      "Tess of the D'Urbervilles" had been Minnie Maddern Fiske's greatest stage hit and had made her, according to some, "America's greatest actress" and the answer to France's Sarah Bernhardt. The movie was also a big success but at nickelodeon prices it failed to return even Mrs. Fiske's $10,000 advance.
