, talk!” The only silent films that have been made in recent decades have been deliberate throwbacks, like Michel Hazanavicius’ Oscar-winning The Artist. But maybe the silent movie, or at least the dialogue-free movie, has not yet breathed its last. On September 7, The Hollywood Reporter accidentally uploaded a wordless version of the trailer for the upcoming sequel Bridget Jones ...

Disney and Warner Bros are currently embroiled in a major feud regarding the super hero movies they produce, based on characters from the rival comic book companies they own; Marvel and DC. However, the competition between the two studios goes back to the 1930s; which was long before the WB ever purchased DC and before Marvel Comics even existed. Cinelinx looks at the first rivalry between these two big movie studios, which pre-dates super heroes. It involved a mouse and a rabbit.
The Walt Disney Company made its mark in 1928 when it introduced the iconic character who would become its symbol/mascot. Micky Mouse debuted in the short film Steamboat Willie in 1928. Disney's D23 live action panel is in full effect this afternoon, as the studio teases their new Marvel and Star Wars movies to a packed house. They also have the live action The Jungle Book arriving next year, and brought out the cast and it's director Jon Favreau. They not only debuted the first footage from this adaptation of the iconic Richard Kipling novel, which we hope to have for you here shortly. They also released the first poster, which was handed out to audience members leaving the auditorium. We have the poster for you to check out here.
Jon Favreau revealed that this was his first ever D23, and that he was born the year Disney released the original animated The Jungle Book in 1967. He's recently been hanging out with Richard Sherman, who wrote all the music for the original Disney classic. He then went on to praise Disney...

When Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX hit the PS3 last year, it was satisfying for fans of the series to finally get the high-definition remaster of the PS2 title that started it all, as well as the card-battling spinoff, Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Unfortunately, though, it didn’t provide as full a package as it could have, as Kingdom Hearts II was notably absent.
That has now been remedied with Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX, which not only includes the previously-absent sequel, but also the formerly PSP-exclusive prequel, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, and remastered cutscenes from the DS spinoff, Kingdom Hearts Re:coded. Not only is this the first high-definition release all three have seen, but besides features like trophies and full widescreen support, this collection marks the North American debut of the Final Mix versions of both Kingdom Hearts II and Birth by Sleep, which contain various refinements and additions.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX is less than a week away from its December 2nd North American release date, and Square Enix has released two new promotional trailers to drum up further hype. Compared to previous trailers, this pair focuses more on the familiar faces that players will encounter within the three games that make up the compilation of re-released Kingdom Hearts games.
Disney fans will recognize literally dozens of different characters, from the likes of Mickey Mouse circa his Steamboat Willie years, Jack Sparrow, Captain Hook, Mushu, Hercules, and many more. One of the trailers also focuses on the other, less prominent crossover that the Kingdom Hearts series has provided over the years, that being the appearances of many iconic characters from Square Enix’s own Final Fantasy games. From Cloud and Tifa to Squall, the Gullwings and Auron, fans of the long-running Jrpg series will get an added dose of fanservice through their cameos.

I'm surprised that we haven't seen a really good biopic based on the life of Walt Disney. The closest thing we've gotten is his portrayal by Tom Hanks in the movie Saving Mr. Banks. There is an independent film coming though called Walt Before Mickey, which chronicles the early days of Walt's animation career. The film was directed by Juilliard graduate Khoa Le, and it's based on a 2011 book by Timothy Susanin called Walt before Mickey: Disney’s Early Years, 1919-1928. The feature stars Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie) as Walt, Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) as his brother Roy, David Henrie plays an animator, and Jodie Sweetin (Full House) as Charlotte Disney.
This may seem like the kind of made for TV movie biopic that you'd see on Lifetime, but it's what we've got for now. I'm sure someday fans of Walt will get the amazing biopic we've all be waiting for.

While fans got a glimpse of 1960s Walt Disney in last year's Saving Mr. Banks, the upcoming Walt Before Mickey gives fans a whole new perspective on the animation legend. The first trailer has been released, starring Thomas Ian Nicholas as a young Walt Disney, who was struggling to survive for 10 years, before the creation of Mickey Mouse. Deadline also reports that the filmmakers are closing in on a distribution deal, with a fall release being planned.
Based on Timothy Susanin's book Walt before Mickey: Disney's Early Years, 1919-1928, this adaptation shows how Walt Disney honed his early animation style while working for a number of different companies before creating Walt Disney Studios and the character that would define his legacy, Mickey Mouse. Users were asked to nominate films from a given year and up-vote their favorite nominees. The full list includes the outright winner along with the first two runners-up from each year. The list is mostly a predictable assortment of IMDb favorites and certified classics, but a few surprise gems have also risen to the top of the crust, including the early experimental documentary Man With a Movie Camera in 1929, Abel Gance’s J’Accuse! in 1919, the Fred Astaire film Top Hat over Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps in 1935, and Stanley Kubrick’s The Killing over John Ford’s...

