The Yellow Dog

This lost silent film was set in the small shipbuilding town of Danforth. Young Albert Walker ( Arthur Hoyt ) recognizes, and is very concerned, that German sympathizers, spies and draft evaders, by voicing their doubts about the United States involvement in the war, are having a harmful effect on the townspeople's patriotic spirit. He decides to silence these " yellow dogs " by recruiting the boys of Danforth into a club, headed by young patriot "Nosey" White ( Antrim Short ). They device a plan to challenge the unpatriotic remarks by giving the speaker a card labelled " yellow dog." One day while Nosey is visiting his sweetheart Kate Cummings ( Clara Horton ) he overhears her father ( Alexander Cummings ) in conversation with a group of German spies. The agents plan to set fire to the shipyard, Nosey hurriedly informs his father, who rushes to the scene. A fight ensues and one of the spies is shot. Finally Albert and Nosey expose Cummings and the German is sent to prison. This overt World War I propaganda film was based on a story written by Henry Irving Dodge and filmed at Universal Studios. Antrim Short and Clara Horton were also in the films Tom Saywer 1917, and Huck and Tom 1918.
