Tom Rothman, Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Motion Picture Group, has been named the recipient of the Producers Guild of America’s (PGA) 2017 Milestone Award. The award is the PGA’s most prestigious honor, recognizing an individual or team for their historic contributions to the entertainment industry.

The award will be presented to Rotham at the 28th annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony on January 28, 2017 at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles.

Happy Friday friends! It’s not only the end of the week, but the beginning of the month of October as well, so obviously it’s time for a new set of Academy Award predictions. It’ll be an interesting new set as well, considering the things that I’ve seen since last time. Honestly, with Miles Ahead debuting tomorrow at the New York Film Festival, the list of unseen titles is shrinking by the day. As such, there’s hopefully a bit of clarity in the race, while also suggesting which categories will be the stronger ones this year and which ones will be the weaker ones (in fact, look for a piece on that next week). Right now though, I’ll give you a quick preview and then dive right into these Oscar predictions! The big things to keep in mind with this Academy Award nominations update is...

The New York Film Festival just gave us one more precious piece of the Oscar puzzle this past weekend in Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies." While it wasn't a critics' darling akin to Spielberg's last film "Lincoln" (another Nyff premiere), it still seems like a pretty safe bet to be a considerable player in this year's race. Indiewire's Eric Kohn called it "a smart, enjoyable Cold War espionage tale" superior to many of Spielberg's recent Oscar-nominated works (remember that even "War Horse" got nominated for best picture), so unless it bombs at the box office or the year's remaining question marks all hit it out of the park, Spielberg's "Bridge" doesn't look like it will have trouble staying in the Oscar race. And now we wait. Not until next month's AFI Fest (where "American Sniper" and "Selma" jumped into the race last year) — which brings us...

With just a month and a half until its November 13 release date, Paramount Pictures has pushed its upcoming thriller Rings, a sequel to The Ring, to 2016. Variety reports that the movie will likely open sometime in the first quarter of 2016, although a specific release date was not given at this time. The move comes just weeks after the studio slotted release dates for potential Oscar candidates The Big Short, opening in wide release on December 11, and Anomalisa, which was given an awards-qualifying run in limited release on December 30.

Rings was originally scheduled to open against Warner Bros.' true story drama The 33, Universal Pictures' By the Sea, CBS Films' Love the Coopers and Clarius Entertainment's My All American. Aside from that competitive opening weekend, the horror movie would also have to contend with a number of highly-anticipated movies in the weeks that followed, such as The Hunger Games...

The world premiere of Sony’s Will Smith drama will screen on November 10.

Now that we’re well into the month of September, it’s time to kick predictions into high gear. It’ll be twice a month now in terms of updates, especially now that we’re also knee deep in the fall festival season. I love this time of year so much, which makes this a pleasure, but still…it’s crunch time. You really want to start making these predictions as close to accurate as possible at this point, so while it’s still fun, it’s also work. As you’ll see below, I’ve made some changes in light of festivals like Telluride, Venice, and now the start of Toronto, with New York to come next week. With the success of "Furious 7" and "Jurassic World," Universal Pictures broke the record for the highest-grossing year ever for a studio. And it accomplished this goes in just seven months. Universal has grossed a whopping $5.53 billion, surpassing 20th Century Fox, which ended last year with $5.52 billion. "We are in business with some of the most talented people in the industry and the success of our slate this year is a testament to the creativity and vision of our filmmakers," said the studio. Universal Pictures is having a great year. In fact it has grossed $5.53 billion at the worldwide box office in 2015 to date - giving it the biggest year of all time for a single studio, and that's with five months still to go.

20th Century Fox held the previous record with $5.52 billion last year, but that was across the entire twelve months. That Universal has done this in just seven months, and without a single superhero franchise which is the genre du jour of the moment, is nothing short of astonishing.

The studio has been powered by the key global success of five quite different and diverse films - "Jurassic World" ($1.562 billion), "Furious 7" ($1.515 billion), "Minions" ($875 million), "Fifty Shades of Grey" ($570 million) and "Pitch Perfect 2" ($283 million). Even small films like "Unfriended" ($54 million) "The Boy Next Door" ($50 million) were highly profitable, and the yet to really open globally "Trainwreck" is already looking like another solid hit.

Now fully into the second half of the year (and believe it or not, we’re almost done with July), it’s the time that most start thinking about the Oscar contenders to come. Of course, I’ve already been doing that, but certain recent Trailers (one I’ve already spoken about this week in The Revenant and one I’ll be writing about on Monday in Freeheld) have worked as a fond reminder that awards season isn’t nearly as far away as you think. Universal has so far made $1.709bn in the Us and $3.292 billion internationally, according to Variety.

Jurassic World review: Steven Spielberg's classic finally gets a great sequel

The studio has fired out hit after hit this year, making $1.491 billion with Jurassic World alone.

Minions has already passed $500 million, while Fast and Furious 7 made $1.512 billion and Fifty Shades of Grey raked in $570.3 million.

Pitch Perfect 2 also hit the right notes with cinemagoers, generating $280.1 million in ticket sales.

Earlier today, Warcraft was part of Legendary Pictures' Hall H panel, alongside Crimson Peak and Krampus. Fans got their first look at Warcraft footage, with an extended sizzle reel that showed off approximately six minutes of footage, but, unfortunately, the studio isn't releasing it to the public quite yet. Since it wasn't an actual trailer, many fans have been wondering when everyone will get to see the first footage. Thankfully, director Duncan Jones revealed on his Twitter page that the first trailer will debut in November. Here's what he had to say below.

