2020’s Covid-19 pandemic was a weird, isolating time, particularly for filmmakers and natural storytellers. Joe Begos’ Jimmy and Stiggs isn’t about the pandemic or even set during that period, but it’s a movie that was born out of this event and is very much in conversation with this challenging, reflective, isolating time. And it’s DIY horror at its finest.
Begos has always been an incredibly hands-on filmmaker who completely immerses himself in his productions. However, his level of involvement in Jimmy and Stiggs reaches new heights. Begos writes, directs, serves as production designer, and even stars in the movie, which makes Jimmy and Stiggs an especially intimate and personal project for him. Jimmy and Stiggs is an insane alien splatterfest, but it also tells a beautiful story about friendship, codependency, and paranoia that’s the perfect film to be born out of the pandemic. It’s a...

As far as Christmas movies go, the formula hasn't been rewritten in a long time. Every year, people watch their same old favorites, and new ones don't exactly represent a twist on the classic narrative structure where, during the holiday season, everyone ends up getting along, Christmas is saved, and jingles play as the credits roll. 'Tis the season to populate the watchlists with your favorites, whatever genre they're in.
Horror is always a curious pick for Christmas movies. As distant as both worlds feel, there's almost a natural relationship audiences have built throughout the years. From the violence-fest that is the Silent Night, Deadly Night franchise, to more mainstream picks like Krampus, Christmas seems like a natural transition from Halloween for fans to indulge in gore extravaganzas to watch on Christmas morning with their loved ones.

In today’s movie landscape, its easy to get a sequel or remake greenlit, particularly in horror, but what about an original movie that is a heavy homage to an older title? This can give is something fresh and fun if done well. It has to have the right ingredients like the right actors on screen, the right script, and know exactly what it is and what it’s meant to accomplish. Indie director Joe Begos was the right guy to give us a wholly original genre flick that came out in 2019 to seemingly good reviews but little fanfare 4 years later. Two years ago, during the lockdown, I wrote that I had become addicted to those little bird-box libraries that make walking here something of a literary pilgrimage.
I’m still addicted. And almost two months ago, just before the writers strike began, I made a charming discovery–that one of my neighbors is a Very Famous Writer– all thanks to his sidewalk library.
The writer will remain unnamed, because privacy is something to be respected, even by reporters. But here’s the short form:
About four o’clock one afternoon, before the dog-crowd comes out, I felt a need for one of those short, head-clearing walks. A good target, I figured, would be a spot some blocks away, where somebody or other was maintaining what I’d long thought was the best little library in town. I won’t give titles, because some of those might tip the owner’s identity.

I’m never quite sure with Haunted House attractions movies. The attractions themselves have never really interested me despite being a huge horror fan, so maybe that’s part of the reason. But they also always seem so formulaic, so I am happy to report that Autumn Road at least tries to do things a bit different with the idea.
The disappearance of a young girl effects the local town and in particular two twins who run a, you’ve guessed it, haunted house attraction, and an aspiring actress who soon becomes friends with them. The story isn’t centred on the haunted house attraction and that’s definitely a good thing, as when it does show up properly it’s towards the end of the movie and it feels like something fresh. If...

Los Angeles-based Dark Star Pictures has acquired the North American distribution rights to the festival midnighter Dementia Part II as part of their exciting collaboration with horror leader Bloody Disgusting, the companies announced Monday morning.
Taken from the pages of Sam Raimi, and delivering absurd gross-out humor and nonstop mayhem, the making of Dementia Part II came out of a dare from Chicago’s Cinepocalype Film Festival and the movie’s producers Jd Lifshitz and Raphael Margules. The two must produce a feature-length midnight movie from concept to finished product in one month so that it could make its World Premiere on the last night of the film festival. The film turned out to be Dementia Part II, a tongue-in-cheek sequel to Mike Testin’s 2015 original film.

2020 sucked in so many ways, but nobody told the movies. Here are some of my favorite things from a very, very weird year for all of us.
Color Out of Space (dir. Richard Stanley)
Richard Stanley’s return to directing after too many years away resulted in one of my favorite films of 2020 full stop, containing a great, unhinged performance from my favorite actor Nicolas Cage. It’s a neon-soaked nightmare and features maybe the second most disturbing visual of any movie in 2020; I won’t say what it is except that it involves family bonding. This is a bold, confident film, one that's weird, but never cold and disturbing without the nihilism of, say, Stanley's own Hardware. It's a horror film that's not afraid to go to really big places. It presents us with a true, exciting vision. Richard Stanley is back, and he's brought the best Lovecraft adaptation in 30 years with him.

