Excellent version of Les Miserables

I saw this in April 2017 at a packed cinema at the Barbican - a 397 minute feast with live piano playing by Neil Brand. There were two 15 minute breaks and an hour for dinner and the majority of the audience stayed the journey. The version shown has been restored recently and is in pristine condition - the use of tinting (as well as toning and mordanting, apparently) was exceptional.

As for the film as a piece of cinema - brilliant. The time flew and the story is given time to unfold I have not read Les Miserables so it was all new to me and the dramatic nature of the story comes to life brilliantly.

Great acting and understated direction on photography add to it.

I hope, if this gets a DVD or Blu-Ray release that Brand is allowed to score the picture. Although he improvised throughout the film, he captured the moods on screen well.

If you can see this, invest the time and do so.

A Silent Triumph of Struggle and Redemption

The 1925 adaptation of Les Misérables may not have the grandeur of later versions, but it stands as a remarkable testament to the enduring power of Victor Hugo's timeless tale. In this silent film, we are immersed in a world of poverty, injustice, and the relentless pursuit of redemption - all conveyed through the masterful use of expressions and gestures in place of dialogue.

The performances are superb for the era, with the actors capturing the depth of their characters' internal battles. The iconic struggles of Jean Valjean, Javert, and Fantine are brought to life with a raw emotional honesty that transcends the limitations of silent cinema. While it's easy to get lost in the magnificence of Hugo's novel, this film provides a grounded, humanized take on the saga.

The black-and-white visuals add a haunting beauty, enhancing the somber themes that unfold on screen. The lack of sound makes the emotions all the more palpable, each frame weighed with tension and grace.

This 1925 version of Os Miseráveis may be lesser-known, but it's a powerful reminder of how silent films can convey universal human experiences with clarity and depth. A quiet masterpiece of early cinema.
