Strike on Iran which killed dozens of military officials named after Game of Thrones
Game of Thrones (2011)
Last month, on June 13, the state of Israel launched a strike against Iran, striking around 100 targets including missile factories and nuclear facilities. That set off an exchange of firepower between the two nations that has thankfully, at least as of this writing, stopped.

According to The New York Post, the June 13 strike killed around 30 top Iranian military officials, including the three most senior generals. That may be why the operation, according to The Times of Israel, was code-named "Red Wedding."

On the TV show Game of Thrones, the Red Wedding is the name given to an event that goes down at the Twins, a castle in the Riverlands. Robb Stark and his army arrive at the castle hoping to cement a military alliance with Lord Walder Frey by marrying Robb's uncle Edmure to one of Lord Walder's daughters. Things seem to be going well...until Lord Walder, offended that Robb...

Randall Emmett & WGA Settle Unpaid ‘Pump’ Writers Dispute; Producer Coming Off Strike List
Image
Exclusive: After five years in the Writers Guild of America’s really bad books, The Irishman producer Randall Emmett has settled his debt with the Guild over not paying four scribes for work on a TV series.

Under an agreement with the Guild worked out over the past few weeks, Emmett wired $630,000 to the WGA West this morning. The Guild confirmed to Deadline that the funds have been received, but had no further comment.

Emmett will be coming off the Guild’s Strike/Unfair List, I hear.

The producer has been on the WGA Strike/Unfair List since 2020 after two of his companies — Emmett Furla Oasis Films, LLC and Pumped, LLC — failed to pay an arbitration award of $477,000 to four writers for work they did on the never made TV series Pump. The show was supposed to star Arnold Schwarzenegger but he exited the project, bringing it to a premature close.

New British Mystery Starring 'Andor's Denise Gough Secures an Impressive 93% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Andor's second season has everyone talking, with many citing it as one of the best Star Wars shows of all time, and the two-and-a-half-year wait now seems worth every second. One of the show's best aspects is its killer cast, with the franchise known for not always nailing their ensembles, and Andor a perfect example of this process completed with aplomb. With that in mind, many might be inspired to look to their favorite Andor stars and take a peek into the rest of their catalog. One such star is Denise Gough, known for her no-nonsense portrayal of Imperial supervisor, Dedra Meero. Why Jack Wagner Didn’t Want To Star On Melrose Place After General Hospital
Image
Jack Wagner joined General Hospital as Frisco Jones. When he left, he thought his soap opera past was behind him. He had no interest in joining Melrose Place. At first, he nearly skipped the audition.

Soap Opera Strike

Wagner reflected on his acting career during his interview on the Still The Place podcast. He spoke to hosts Courtney Thorne-Smith, Daphne Zuniga, and Laura Leighton about his audition for Melrose Place. Wagner almost didn’t star on the sexy primetime drama. He didn’t want to do another soap like Gh.

It wasn’t the genre that he was against. Wagner feared that he would get typecast. When his agent suggested the role as Dr. Peter Burns, he tossed the thought aside. Wagner was asked to audition for the show. His initial reaction was, “No chance. I’m not doing it. It feels like a soap.”

Then, there was one thing that changed his mind.

‘Andor’ Architect Tony Gilroy Talks Series Budget, Teaming With Brothers & How He “Divorced” Himself From Show During WGA Strike
Image
Spoiler Alert: The following interview contains details about Andor Season 2 episodes 1-3.

Deadline: What a great way to begin a Star Wars series, with Cassian wrangling that tie-fighter. For anyone who has played a Star Wars video game, that’s bliss. Was that a love letter to the fans?

Tony Gilroy: It was a really, cool fun idea. It does a bunch of things for me. It provides Cassian’s contact with the young woman at the beginning. It shows what Cassian has been doing for the last year, what he’s been doing for Luthen. It reenforces the very thing he told Luthen in their first meeting: You walk in like you belong. He’s the stud that should be doing this. Then he doesn’t know how to fly it. It’s a testing. But the whole scene is a bit of an answer to anyone who...

‘Blade Runner 2099’: A Baroque Blend of Cultures and Time, Closer to the Original Aesthetic Says Tom Burke
Image
Tom Burke, known for his work in “Furiosa” and the BBC series “Strike,” is gearing up for a major role in the upcoming “Blade Runner 2099” series on Prime Video. This series will pick up after the events of the iconic Blade Runner films, continuing the exploration of what it means to be human in a world full of advanced technology and artificial beings.

While details about the plot remain under wraps, Burke teased some exciting aspects of the series. He revealed that Blade Runner 2099 will have a visual style much closer to the original Blade Runner film, directed by Ridley Scott, than its sequel, Blade Runner 2049. Burke describes the aesthetic as a “Baroque, eclectic mix of cultures and time periods,” which fans of the original movie will likely recognize.

This return to the classic style means the series will feature the same dark, futuristic world where questions about humanity,...

