The film was originally released as two parts in Sweden: "Gösta Berlings saga I" on 10 March 1924 and "Gösta Berlings saga II" seven days later. The two-part version was also used in Finland and Norway, but for the rest of the world a shorter, one-part export version was made.
As of 2010, about 450 meters of film from the original cut are still missing.
The film has attracted a big audience. This sumptuous production of Selma Lagerlöf's novel launched a new Swedish screen star, Mauritz Stiller's 18-year-old protégé, Greta Garbo.
For the scene were the wolves chases the carriage trained police dogs were used as stand-ins for the wolves. Their tails had to be fitted with lead weights as the dogs were constantly wagging their tails as they were extremely happy while the scene was filmed and looked anything but vicious predators.
