The following contains spoilers for Invincible Season 3, now streaming on Prime Video.
One thing that stands out about Invincible Season 3 is how troublesome the landscape has been for Steven Yeun's Mark Grayson. He had to deal with gang warfare between Titan, Machine Head and Mr. Liu's Order. He then had to contend with a villain who didn't really have his druthers: Aaron Paul's Powerplex.
Powerplex is really a scientist known as Scott Duvall, but his background is tragic and laced with pain. This allowed Invincible to do its own take on a dark arc from Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, improving on the Dceu narrative by adding a lot more emotion and unpredictability.

Science fiction has long provided audiences with a means of escapism into new worlds and civilizations and epic struggles that exist between the forces of good and evil. Among the directors who have been instrumental in the modern age of cinema in bringing new worlds to life has been director Denis Villeneuve. Villeneuve, director of Blade Runner 2049 and the newest adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune, has been critical of the Star Wars franchise. In particular, the direction and tone the films took following the release of Return of the Jedi in 1983, citing that the franchise became geared toward children.
I find that there is some validity to Villeneuve’s comments about the franchise. After all, the intense battle on Hoth between rebel forces and Imperial walkers in The Empire Strikes Back and the Ewoks bringing down a legion of what Emperor Palpatine refers to as “his best troops...

Science fiction movies built the foundation of the feature film medium at the turn of the century, with Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon being one of the first movies that could be considered to be a blockbuster. The best science fiction films have always been the ones that were capable of merging the pure entertainment of seeing fantastical universes and space-faring adventures with themes that reveal something about the human condition.
As one of the most important and influential film critics of all time, Roger Ebert championed science fiction filmmaking that pushed the boundaries of what was previously thought to be possible in the medium, bringing new thrills and ideas to the big screen. According to him, the best science fiction movies tell stories that are both larger-than-life and relatable to a wide audience of viewers.

Plus, there's plenty else happening to keep fans of the Max show entertained.
From an unexpected reunion with Ivy's former lover Jason Woodrue to King Shark's children (especially Shaun) causing mayhem of their own, there hasn't been a shortage of problems to keep one of Gotham's favorite couples busy. The science fiction genre will always be relevant, representing dreamers, creatives, and visionaries in many ways. Usually focused on a distant future or an alternative reality, sci-fi lets us dream up the wildest dreams; it's been true since The Twilight Zone, and definitely since Edward Wood's bizarre movies, 1927's Metropolis, and even Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon from 1902. From the earliest shorts until today's miniseries and long-running TV shows, science fiction lives and makes up a large part of our lives.

The late Gene Hackman was a rare actor who could play just about anything, and his legendary career included stellar performances in every conceivable genre. Comic book fans will always love him for Lex Luthor -- however, the openly comic nemesis in the original Superman: The Movie proves far scarier than he first seems. Hackman's performance represented many people's first exposure to the character, which he returned to twice more during Christopher Reeve's up-and-down run as The Man of Steel. The original is still one of the greatest comic book movies made, and the first to properly bring superheroes to big-screen blockbusters.
He wasn't the last, of course. Numerous actors have gone on to memorably play Lex, including Michael Rosenbaum, Jon Cryer, and Clancy Brown, with Nicholas Hoult waiting in the wings for 2025's Superman. All of them owe at least some of their efforts to Hackman, and in the case of Cryer,...

One of the interesting and relatively unknown characters set to make his big screen debut in James Gunn's Superman is "Mister Terrific." He first graced DC's pages in 1997's Spectre #54 (written by John Ostrander and illustrated by Tom Mandrake). On-screen, he will be played by Edi Gathegi and is supposed to be "the main character of those [other] characters [in the movie]."
Previously, he appeared live on the CW's Arrow (Echo Kellum) and had a few stints in animated projects, one was voiced by the Cosby-outing comedian Hannibal Burress.
For Black History Month, it's important to celebrate Bipoc heroes and villains because the writers and artists didn't hold back when it came to creating diversity among the legion of characters. They have been given amazing powers--some cosmic, others mutant, and a few elite humans. Mister Terrific is the third smartest character in all DC lore, next to Lex Luthor and the Atom, Ray Palmer.