Flight is cool. It’s always been cool. Its sheer physical absurdity and majesty has inspired countless works of art. Look no further than the trio of Oscar-winning cartoons I featured back in April, all of them about birds. Animation is particularly adept at capturing the breathless drama of a creature shooting through the open air. That’s certainly part of why we are now facing a second DisneyToon Studios movie about sentient aircraft. Thanks to the impressive box office success of last year’s Planes, in the face of absolutely dismal reviews, this weekend brings us Planes: Fire and Rescue. The cast list includes not one, but three talking forklifts. That may very well be all that anyone needs to know about the film, and you will be forgiven if you don’t rush out to see it. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t seize another opportunity to celebrate the long love affair that...

Why Watch? In this dreamy animated short film from Derek Fong, an old woman begins to see shadowed figures in her living room, which would be enough to concern anyone, but then a whale floats up to her windowsill. Naturally, she hops on for a ride back into her own memories. As you can see from the image above, the style is rudimentary — a nod back to Steamboat Willie that Fong uses deftly to build visually layers to coincide with the story itself. Fishing at Lethe is about finding clarity and bringing the past into focus, so our simply outlined main character gets dropped into each space almost as a cutout. A figure that doesn’t quite belong in the environment. The comic strip style also evokes an endearing fantasy element even with a difficult subject matter lurking beneath. The only misstep is a repeated piano tune that breezes in and too obviously highlights certain moments. Without...

Pixar must have known what it was doing when it scheduled Toy Story 3 for Fathers’ Day weekend 2010, over a decade after the release of Toy Story 2. For as much as kids were eager to catch up with Woody and Buzz, it was the fathers who inevitably stayed in their seats during the film’s closing credits, trying to compose themselves before their children noticed dad’s cheeks were wet. Adult conversations about the film that summer often began with, “Sooo… Did you cry?” or rather, “How hard did you cry?”

Here's a fun piece of art that mashes Mickey Mouse's Steamboat Willie with the popular video game Bioshock. The illustration comes from Liz is the Biz, and this is what she had to say about it,
This piece was done for one of my classes where we had to mash-up two different styles. I chose to mash-up Bioshock and Steamboat Willie. I did a lot of research into different postures that characters had, along with researching what characters could be combined. Super fun project and I’m very proud of the finished product.

We've got a few photos from a new movie that focuses on Walt Disney called Walt Before Mickey. This is the first time I've heard of the film, but it's in the middle of production, and it stars Thomas Ian Nicholas (American Pie) as Walt, Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) as his brother Roy, Disney alum David Henrie as an animator, and Jodie Sweetin (Full House) as Charlotte Disney.
This is an independent film being directed by Ari Taub, and it's based on a book by Timothy S. Susaninthat. The movie is set from 1919-1928, so it chronicles the life of Walt up to the point when Mickey Mouse was introduced to the world. The photos come from the film's Facebook page via: /Film.
Here's a full description of the book that the film is based on:

Last week I wrote a long and rant-y column about the Disney Myth, as constructed in Saving Mr. Banks and deconstructed in Escape From Tomorrow. ‘Nymphomaniac’ ‘sexually explicit’ red band trailer shown at ‘Frozen’ screening in Florida? Horror Non-News Story of the Year (image: Shia Labeouf in ‘Nymphomaniac’ poster) A "sexually explicit" scene was accidentally shown to adults and children attending a screening of Disney’s Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee-directed box office hit Frozen, which features the voices of Kristen Bell and Josh Gad. Well, at least that’s reportedly what happened at Regal Cinemas Park Place Stadium 16 in Pinellas Park, Florida. Now, first of all, bear in mind that "sexually explicit" movie content frequently refers to movie sex that’s anything but explicit. It’s just (sexually repressed?) people with lots of (kinky?) imagination, seeing body parts that aren’t quite there. (See also: “‘Nymphomaniac’ Shia Labeouf sex scene photo teaser.”) Anyhow, due to "technical difficulties," before Frozen was to have provided some Family Friendly Fun, the theater decided to show a Mickey Mouse cartoon,...

Over Thanksgiving weekend, a Regal Cinemas theater in Florida showed a sexually explicit movie clip prior to a screening of the animated movie Frozen. "I was appalled," moviegoer Lynne Greene told Tampa Bay television affiliate Fox 13. Greene had brought her grandchildren to see the PG-rated Disney holiday title at Regal Cinemas Park Place Stadium 16 in Pinellas Park on Nov. 29. After technical difficulties delayed the start of the movie, "they put in the filler, it looked like Steamboat Willie, the old Mickey Mouse cartoon, and then all of a sudden it goes into this other [sexually explicit]

The audience of a screening of Disney.s Frozen in Florida was exposed to explicit sexual content that was played before the film got started. As you can imagine, parents (and grandparents) of small children who were in attendance when this happened were not pleased. Was it an accident or a deliberate prank? That seems unclear at the moment. The video below comes from Fox.s Tampa Bay news affiliate and shows the reactions of some theater goers who were treated to what sounds like some kind of sexually explicit movie scene. The news report says a moviegoer explained that there were technical difficulties that delayed the start time, so the theater played another cartoon: "They put in the filler, it looked like 'Steamboat Willie,' the old Mickey Mouse cartoon, and then all of a sudden it goes into this other scene," Lynn Greene said. From Lynn.s description,...

