Despite being filmed in Florence, where many of the locations that are part of the Romola story still stand, the filmmakers chose to recreate most of them in a nearby studio. The Piazza della Signoria and an exterior of the Palazzo Vecchio were constructed for the film. The production took great advantage of Italy's well-known filmmaking infrastructure and cheep labor.
