For years, the terror of Five Nights at Freddy’s was rooted in confinement. You were trapped in a box, a tiny office where threats came to you. Secret of the Mimic rips that box open, letting the fear seep into a much larger space. Here, you are an “asset retrieval specialist,” a detached corporate title for someone sent into the sprawling, dust-choked halls of Murray’s Costume Manor.
This location is a boneyard of discarded identities, rows upon rows of mascot suits staring out with glassy eyes. Your job is to find one specific prototype lost within this mausoleum: an endoskeleton known only as The Mimic.
The game’s core idea creates a different kind of dread, one that feels reminiscent of the quiet paranoia in a film like John Carpenter’s The Thing. The threat is not a creature hunting you down a hallway; it is the potential...

When it launched, Fallout 4 was quite a controversial game. However, Bethesda’s incredible world design and entertaining gameplay ultimately made the RPG a blast to play for loyal fans. Even though it’s been a decade since the release of the title, it’s still one of the best Fallout games to jump into.
What makes Fallout 4 truly unforgettable? Well, it’s the terrifying roster of monsters and enemies that lurk in the game’s irradiated hills and forests. Among them is the Legendary Alpha Deathclaw, a beast that veterans don’t dare to provoke. However, a new discovery has once again reminded players why getting near this monster is a bad idea.
Even the vault corridors aren’t safe in Fallout 4
Alpha Deathclaws are one of the deadliest creatures in the world of Fallout 4. These monsters are a variant of the normal Deathclaws with enhanced damage, speed, and health.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is backward compatible with its predecessor's games, but that doesn't mean every Switch game is without issues on the new hardware. Nintendo released a list of games with Switch 2 compatibility issues shortly after the console was revealed – some that wouldn't launch at all, and others with different, untold issues once in the game.
Said list has now been updated with a new Pdf from Nintendo, which delineates which games are already scheduled to have their issues resolved. Among these are live-service giant Fortnite, which will release a new version exclusively for the Switch 2, rather than use an updated Switch 1 game client. Other notable heavy hitters on the list are Doom Eternal and NBA 2K25, both of which will have their compatibility issues resolved with an update.

A few years ago, we reviewed the high-concept indie Choo Choo Charles, in which the player was relentlessly stalked by an unholy hybrid of spindly spider demon and traditional steam locomotive. Picture Thomas the Tank Engine by way of Amnesia and you’re in the right ballpark.
It was a knowingly quirky elevator pitch and one that you’d think would remain quite singular in the grand scheme of things. At the very least, it’s a statistical improbability that the same idea would crop up again in the career of the same games journalist. And yet, with RailGods of Hysterra today entering Early Access, we find ourselves experiencing a profound sense of déjà vu.
After all, we are now in the extraordinary position of being able to claim that: “if we had a penny for every time we covered a low budget, cosmic horror title, set in an open...

Developed by Superlou, Finding Frankie has made its way onto consoles after an incredibly successful launch on Steam back in October 2024. The question is though, does the colorful, energetic, parkour-having platformer jump across to consoles well enough to warrant it?
Finding Frankie puts you in the shoes of a game-show contestant part of the final televised edition of a failing TV show, as you navigate around the parkour park, all whilst being chased by giant, animatronic characters that’ll make you feel like you’re always a step away from death.
By and large, front-and-center, the best part of Finding Frankie is the parkour, and then some. The story is thin, and for you to piece together through the limited dialogue and bits and pieces in the environment, but the gameplay, audio, and atmosphere are bang on to the point that you won’t care. Composers Joe Henson and Alexis Smith, known collectively as The Flight, are responsible for the epic, breathtaking score you can hear in the recently released Ubisoft video game Assassin's Creed Shadows.
Having previously worked on Assassin's Creed Odyssey, they return to the long-running video game series to deliver a score that blends modern soundscapes with traditional Japanese instruments. In the process, they enrich the 16th-century Japan setting, fusing past and present to enhance the emotional depth of the game's narrative.
No strangers to video games, Joe and Alexis' credits include critically acclaimed titles Alien: Isolation and Horizon: Zero Dawn. They've also ventured into television with projects like Lockwood & Co. and Drugsland.