Adrien Brody Appeared in a Massive Flop Before His Second Oscar Win
Image
One of the most talented names in Hollywood, Adrien Brody most recently made headlines for his win at the Oscars. Brody nabbed the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in The Brutalist, making the award his second Oscar win. Competing for the award were Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice), all of whom Brody successfully beat out.

Although now hailed as one of the best actors in film, a lesser popularized fact about Adrien Brody is that he has starred in some major box office flops over the years. One which takes the cake is Brody's 2018 film Air Strike. Given that he made a brief appearance alongside Bruce Willis and teamed up with Mel Gibson (a producer on the film) for the project, it was likely that Brody did not dream of the work going up in flames.

Martin Scorsese Dropped Out of This 30-Year-Old Gangster Movie to Make Casino (& It Was a Massive Box Office Flop)
Image
The crime drama genre is a cluttered space. While its halls are heavily populated, not every resident is necessarily “good.” There are plenty of cinematic and critical flops. Not everything can be a Blood Simple.

Among these lesser-known flops is Spike Lee’s 1995 Clockers. In some ways, the film’s catchy but unimpressive title betrays its contents. Originally set to be directed by Martin Scorsese, the film ultimately landed in Lee’s lap. Its $25 million budget became a roughly $12 million deficit. Perhaps more damningly, almost a third of its income was earned during its opening week.

Spike Lee’s Clockers Is a Forgotten Piece of 1990s Cinema Jack Nicholson was considered for the starring role. Samuel Jackson was one of the candidates for the role of Rodney Little. Spike Lee notes that Scorsese never showed up on set despite being the film’s executive producer.

'Daredevil: Born Again': Charlie Cox Doubted Marvel's Original Series Plan
Image
Daredevil: Born Again was going to be a much different beast before the writers' strike changed everything. No one in the industry wants to go back to that uncertain time, but in the case of the upcoming Disney+ series, it ended up being a blessing in disguise because it allowed the creatives to see that the new Daredevil series was going completely in the wrong direction. As it turns out, star Charlie Cox, despite being enthusiastic about returning as the titular character, wasn't completely on board with the previous direction of the series either.

During a chat with GQ, Cox opened up about the original plans for the series, which didn't have many direct ties to the previous Netflix show beyond the inclusion of Cox and his co-star, Vincent D'Onofrio. Even though both performers were happy to be back playing characters they loved, Cox admits they both had to keep...

15 Best British Crime Dramas, Ranked
Image
There's something about a British crime drama that can be so much more satisfying than its American counterpart. Perhaps it's the performances, often executed by trained thespians. Maybe it's their preference for season-long arcs, which offer variety and closure of American network procedurals while allowing room for larger-scale storytelling. I could be that everything just sounds cooler, smarter, and more intense in a British accent.

While we may have yet to solve this case, we have put together a suspect list of the 15 best British crime dramas ever made, and we've also ranked them based on overall quality. Hopefully for our readers in America or otherwise outside the United Kingdom, we can help you find your next binge-worthy mystery.

Abbott Elementary is returning for a new school year at ABC! (Season 5 renewal news)
Image
All of my fellow Abbott fans, gather around! We have some amazing news about the future of our favorite comedy on ABC. When we go into each season of a series, it's always bittersweet because we're happy to get more. But then, we start to wonder whether the show will get renewed. Broadcast networks can be harsh with their decisions sometimes. Well, thankfully there's a great update when it comes to the sitcom.

Abbott Elementary season 5 is happening, as ABC has renewed the comedy for a fifth season! This honestly isn't very surprising as the series is one of the network's most popular shows. The numbers show it all, including the highly-anticipated Abbott Elementary and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossover episode (season 4 episode 9) that aired on Jan. 8, 2025. The special brought in great numbers, 8.05 million to be exact, per Deadline.

This is the first series ABC renews for the 2025-2026 television season.

What Core Stats Are In Hyper Light Breaker (& What They Do)
Image
Each character in Hyper Light Breaker has different stat values, making them more uniquely suited to different builds and playstyles, but what does each stat mean? Some, like Armor, are obvious; the more armor a character has, the greater intrinsic damage resistance they have. Others, like Ops, are significantly confusing, and there are currently no explanations given in-game as to what they do.

To see a character's stats in Breaker, hit "Esc" in the Outpost to open up the loadout menu. Here, players can see all the gear they have equipped and change their loadout, including their SyCom, which is where their stats are located. Rather than a player's stats being tied to the character they're playing, the base stats are tied to each character's SyCom, which also includes a unique passive ability.

What Are Core Stats? The Base Of Any Build, Making Characters Unique

As mentioned, there are nine...

An online game turns lethal in 'C.B. Strike: The Ink Black Heart'
Image
A toxic fandom and a mysterious death pull Strike and Robin into their most dangerous investigation yet.