The sixth episode of Harley Quinn season 5 was a lot of fun. Lois Lane punched Harley in the face, Clayface and Bane wrote a musical (that was totally a shot at Joker: Folie a Deux), and then the musical was performed and it was hilarious. And shockingly, the audience loved it.
But things didn’t stay cheerful on the DC TV series. As Brainiac watched the play, he saw Frank the Plant mocking Koko and saying his alien monkey companion was dead. As he begins laughing, he finally realizes Koko is really dead. This puts him in a fouler mood than normal.

Smallville is set in the small Kansas town where Clark Kent grew up before he moved to Metropolis to be a superhero. Throughout the show's ten seasons, the characters frequently go back and forth from Smallville to the big city. They use a variety of transportation methods, with Clark superspeeding, Lex and Lionel taking a helicopter, and everyone else usually driving.
The distance and travel time between Smallville and Metropolis don't always seem consistent, leaving fans wondering how far apart the cities actually are. A little over a decade since Man of Steel hit cinemas, Zack Snyder continues to cop criticism for his handing of the DC Extended Universe (Dceu). Many thought he mishandled it due to how bleak and violent the films were, and the prevalence of mass destruction. Many critics rightfully thought the Dceu movies lacked warmth and heart, ultimately failing to rake in the billions that Marvel Studios did by doing the opposite.
Another issue was how much Snyder tried to pack in his films -- a point of contention many found with his 300 and Watchmen adaptations, too. Ironically, despite these issues, the Dceu didn't age as terribly. It's not that the overarching idea was awful. But the execution left a lot to be desired.
A little over a decade since Man of Steel hit cinemas, Zack Snyder continues to cop criticism for his handing of the DC Extended Universe (Dceu). Invincible. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. My Adventures with Superman. X-Men ‘97. Harley Quinn. Creature Commandos. What If…? We may be in a new golden age of animated superhero shows. With Marvel Animation set to expand its offerings with Marvel Zombies and Eyes of Wakanda, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is dipping into the medium for the first time. Meanwhile, under the guidance of James Gunn, DC kicked off a new film universe using animation with the release of Creature Commandos. It looks like superhero cartoons are back in a big way, and with their re-emergence has come variety, especially in terms of style.
Look at a still frame from any of the shows listed above, and you’ll instantly recognize that they belong in different universes. From character design to background layouts, it doesn’t take much to figure out what show you’re watching based solely on the animation. Put everything in motion,...

For anyone who gave up on Harley Quinn, this writer feels bad for you. The previous episode was the best of the season and the momentum will likely continue for the rest of the fifth season.
The fourth episode of season 5 showed the origin of Vril Dox a.k.a. Brainiac and it was explained like only this show could. It was told like it was a 1990s sitcom. All that was missing was the studio audience laugh track. The only difference was the jokes were told from the perspective of someone with a higher level of intellect. That means the jokes were a bit high-brow but still funny. As funny as that was, the stuff that furthered the episode was even better.
First, we find out that Lena Luthor is working for Vril. So far, all we know is that they have a deal. Lena gets whatever she wants...

Similar to the shows Dt performed on the previous UK/European leg of the 40th anniversary tour, the setlist of 18 songs spanned the band’s career, mixing classics and fan favorites, such as “Pull Me Under,” with a couple new songs from the recently released Parasomnia.
Among the highlights was the live debut of “Midnight Messiah” — featuring Portnoy’s first lyrical contributions since his original stint in the band — and the first performance of “The Dark Eternal Night” since 2017. Fritz Lang's 1927 sci-fi epic "Metropolis" regularly appears on lists of the best movies of all time, and is certainly one of the most important works of science fiction ever produced. "Metropolis" takes place in an industrialized future where the world's wealthy live in meticulously constructed towers, and commute via fantastical blimps and flying machines. They engage in frivolous romantic misunderstandings, and enjoy lazing about in gardens eating rich foods. Meanwhile, under the city, impoverished laborers are literally working themselves to death to keep the machines running.
One of the city's most prominent rich brats is Freder (Gustav Fröhlich) who, by happenstance, witnesses a peaceful labor protest. He becomes instantly enamored of Maria (Brigitte Helm), the pacifist ruler of the movement, and becomes curious as to what the lives of laborers are actually like. He moves underground and sees the sweat, oil, and terror first had. The machines, he feels,...

While July is likely to be a great month for theaters, three huge movies will be competing with each other for people's attention.
Universal Pictures' Jurassic World Rebirth kick things off on July 2 but won't have long before Warner Bros. and DC Studios' Superman swoops into the frame. That will either be trampled on by the latest Jurassic movie - the last three movies grossed a combined total of roughly $4 billion - or cut those dinosaurs down like a rampaging kaiju in Metropolis.
However, just as Superman gets going (and it's vital for the Dcu's future that it succeeds), Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps touches down on July 25. The competition will be intense and it's simply too soon to say which movie will come out on top.