Initial Episodes of ‘TerrorBytes’ Docuseries Are Well-Crafted Love Letters to Horror Gaming [Review]
“For a period, it really seemed like survival horror had died. But like the zombies that plague its hallways, it always gets back up. You cannot kill survival horror.”
So posits Doctoral Researcher, Kaytlin Blackmore, in TerrorBytes: The Evolution of Horror Gaming’s debut episode. It’s a rhapsodic reflection on how the genre in question has managed to endure across the generations, in the face of ever-shifting consumer tastes, adversarial cultural forces, and unfavourable regime changes on the publishing front. More importantly, though, it’s just a fundamentally warm and fuzzy sentiment that resonates throughout the entirety of this community-backed docuseries.
Constructed in a way that recalls the reverent originals that you often find while browsing Shudder (i.e. Horror’s Greatest or The 101 Scariest Horror Movie Moments of All Time), TerrorBytes is first & foremost an admiring look at survival horror over the ages. So rather than scrutinising the...

Alien: Romulus divided the Alien fan base but has since gained a cult following. Director Fede Álvarez says the follow-up film will venture into new places never before seen in the franchise.
Director Fede Álvarez says they're still developing the script for the Alien: Romulus sequel, which will expand Rain Carradine's story arc. "[Co-writer] Rodo [Sayagues] and I are working on that right now. We're excited about where it can go," he told Empire. That's great news for fans of Romulus, which was considered a return to form for the franchise. As a direct sequel to the Alien, Alien: Romulus adopted the tone and aesthetic of the Ridley Scott original. Alvarez's film also featured references to the broader Alien franchise, including the Alien vs. Predator games and Alien: Isolation.

Fede Alvarez Wants To Try Something New With Alien Romulus Sequel: ‘We Can Go Into Uncharted Waters’
With Alien: Romulus, director Fede Alvarez aimed to make something that neatly slotted between Alien and Aliens – returning to the original two classics, while also liberally referencing everything from Alien: Resurrection and Prometheus, to the beloved Alien: Isolation video game. As a result, his film brought new characters and variations on the Alien mythology – but was all about capturing that legendary iconography anew.
If a Romulus sequel does happen, though, it seems Alvarez plans to go in the opposite direction – taking Alien somewhere more unexpected. “Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now,” the filmmaker tells Empire. “We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.” The plan, he hints,...

The Alien franchise has a rich mythology that has raised many questions that viewers have speculated about since Ridley Scott released the first movie back in 1979. While aspects of the Xenomorph’s lifecycle and the origins of this alien species were expanded upon in subsequent sequels, prequels, and spin-offs, there are still plenty of mysteries at the heart of this series. Although Scott’s underrated prequel series, which includes Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, answered some questions, it also added new layers of mystery and complexity to the franchise.
As one of the greatest sci-fi franchises ever made, Alien has provided endless entertainment to generations of viewers and has continued with new installments right up to this day. Ever since Sonic the Hedgehog hit the big screen, video game adaptations have seen an increase in quality. These adaptations are no longer just successful as standalone productions; they also excel in representing their source material. Beyond Sonic, titles like The Last of Us, Arcane, and Fallout have succesfully adapted from games to screen. Similarly, movies such as Lucasfilm has expanded their universes into games with the Star Wars Jedi games and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Adaptations today not simply adapt, but also enrich the original universes.
Like all adaptations, creators have the liberty to reimagine the source material to varying degrees. For now, the focus will be on whether or not it keeps familiar elements and whether or not it keeps a familiar story. A familiar element is not just names taken from the source, but also what are often considered the essential elements like lore, characters traits and struggles.

Alien: Rogue Incursion successfully immerses players in the renowned Alien universe with intricate landscapes that pay homage to the flicks. The abandoned research facility on the frozen planet of Purdan shares the unsettling aesthetics of Lv-426, with cold, snowy vistas and gloomy interiors that feel both familiar and terrifying.
Survios has painstakingly recreated each site, using complex textures and realistic lighting to evoke a sense of fear. Shadows flicker ominously, and the interplay of light and shadow heightens the tension, transporting players to a world where danger lurks around every turn. This emphasis on visual realism improves immersion and encourages players to explore the locations, making them feel like active participants in a living, breathing horror narrative.
The acoustic design of Rogue Incursion is also impressive, emphasizing the immersive experience. Ambient sounds, such as metal creaking, vent hissing, and distant growls from xenomorphs, create a frightening soundtrack that puts players on edge.