I’ve read every one of Robert Galbraith’s (the pen name of J.K. Rowling) Cormoran Strike novels. My two favorite books in the series are the first, “The Cuckoo's Calling” and the most recent, “The Running Grave” – which is some of Rowling’s best writing ever. I was obviously thrilled when the BBC decided to adapt the books into a TV series – a format far preferable to a film because of how much more detail you can go into in a limited series. So, with the upcoming Max premiere of Season 6 of “C.B. Strike,” covering the novel called “The Ink Black Heart,” dropping on Thursday, Jan. 23, let’s get you caught up with everything you need to know.

Death Of A Unicorn: Cast, Story & Everything We Know About The Jenna Ortega & Paul Rudd A24 Movie
Image
Death of a Unicorn is an upcoming A24 horror comedy and there have been some exciting updates about the film. Joining the increasingly unmatchable stable of A24 horror movies like Hereditary, The Witch, and Pearl, while also dabbling in A24 style comedy like Zola, Everything Everywhere All at Once, and The Disaster Artist, Death of a Unicorn looks to bridge two genres the studio excels at. Unrelated to Peter Dickinson's 1984 novel of the same name, Death of a Unicorn is shaping up to be a hit for horror and comedy fans.

Since 2023, news has been slowly rolling out about the movie with the unusual and exciting name. So far, it looks like A24 may have once again produced something wildly unique and enjoyable with some of the biggest stars working. Despite the interest in the film, and A24's trailer, which suggests the movie is far along in post-production,...

Every Season of The Shield, Ranked
Image
The Shield was one of the first crime dramas to encapsulate a different style of procedural television. The Shield followed Vic Mackey and his Strike Team. However, Detective Vic Mackey was a corrupt police officer, who led a corrupt team posing as a team that cracks down on gang violence. Corruption didn't just run rampant in the Strike Team of the Farmington precinct; politicians would also sink to the levels of the same criminals that they were fighting against. As morality stretches thinner, the actions of the Strike Team slowly seem to catch up to them.

The Shield ran for six years and seven seasons, racking up numerous accolades along the way. It won 15 awards and received over 60 nominations during its run. Every season was critically acclaimed, showing off new talent as well as bringing in familiar faces to take over some of the seasons. Each season has its merits,...

International Insider: To Potter Land; Box Office Projections; Canal+ Floats
Image
Good afternoon Insiders, Max Goldbart here with your very final international newsletter of what has been an at times tumultuous but never dull 2024. We hope you have a mighty fine Christmas and a Happy New Year and all that’s left is to thank you, dear reader, for coming back every week. It is hugely appreciated. Do read on.

Casting A Spell

The sorting hat: We end the year in Potter Land, exploring a show that could well be the highest profile project to be entering production in 2025. Intrigue is growing, mainly around cast. Our deep dive revealed that the search for the next Harry, Hermione and Ron has been whittled down a fair bit from a whopping 32,000, with Lucy Bevan and the casting execs leading the heavily guarded process thought to have started chemistry reads. I chatted with agents and located the original movies’ casting director to dive deep...

J.K. Rowling’s Agent Adds To Chorus Of Support For ‘Harry Potter’ Author: “We Believe In Freedom Of Speech”
Image
Exclusive: J.K. Rowling’s longtime agent Neil Blair has backed his client amid renewed focus on the author’s transgender views as buzz builds for the HBO Harry Potter series.

In a statement shared with Deadline, The Blair Partnership founding partner said he was proud to represent Rowling, adding that his agency stands by freedom of expression.

The intervention came in response to a Deadline story, which explores how Rowling’s hardening rhetoric on transgender rights comes into conflict with diversity, equity, and inclusion policies at Warner Bros. Discovery and the BBC.

Rowling, who penned the Strike novels adapted by the BBC, has gone from saying she stands by transgender people’s right to live authentically and comfortably, to refusing to use preferred pronouns and describing some trans women as “crossdressers.”

Blair said: “I have had the pleasure of working with Jo Rowling for over 25 years. Throughout that time, I...

Pilot TV Podcast #317: Strike & Based On A True Story ft. Tim Cook & Rebecca Ferguson, Holliday Grainger
Image
This week's Pilot TV Podcast sees our very own James Dyer leaving the podbooth and heading underground as he visits the set of Apple TV+'s newly confirmed Silo Seasons 3 and 4. On his travels, James sits down for a chinwag with both Rebecca Ferguson and the big Apple himself, Tim Cook [27:24 36:35 approx]. Never one to miss a chance to wax lyrical about Foundation, James cornered the Apple CEO to discuss the streamer’s penchant for brilliant nerdy sci-fi. Then, James heads out of the dystopian future and into the crime-ridden present as he speaks to The Ink Black Heart star Holliday Grainger about her return in the latest instalment of BBC's Strike saga [1:01:51 — 1:20:03 approx].

Elsewhere, in a genuine stroke of coincidence rather than nefarious corporate synergy/shilling, this week's listener question has the team — James, Kay Ribeiro, and Boyd Hilton — discussing which streaming service has had the best 2024. Over on the news front,...