Stephen Lang looks like he was carved out of granite and the actor gives off the impression that he’s someone you definitely don’t want to mess with. He’s leveraged that to great effect, too, by building a solid career out of playing the bad guy, although he’s also portrayed more sympathetic figures in the likes of Jason Momoa actioner Braven and entertainingly gory B-movie Vfw.
One of the 68 year-old’s most memorable recent roles, though, was in Fede Alvarez’s horror/thriller hybrid Don’t Breathe, where he played the terrifying antagonist. The pic was made for less than $10 million and went on to score over $150 million at the box office, as well as receiving enthusiastic reviews that praised both the sense of atmospheric dread and Lang’s performance.
Given the profit margins, it wasn’t surprising when a sequel was handed the green light, and Don’t Breathe 2...

2019 was truly a gift for horror fans, as we were inundated with tons of amazing content, both on the big and on the small screen as well. In fact, it was hard to keep up with everything, which is why I’m bummed I still haven’t had a chance to catch up with several films that most likely would have ended up on this list. That being said, after taking in more than 300 movies (both horror and non-genre included) and several television series to boot, here’s my rundown of my favorite genre entertainment from 2019:
Please keep in mind that I only include films that have received an official release during 2019, so films like Vfw, First Love, Something Else/After Midnight, Come to Daddy, The Vast of Night, and Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street will most likely have to hang in there until next year.
Enjoy!

Starring Stephen Lang, William Sadler, Martin Kove, David Patrick Kelly, Sierra McCormick, Tom Williamson, Travis Hammer, George Wendt, and Fred Williamson. Vintage grainy action fun. The Dallas-based company has produced titles including S. Craig Zahler’s Bone Tomahawk, Brawl In Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete. Fangoria’s production banner is becoming a tell-all for cinematic expectations, minimum requirements including gore, violence, and oh, more gore. Joe Begos’ Vfw is the latest outrageous splatter flick to promote the iconic horror brand, and let me tell you – it delivers as suggested. That’s both a positive and negative depending on which filmmaking aspect […]

Don't Breathe star Stephen Lang says he has read the script for the upcoming sequel, and the actor is impressed with what's been written. In the original movie which turned out to be a sleeper hit, Lang starred as a deadly blind man hunting a group of petty criminals who broke into his home. While promoting his newest movie Vfw at this year's Fantastic Fest, Lang revealed to Dread Central he's since seen the script for Don't Breathe 2, and it sounds like fans are going to love it. "I've read the screenplay [for Don't Breathe 2]," Lang says, adding, "and it's really good!" When asked if co-star Jane Levy will return as Rocky, Lang was a bit more reserved, only responding, "That I can't tell you."
Released in 2016, Don't Breathe was directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead) using a script co-written by Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues. In the horror thriller movie,...

Fantastic Fest 2019 Review: Drugged-Out Punks Pick the Wrong Battle in Joe Begos’ Crazy New Film Vfw
Vfw is the latest film from Joe Begos and it will melt your face, your mom’s face, and the face of everyone you’ve ever met. A throwback to gnarly ’80s B-grade action and horror, the film stars genre greats Stephen Lang, Martin Kove, William Sadler, Fred Williamson, and George Wendt as a group of Vietnam vets who have to defend themselves and their bar from an onslaught of mutated zombie drug addicts. It’s kind of The Expendables movie that we never got, but always deserved.
The film takes place in a world gone to shit, where a drug called Hype has taken over the streets and the police and government have essentially given up trying to control it. It’s highly addictive and turns its users into mindless, violent, bloodthirsty beings who will go to any measure for their next fix. One night, our aging soldiers have...

As the next Brooklyn Horror Film Festival draws near it is time once again to drop another wave of genre and horror goodness upon us. Of particular interest is the Canadian Indigenous Zombie flick Blood Quantum from Jeff Barnaby, Joe Begos' new horror Vfw and Carlo Mirabella-Davis' Swallow, which has been winning raves all along the circuit. In the short film program I'm going to play favorites here and point out that our own Izzy Lee's The Obliteration of Chickens will play at the fest. Also, my friend Laura Sanchez Acosta's Caw (Spanish title La Solapa) will play at the fest after winning the Blood Window Award at the Panama Horror Film Festival. All the feature and short flims are featured in the gallery...