After the disappointment for horror fans at The Game Awards this year, horror fans got their redemption in short order with The Horror Game Awards 2024. And unlike TGAs, Silent Hill 2 wasn’t shut out. On the contrary, Bloober Team’s remake of Konami’s classic took home Game of the Year honours, along with three other awards.
In addition to Game of the Year, Silent Hill 2 earned awards for Best Performance (Luke Roberts as James Sunderland), Best Soundtrack (Akira Yamaoka) and Best Survival Horror Game. And while Silent Hill 2-related, but technically not, Masahiro Ito won the Lifetime Achievement Award for his career’s work.
Meanwhile, Wrong Organ’s Mouthwashing and The Chinese Room’s Still Wakes The Deep were the other multiple award winners of the show. Mouthwashing took home Best Narrative and the Players’ Choice Award, while Still Wakes The Deep won awards for Technical Achievement and Best Indie Horror.

While Alien: Romulus connected parts of the franchise's original timeline to Ridley Scott's prequels, I was disappointed to see one spinoff found itself not only forgotten as a whole, but particularly one of its best elements. Following the muted responses to both Prometheus and Covenant, co-writer/director Fede Álvarez made the very smart move in coming into the franchise by generally taking things back to the basics. Gone was the convoluted storytelling about humanity's creators, the Engineers, and meeting the founder of Weyland Corp, and instead was a more grounded focus on characters meeting the very real threats of the xenomorphs and facehuggers.
That's not to say that Alien: Romulus wasn't without its fair share of connections to its other movies. The immediate planet it's set on, as well as the titular space station, are both owned by Weyland-Yutani, while the black goo from Prometheus that holds transformative abilities makes a return,...

Fans of the Alien franchise will no longer be able to watch three of the series' films on Hulu after Dec. 31. Alien, Alien 3, and Alien: Resurrection will leave the streaming platform at the end of the year.
The Alien franchise launched in 1979 with the titular film, directed by Ridley Scott and written by Dan O'Bannon. With a cast that included Sigourney Weaver and Tom Skerritt, Alien followed a simple premise, detailing the events of spaceship crew as they are hunted by a deadly alien creature. While the film initially received mixed reviews from critics, Alien won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and would later become regarded as one of the most influential sci-fi/horror films of all time. The success of Ridley Scott's Alien launched the franchise, which has gone on to spawn more films, books and video games.

On Earth, Alien: Earth offers plenty to scream about.
Bloody Disgusting shared a compilation of official footage from Noah Hawley's Alien prequel series, following its release earlier today as part of Disney+'s 'Coming In 2025' trailer. Showing off a spaceship's interior and a group emerging from the water to investigate a cave, the promo also includes a voiceover revealing "this ship collected specimens from a far-away world" before labeling them as "monsters." This warning is accompanied by a shot of Earth reflected against a Xenomorph's head, though who the creature is attacking remains unknown.

The Silent Hill 2 Remake took the world by storm when it debuted, offering players a faithful recreation of the original with a slew of extra new features that fans and newcomers greatly appreciated. While one can spend hours finding all the major differences between the original Silent Hill 2 and the remake, there are plenty of other amazing horror games to play afterward. While there are generally good horror titles like Alien: Isolation, there are a lot that fit the Silent Hill 2 niche quite well, giving players some familiar experiences to jump into after beating the Silent Hill 2 Remake. A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead is not the first horror game to feature blind enemies that are hypersensitive to the sounds you make. House of Ashes has its gnarly space-vampires that rely on echolocation to get around, The Last of Us has its iconic Clickers — caked in fungi that obscures all but their ears — and The Callisto Protocol has its (not at all iconic) Clicker knockoffs. Meanwhile, if we were to go back as far as Resident Evil 4, we’d find the hulking Garradors; feral gladiators whose eyes have been sewn shut and who will instinctively charge at the slightest of vibrations.
Anyway, the point is that it’s hardly a revolutionary concept. Should we expand the parameters a little to include creatures that enjoy perfect 20/20 vision — but still boast highly attuned hearing nonetheless — then we’d also have to account for the likes of Amnesia: The Bunker...

