There was a time when Netflix itself would have been considered sci-fi. High-definition movies on demand in your living room, for a monthly fee, sometimes day and date with theatrical releases? Yeah, not a thing until pretty recently, which might make you wonder how many of the sci-fi features actually on Netflix are in danger of coming true eventually.
Netflix isn't just a studio and purveyor of original movies, though -- it's also home to former theatrical releases from other studios, which linger on the service for short and long terms. An untitled UFO conspiracy thriller from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski has ignited an out-of-this-world bidding war, THR reports.
Written by Zach Baylin, the package also includes legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
Little is known about the plot, but it’s described as “All the President’s Men with UFOs.” No stars are attached and the budget range is unclear, but it is seeking a greenlight.
Part of the appeal is the veneer of authenticity to the pitch. Former United States Air Force officer David Grusch, who made headlines in 2023 when he testified before Congress that the government has been studying “non-human”spacecrafts and pilots, is said to be consulting on the project.
Amazon, Apple, Lionsgate, Paramount, and Warner Bros. are among the interested studios, with sources saying bidding is escalating “quickly and aggressively.”

The world of Hollywood is unpredictable in its own unique way, and so forging a path in this land is not a job for everyone. This couldn’t hold more true than in the case of two of Tom Cruise’s ‘prodigies,’ Glen Powell and Miles Teller. Both actors appeared in the highly successful Top Gun 2, receiving an immense boost to their careers.

Over the years, Netflix has expanded into a variety of genres with original content, but they never let go of being a go-to place for some of the best movies ever made. As the streaming wars continue and services like Disney+ and Apple TV+ continue to gain traction, Netflix is becoming less of the dominant go-to content hub that it used to be. That said, sci-fi fans can find great value in a Netflix subscription, thanks to the genre movies available on the platform.
Netflix broke out as a leader in the genre thanks to the original sci-fi series Stranger Things and that opened the floodgates to countless movies and streaming series for fans to enjoy. Much of its library consists of titles released in the past couple of decades, but there are a few classics on the streaming service for people who love all flavors of sci-fi. From big-budget...

Chris Hemsworth's villain character Dementus in Furiosa appears to be more charismatic than his previous villain roles, allowing him to showcase his usual charm uniquely. While Hemsworth is primarily known for his heroic characters, his work in comedies and as real-life historical figures has solidified his range outside the superhero genre. Dementus in Furiosa is depicted as the most unrealistic and animated villain in Hemsworth's career, emphasizing the absurdity of the Mad Max universe compared to his other more grounded roles.
The trailer for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga shows Chris Hemsworth in a major antagonist role that appears to be different from the actor's previous villain characters in one key way. While the details surrounding the upcoming Mad Max prequel movie Furiosa are being kept tight, Hemsworth's villain character Dementus looks to be just as evil as Mad Max: Fury Road's Immortan Joe, if not more so,...

Throughout the 2010s, Michael Fassbender starred in everything from the X-Men franchise, a film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Assassin’s Creed, and a Steve Jobs biopic. David Fincher’s The Killer will be the actor’s first film since 2019, and the first trailer shows Fassbender in all his ruthless glory.
Fassbender last appeared on the big screen in 2019’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Since he last portrayed Magneto, the actor has kept busy by driving race cars, currently racing in the European Le Mans Series. Now, with the first trailer being released on Netflix's YouTube, fans can get a taste of his performance in Fincher’s latest film. "Mute," directed by Duncan Jones, was released in 2018 but failed to impress both critics and audiences, earning low scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The film's visuals are stunning, but its narrative lacks substance, and comparisons to "Blade Runner" only highlighted its shortcomings. While Netflix's sci-fi TV shows have been highly acclaimed, their original sci-fi movies often disappoint, with "Mute" being one of many panned by critics.
In 2018, Netflix released its own sci-fi noir in the mold of Blade Runner entitled Mute, but unlike Ridley Scott’s futuristic masterpiece, it was panned by both critics and audiences. Directed by David Bowie’s son Duncan Jones, Mute revolves around a bartender searching for the missing love of his life in Berlin in 2035. Jones had proven himself as a formidable sci-fi filmmaker with 2009’s Moon, and the cast includes such stars as Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, and Justin Theroux, but Mute was a resounding failure.