Yes folks, I’m diving back into bi-monthly Oscar predictions! At the very least, I wanted to sort of wrap up the first half of the year with a slightly different set of predictions. The Academy Awards are still a ways off in the distance, but without question we have things changing the potential contenders here and there. For example, the impetus of this extra update is to see where Pixar’s Inside Out could fit into things. I’m sticking with a big push for Ridley Scott’s The Martian, just like last time, but I wanted to take into account what the animated flick could do. Also, I wanted to fill out the technical categories a bit more, which includes some films that we haven’t talked much about. Obviously, things are still in their infancy, but I felt this was justified. Plus, who doesn’t love an update to Oscar predictions?...

I’d been planning all week to write about Ridley Scott and Matt Damon’s The Martian, which debuted an incredible Trailer at the start of the week, but decided to hold off and incorporate it into my new Oscar predictions update. Why? Well, mainly because the film appears to be exceeding even my high expectations. I said after the Trailer debut of Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ Bridge of Spies that you couldn’t bet against that one right now, but if you want to be bold, The Martian is one route to take. You’ll see in my predictions that I’ve decided to get a bit risky this time out… Yes, instead of just going with as many obvious frontrunners for Academy Awards as possible, I’m looking to see what some fresh blood here and there might look like. Almost five full months into the 2015 movie season and I’m happy to report that we know zilch about the Oscar race. Why happy? Well, it means there’s plenty of fun guesswork to be done, and I’m all about that. The Cannes Film Festival has gotten underway and that can be used for a hint or two, but right now, it’s only eliminated one film (The Sea of Trees, which seems to be out of it entirely, outside of perhaps Matthew McConaughey) and made another a question mark (Woody Allen’s Irrational Man), with some other contenders like Carol still to screen. As such, your guess is as good as mine, which is part of the early year fun, at least in my book. The one thing of note that I want to make mention of for this latest Oscar prediction update is that I expanded the fields a bit.

Too handsome to be a supporting actor, and lacking the gravitas of a major star, Ben Affleck looked to be heading towards Kilmer-ville before he released Gone Baby Gone, a dark Dennis Lehane thriller he co-wrote and directed, with brother Casey taking the lead. Follow-up The Town proved solid, but his next effort, Argo, was a surprise Best Picture winner. The fact Affleck didn't receive a Director nomination suggests he's not yet been forgiven for the likes of Gigli, but the forthcoming Lehane adaptation Live By Night should fix that.

After taking the month of March off in terms of Oscar predictions, I’m back taking a new look at what the Academy could do with this upcoming year in film. Again, it’s super early and probably silly to be focusing in on them like I am currently, but it’s also fun and gives us an idea of what movies to potentially look forward to. I’m keeping it mostly short and sweet today, just basically posting an update to the predictions (with a slight detour to discuss one contender), plus the next in line list that I know is popular as well. All of this can and likely will change in the near future, possibly even in the summer when things first begin to shape up, so stay tuned on that front. For now, enjoy these Academy Award predictions and cross your fingers that we have a good year for prestige films.

I know this seems nuts, but here I am with some Academy Award predictions for next season. We’re a long way out, yes…but for me, this is the absolute most fun time of the year, in terms of forming predictions. Why? Simply put, it’s because anything is possible. If you want to see how an odd nominee would look, you need only predict it. Leo Hannewijk, festival director at Film by the Sea in Vlissingen, has taken up a new, additional role as film commissioner in Zeeland.

His appointment comes as film activity in the region is intensifying, partly in response to the new Dutch cash rebate incentive introduced last year.

Recent films to have shot in Zeeland include Berlinale title Confetti Harvest, the first feature by Tallulah H. Schwab and Sergio Herman, Fucking Perfect, a feature doc about the titular master chef who decides to let go of his three-star restaurant Oud Sluis in the region in order to fulfill his dreams.

Also shooting in the region was Roel Reiné’s epic seafaring costume drama Michiel De Ruyter, starring Charles Dance, Frank Lammers and Rutger Hauer. A Film will be giving Michiel De Ruyter a 150-copy release in the Netherlands later this month.

They are waiting to tie the knot off screen, but it looks like Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are preparing to celebrate a wedding on film.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the engaged couple is slated to reunite on the big screen for the first time since 2005's “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” with their new film “By the Sea.”

Universal purchased rights to the project, which is written and directed by Jolie.

Though the production studio is staying silent on details regarding the film, a source tells THR that Angie and Brad will get hitched on-screen. Stay linked to GossipCenter for details!

The movie “Fight Club” captured the imagination of a generation, with a twist ending few saw coming and even fewer can forget. Now, Chuck Palahniuk, the author of the 1996 book the film was based on, is returning to the characters he created for a comic book sequel. Published by Dark Horse Comics, which has been publishing official sequels to Joss Whedon‘s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Angel,” and “Firefly/Serenity” for years, “Fight Club 2” will be a 10-issue series illustrated by Cameron Stewart. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie met while filming the action thriller Mr. & Mrs. Smith, which came out back in 2005, but since then they've pursued separate projects -- until now. With the second movie she’s directed now in post-production, Angelina Jolie has lined up her next with By The Sea. She actually penned the script and plans on also directing and starring in it.

However, joining her will be her husband Brad Pitt, making this the first time that the two have worked together since 2005′s Mr and Mrs Smith. Unfortunately, there are no plot details available on By The Sea as of yet, but Universal have already picked up the rights and are clearly pleased with what Jolie has done with Unbroken.

That movie (which is set for a Christmas release) is based on the true story of Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini and adapted from author Laura Hillenbrand’s bestseller. Universal Pictures has prevailed in a studio bidding war, picking up world rights to the drama By The Sea that will mark the first time Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have starred together since Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2007.

Jolie will write and direct the film, cementing her relationship with the studio, which has set a December 25 Us release for her likely awards season contender Unbroken. That film is in post.