20th Century Studios will release “Alien: Romulus” on videocassette for the first time in nearly 20 years. The studio announced the VHS version at the Beyond Fest movie convention recently. Director Fede Alvarez revealed collector’s editions of the film on tape will be available starting December 3, 2024 to celebrate 45 years of the popular “Alien” franchise.
“Alien: Romulus” takes place between the original 1979 “Alien” film directed by Ridley Scott and James Cameron’s 1986 “Aliens.” The movie follows a group of young scavengers who encounter deadly Xenomorph creatures while exploring an abandoned space station. Released in theaters earlier this year, the film has earned over $350 million worldwide on a $80 million budget. Only “Alien” prequel movie “Prometheus” made more money from the series.
The VHS release is meant for collectors and fans of the “Alien” movies. It will feature special original cover art of a monster threatening the main character, designed by artist Matt Ferguson.

After an entire decade, a sequel to Alien: Isolation has finally been announced. This announcement also comes months after Alien: Romulus brought Xenomorphs, facehuggers, and corporate androids back to the big screen to significant financial and critical success. These Alien projects are very similar in both their strengths and weaknesses, as they both bring the franchise back to its absolute basics and must now figure out what to do next.
Alien: Isolation distills the Alien franchise down to its most essential parts by mostly utilizing the first movie. Starring the daughter of Ellen Ripley, Alien: Isolation takes place on a derelict space station that is overrun by rogue androids and stalked by a menacing Xenomorph. Alien: Isolation is very similar to Alien in the basic plot of a single woman creatively avoiding a Xenomorph until she finishes it off by destroying the spacecraft theyre both on.

It's sometimes hard to believe that Alien: Isolation was released in 2014, considering not only how cutting-edge it was, but also how it was the last Alien product, outside of maybe Romulus, that truly nailed the feeling of being hunted by the titular creature. Alien: Isolation was a truly genre-defining game, offering plenty of chilling scares and tense moments thanks to its beautifully made AI, which made the Xenomorph feel suitably unpredictable and powerful. Outside some technical issues early on, Alien: Isolation has only grown more refined, so a sequel perhaps hasn't been on the minds of its fans.
Luckily, it has been confirmed that Alien: Isolation 2 is in the works, and it's hopefully coming sooner than some may anticipate. It promises a spooky time with the creepy crawly giving fans a whole set of new nightmares, and will likely improve on not just the groundbreaking AI from the first game,...

When it comes to game development, variety is always a blessing and a sight to see, especially when veteran devs are the ones who are spreading their wings into new genres within the games they are already developing.
In this list, we will talk about a few different examples where veteran devs created a game familiar to players but added a small twist that many players didn’t see coming.
5. Digital Extremes – Warframe Warframe fits into so many categories its hard to list. Image Credit: Digital Extremes
I have included this as the first point in this list as Digital Extremes have done a fantastic job working on Warframe over the past 11 years as it has expanded from a simple game in which players could use multiple weapons to complete certain missions.
However, throughout these many years, Digital Extremes has managed to expand Warframe into numerous different genres, even if only in small missions.

Ten years ago, Japanese game publisher Sega and its subsidiary Creative Assembly (Known for the Total War strategy game series) released the science fiction survival horror video game Alien: Isolation. Fallout: New Vegas may not be the first game one thinks of when Halloween approaches, but with this fun new mod the Mojave Wasteland can be turned into a playground for the spooky season. There's no denying that the Fallout franchise has its fair share of horror influences; The Feral Ghouls that roam around the Capital Wasteland and the terrifying Cazadors that plague the perimeter of New Vegas are certainly scary for some fans. Having said that, the series' tone and aesthetic aren't generally associated with pure terror, so a little helping hand is needed to complete the vision.
Posted to Nexus Mods by creator Piro, the "Halloween Special - Wasteland Psychos and Serial Killers" mod adds several fun features to Fallout: New Vegas, including three Pumpkin Masks, a "Serial Killer Hockey Mask" clearly inspired by Jason Voorhees, a Grim Reaper Scythe, and even Pumpkin Grenades to terrorize the local NPCs.