Walt Disney Animation Studios has become, in its relative old age, both charmingly and cripplingly self-conscious. Each new entry seems to quiver in the shadow of the greats, the vaunted classics that have become untouchable for many. The studio just celebrated the 85th anniversary of Steamboat Willie, the short whose iconic image—Mickey whistling a happy tune while commandeering a rickety skiff—appears in its logo; however, Disney animation continues to remain at a creative crossroads. Once Pixar honcho John Lasseter was brought aboard as Disney’s chief creative consultant in the mid-2000s, he declared that hand-drawn animation was no longer dead and forgotten by the company that proved the form’s importance for so many decades. So, in 2009, Disney dipped into the well of fairy tales and princesses once more after what felt like an eternity,...

Tim here. Today, the short film Steamboat Willie celebrates the 85th anniversary of its theatrical debut. And that makes today, according to Disney, the 85th birthday of Mickey Mouse, cinema icon and greatest company mascot in the history of mascots. This despite Steamboat Willie being only the third Mickey short completed (it was, however, the first one commercially distributed). But if the giant media conglomerate wants to semi-arbitrarily choose by diktat which day we are to gather in celebration of their most famous son, who I am to disagree?
Anyway, It’s an ideal excuse to revisit Steamboat Willie, one of the best of all early sound cartoons. Of which it was not the first, no matter what you might have heard; it’s certainly the most technologically sophisticated, though, and the one that introduces the idea that animals and inanimate objects make melodically squeaky noises when you poke at them.

Sneak Peek a new set image of Oscar-winning actor Tom Hanks as 'Walt Disney', creator of Mickey Mouse and the Disney entertainment empire, on the set of director John Lee Hancock's "Saving Mr. Banks".
The new film follows the relationship between Disney and writer P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson), author of children's novel "Mary Poppins".
The book was adapted into a major motion picture in 1964, starring Julie Andrews ("The Sound Of Music") and Dick Van Dyke ("The Dick Van Dyke Show").
In other Disney news, take a look at a hand-drawn cell image and a poster for "Get A Horse", the new Disney 'retro' animated short, recreating the look of the original 'Mickey Mouse' as envisioned by cartoonists Disney and Ub Iwerks, using a combination of hand drawn animation and digital effects to simulate film wear.

Disney has announced its plans for the upcoming D23 Expo, which will take place August 9 through the 11 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA. The event will highlight both Marvel Comics and Star Wars, with a big attraction being concept art of the original trilogy’s iconic villain, Darth Vader.
Well-known properties in their own right, both Marvel Comics and Star Wars are owned by The Walt Disney Company, bought, respectively, in 2009 and 2012. Coincidentally, Marvel was the first comic publishing company to issue Star Wars comics, which ran from 1977 to 1986 and spanned 107 issues (with 3 annual specials).
The press release, originally posted on D23.com, reads as follows.
Disney Consumer Products (Dcp) will give Disney’s most loyal fans an up close look at an extensive collection of interactive experiences and merchandise that celebrate Disney, Marvel and Star Wars timeless characters during the bi-annual D23 Expo, the ultimate Disney fan event.

Not long after San Diego Comic-Con ends, Disney will be holding their annual D23 fan expo. Disney is expected to announce their plans for some theme park developments as well as what they are looking to do for future films and TV series. This year they'll be adding Star Wars to their repertoire. I've gone to D23 the last couple of years, and I've always had a pretty fun time.
Disney revealed some of their plans today in the following press release. The event is held at the Anaheim Convention Center from August 9th to the 11th. As the event gets closer they will reveal what panels will be held.

Come in to check out their press release about it.
Disney has been hosting their own event in the form of the D23 Expo for a few years now, and in the past it's given fans info on Tron and even The Avengers. This year, we can look forward to a heavy Star Wars presence. The event is just a few weeks away (August 9th-11th), and the House of Mouse has announced that Star Wars will be having a big presence there.

Mickey Mouse has been an icon since his inception in the Steamboat Willie cartoon back in 1928. In recent years, Mickey has been delegated to the 3D animated world in his Disney Channel series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. But, Mickey will be returned to his 2D roots in a new series of shorts set to air on Disney Channel beginning on June 28, 2013. While this first of 19 shorts, titled "Croissant de Triomphe", follows the Oscar winning 2D short Paperman, Disney has no plans in the near...