Sometimes, when you’re looking to be entertained, only a thriller will cut it. If you ever find yourself feeling like life is getting inexplicably dark, and morality is becoming more ambiguous, immersing yourself in a tense world of serial killers, terrorists, and crooked sleazebags of all kinds is a pretty great form of escapism. The genre is broad enough to encompass a wide variety of tropes, so you could probably watch thrillers forever and never get bored.
Netflix’s thriller offerings are surprisingly well-rounded, offering a good mix of undisputed classics from the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Paul Greengrass as well as newer indie flicks that you may have missed. Whether you’re looking to revisit an old favorite, fill an embarrassing gap in your movie knowledge, or find something new and cutting-edge that will blow your mind, the genre always has something for you. Chris Hemsworth clarifies previous comments about taking a break from acting due to health risks. He has consistently been working for over a decade with other projects on the horizon. The actor recently appeared in Spiderhead and Thor: Love and Thunder. This week, he will be starring in Extraction 2, reprising his role of Tyler Rake. Hemsworth is also slated to appear in the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa as well as Transformers One, both of which are set for release in 2024.
Speaking with Et, Hemsworth claims that previous reports on his acting break were “blown out of proportion.” While Hemsworth admitted that he spent time reflecting on his health, the actor said that he is “healthier than [he’s] ever felt.” Hemsworth mentioned that he has “three kids that [he] want[s] to spend more time with.” Because of this, the actor will be more “curated” about the projects that he selects.

According to Chris Hemsworth, Furiosa has been the most satisfying movie-making experience of his career, even more so than Thor. Serving as a prequel of sorts to Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa chronicles the origin story of Charlize Theron's hero, this time played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Hemsworth plays Dementus in the film, the central antagonist.
As the Furiosa release date inches ever closer, Hemsworth gushes in a recent profile with GQ about just how proud he is of the upcoming film. The actor calls director George Miller "masterful" and explains how satisfying a creative experience it was to play Dementus, an evil biker warlord. Check out Hemsworth's full comment below:
“I came into that film exhausted. I thought, ‘How am I going to get through this?’ Week one of rehearsals with [Miller], all of a sudden it was this reigniting of my creative energy.” [It was] by far the best experience of my career,...

From the first Extraction film to fellow mercenary thrillers like Ronin and John Wick, there are plenty of great action thriller movies like Extraction 2 to watch before the Chris Hemsworth-starring sequel arrives on Netflix. Set to be released on June 16, Extraction 2 sees black ops mercenary Tyler Rake (Hemsworth) take on another daring rescue mission, this time springing the family of a notorious Georgian gangster out of prison. Not only is stuntman-turned-filmmaker Sam Hargrave back in the director’s chair but Joe Russo is back to write the sequel’s script, serving as a producer alongside his brother and Avengers: Endgame co-director Anthony Russo.
To make the wait for Extraction 2 go by a little faster, there are plenty of other great action movies to check out. There are other high-stakes actioners about skilled operatives embarking on a rescue mission, like the father-daughter story of Taken or the father-son story of Sleepless.

While director Joseph Kosinski’s 2022 movie Spiderhead was nowhere near as successful as his earlier hit Top Gun: Maverick, the Netflix satire did allow the helmer to parody his own blockbuster’s ending. Top Gun: Maverick’s Joseph Kosinski followed the movie with the Netflix sci-fi satire Spiderhead. On paper, this sounds like a surprising choice. Top Gun: Maverick was an unashamedly silly crowd-pleaser that recreated the tone and style of director Tony Scott’s original 1986 cult classic Top Gun. In contrast, Spiderhead was a darkly comedic sci-fi satire about a futuristic prison that offered a barbed critique of pharmaceutical ethics by adapting George Saunders’ acclaimed short story Escape From Spidehead.
However, Spiderhead’s underrated takedown of the carceral state may not be that far from Top Gun: Maverick’s plot. After all, Top Gun: Maverick’s Iceman cameo already implied that Top Gun 3 could revisit Scott’s original plot for the sequel.

Amid an advertising downturn, media planners will be making their more selective bets after attending the Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Newfronts this year, set for May 1-4 in New York. As executives ready their pitches, here are a few key questions for the main presenters.
Amazon
It’s already an advertising powerhouse, quietly generating more than $37 billion in ad revenue last year. But most of that ad revenue was tied to its retail business, where sellers are fighting to get in front of consumers. The Newfronts are more focused on video, where Amazon’s live sports properties and Freevee free streaming service are expected to have top billing. Thursday Night Football has quickly become the most popular live-streamed programming available, and the company is betting that its video ad business has room to expand. And there’s Twitch and the Fire TV platform, which also are expected to play a part in the pitch.

There’s no denying Chris Hemsworth is one of the biggest stars in the world. However, when you take away his work as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his filmography has quite a few misses. There’s his work in the “Ghostbusters” reboot in 2016, then you have the failed attempt to reboot the “Men in Black” franchise. Let’s not forget about the middling “Spiderhead” and “12 Strong.” But there is one shining star in his non-Marvel work—the high-octane action film, “Extraction.” Now, it looks like Hemsworth, along with filmmaker Sam Hargrave and producers/writers, the Russo Brothers are ready to turn that hit Netflix film into an official franchise with an upcoming sequel.