A diverse and uniquely appealing medium with countless devoted fans, anime has long since established its niche in mainstream pop culture. What has been considered an obscure and commonly misunderstood hobby in the past has now evolved into a booming worldwide cultural phenomenon acclaimed by general audiences and critics alike.
However, even if anime is more internationally accepted now than ever, plenty of people - even those deeply engrossed in other visual storytelling mediums, like film and TV - are still prejudiced against it, not recognizing anime as worthwhile. Be it due to the intrinsic mischaracterization of animation as “childish,” the lingering negative stereotypes, or the simple lack of exposure; many refuse to give anime a fair chance. Thankfully, these incredible anime films could help even the most skeptical movie buffs change their outlook on the medium.

The science fiction genre in cinema is roughly one hundred and twenty-five years old, with Georges Méliès' A Trip to the Moon frequently cited as the film industry's first major work within the genre. While the silent era produced many influential science fiction movies, such as Metropolis, The Lost World, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, for most of the twentieth century, science fiction movies were predominantly B movies.
That all changed in 1977 when Star Wars lit the box office on fire. Ever since, science fiction has remained arguably the most profitable genre at the box office. Currently, 14 of the 25 highest-grossing movies of all time are science fiction movies. However, despite the immense popularity of the science fiction genre, many iconic sci-fi films continue to fly under the radar and have been forgotten by modern audiences. Plot: Long after humanity’s extinction, a buoy (Kristen Stewart) and a satellite (Steven Yeun) inherit the Earth, and with only the internet as their guide, learn what it means to be alive and in love. In this groundbreaking first feature from Sam and Andy Zuchero, Love Me explores AI and identity through live-action, animatronics, and classic animation in an epic tale of connection and transformation.
Review: If you have seen the trailer for Love Me, the feature debut from writer/directors Sam and Andy Zuchero, you may have gotten some Wall-e vibes. The film chronicles the love story between the artificial intelligence programmed into a buoy floating in the ocean and a satellite orbiting Earth. Set billions of years after the end of life on our planet, Love Me presents a touching romance between two inanimate objects as they develop emotions and invest in one another as the last two forms of life.

The second episode of Harley Quinn season 5 showed us how Pamela Isley became Poison Ivy. Like most villain origins, it started with tragedy and the betrayal of a loved one. In Ivy’s case, it was by her professor and lover, Jason Woodrue. This comes into play after Lena Luthor, Lex’s sister, tells Ivy that they’ll work together.
Lena may not have known about their past, but she could learn during episode 3. Ivy made Woodrue breathe the same fumes that almost killed her. Instead of dying, Woodrue has become the Floronic Man. It'll be hard to hide when you look like a dime-store version of Swamp Thing.
Yes, becoming the Floronic Man is an obvious way to get caught for attempted murder. However, there are a couple of things to take into account. First, and most important, Jason Woodrue will want the credit for what’s happened to...

The recently released trailer for James Gunn’s Superman (2025) has ignited a whirlwind of discussion among fans and industry insiders alike. Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for 'Harley Quinn' Season 5.Harley Quinn Season 5 may be off to a hilarious start in Metropolis, but this week's episode, "Back to School," proves a new city doesn't automatically put an end to old pains. After previously exploring Ivy's (Lake Bell) backstory in Arkham Asylum with Harley (Kaley Cuoco), the latest installment in the hit DC series revisits the incident that created the eco-friendly supervillain when Ivy visits Lena Luthor's (Aisha Taylor) Green Initiative. Taken by surprise when she's introduced to her partner in the project, Dr. Jason Woodrue (John Slattery), a series of flashbacks subsequently explores the pair's history, and the episode gradually unveils a backstory for Ivy that is even more heartbreaking than it previously seemed.

Modern audiences typically suffer from an affliction known as black-and-white movie phobia. While there still exists plenty of cinephiles who enjoy black-and-white cinema, the vast majority of mainstream audiences have minimal interest in older black-and-white films. Teaching film at the collegiate level has provided ample evidence related to people's perceived indifference toward black-and-white cinema. However, once exposed to black-and-white movies, many realize these older films constitute some of the greatest works in the history of cinema.
Many of the best science fiction films ever made are older movies that were shot in black-and-white. DC Comics has announced a new Superman series, Superman Unlimited, which will broaden the Man of Steel's universe, taking him out of Metropolis and tell stories across the DC Universe. Further, this series is just the start of what DC calls "the Summer of Superman," which includes the release of James Gunn's upcoming Dcu film.
Superman Unlimited will be written by Dan Slott, best known for his work with Marvel's Spider-Man, and superstar artist Rafael Albuquerque. The story, which will kick off with DC's Free Comic Book Day issue at the start of May, starts with an asteroid bringing an unprecedented amount of green kryptonite to Earth.

A number of characters from Suicide Squad and the greater DC Universe have made their way into Harley Quinn, with one in particular being effectively adapted in the show's latest episode. The season 5 premiere of Harley Quinn spent a little bit of time reflecting on the past, but most of this chapter of the show seemed to focus on the future, with a new setting in Metropolis and establishing a new villain in Brainiac. Brainiac wasn't the only DC villain to get a new iteration in the series, however.
The popular Max series has done such a great job with adaptation, to the point where even the funniest Harley Quinn characters have some interesting depth. Characters like King Shark and Clayface have been adapted with a cleverness that never gets in the way of genuine emotion. Iconic comic book writer Dan Slott has written titles for some of the most recognizable characters. Among them are She-Hulk (no one's written more comics about her than Slott), the Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man. The latter could be his most controversial. While this writer enjoyed everything from Amazing Spider-Man to everything he did with Otto Octavius in Superior Spider-Man, it was certainly divisive for others. Regardless of how you feel about that one, the series moved a lot of units whenever they were published.

From Metropolis to Avengers: Age of Ultron, robots are such a staple of movie-going that it's easy to forget they haven't always been around. The idea of automated machines doing work for us has existed for as long as civilization, but it wasn't until 1920 that Czech playwright Karel Čapek coined the word "robot" to describe a humanoid machine in a play called R.U.R.
Robots have been part of science fiction since even before the word was coined, but as powerful as literary explorations of the technology can be, there's nothing like seeing it on-screen. Maybe it's because, through the power of visual effects and production design, movies can give even the most futuristic robot an existence viewers can actually see. Or maybe it's that watching real people react to robots allows audiences to explore the relationship between humanity and technology by watching actual human bodies and faces.

Harley Quinn has established a distinctive position beyond normal genre restrictions in an era where superhero content seems to dominate every streaming platform. The show’s transition from DC Universe to Max reflects the evolution of its main character, surviving changes in the industry while maintaining its unique identity. After four seasons of changing Gotham’s crime scene, season 5 moves to Metropolis. This change is not just about location but also about personal and social transformation.
James Gunn and Peter Safran are changing DC’s media landscape, so this transition is particularly important. While other DC shows are getting canceled or restarted, Harley Quinn remains popular with today’s viewers. The show has changed from a straightforward comedy about villains to a more complex look at identity, relationships, and the difficulties of individual reformation in the face of systemic pushback.

While other DC shows are getting canceled or restarted, Harley Quinn remains popular with today’s viewers. The show has changed from a straightforward comedy about villains to a more complex look at identity, relationships, and the difficulties of individual reformation in the face of systemic pushback.

James Gunn's latest DC Universe comments have seemingly pointed towards the franchise's first Batman and Superman movie being the polar opposite of the Dceu's. As Chapter One of the DC Universe gets underway, teases about the future of the brand's biggest characters are already being found. Of course, July 2025 will see the release of James Gunn's Superman movie, with Easter eggs from Creature Commandos and a whole teaser trailer hinting at the future of Metropolis in the fledgling franchise.

Max’s Harley Quinn was met with skepticism upon its initial release not too long ago, but it’s proven to be one of the most consistent DC Comics adaptations of the last decade. Harley herself is an appealing character who fits into practically any setting imaginable as the ultimate wild card. She’s such a malleable figure that she even led her own isekai anime. Harley’s ability to infinitely reinvent herself is deeply freeing, but it’s also a “superpower” that’s prone to shallow storytelling. It’s difficult to connect with Harley if she’s always rebooting herself in a new direction. With that in mind, Harley Quinn was smart to make Harley and Poison Ivy’s relationship the series’ emotional center.
There have also been broader questions about the nature of villainy and how labels can both help and hinder individuals within the animated adult comedy.
