Blue Eyes might be a heist movie or a policier, a revenge fable or an exercise in aesthetic sensibility. There's enough of each that it is perhaps all of them. What's certain though is that within the varicoloured hues of a neo-noir it manages a tone of almost effortless cool that recalls other highlights of genre.
Michela Cescon's début feature, Blue Eyes is an assured piece of film-making. Co-writing with Heidrun Schleef and polymath and occasional novelist Marco Lodoli, the film's episodic nature feels less televisual than literary.
Split into un-numbered chapters separated by title cards, the tale is at least at surface a simple one. There is a thief, a daylight robber, who strikes at will across Rome escaping on a scooter. The thrill of the chase is there.
Except, and one of the film's many striking decisions, it isn't. A crime thriller predicated upon...

“I’m not good at describing my films.” says the lead character in Mariusz Wilczyński’s maudlin but strangely riveting animation Kill It and Leave This Town. The Polish writer-director’s style is certainly a challenge to define. The drawing has a crude, old-fashioned charm but his subject matter is startling and often surreal, as horror, humor and nostalgia overlap. When it’s messy, it’s deliberately so: the artist spent 11 years on this, his first — and strongly autobiographical — feature.
Wilczyński provides the voice of his protagonist Mariuszek, who drifts through scenes in the life of his parents, now deceased. These range from the apparently trivial to the disturbingly significant. One of the most memorable scenes is a juxtaposition of the two. A man and a woman casually swat flies and discuss their childhoods, before they are revealed to be attending to a dead body: that of Mariuszek’s mother.

Rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh and musician Singhsta have collaborated once again, and the rap star say lockdown was the best time to drop the new track.
Titled "Billo tu agg", the song is the latest in the non-film circuit that Honey Singh has worked on with Singhsta, after "Makhna".
"This is lockdown time. The clubs are not open and no parties are taking place. I thought this is the best time to release the song when people can listen to it at home or in their cars. That is why I chose this song and that is how this song happened," Honey Singh told Ians.
About how the song came to be, he added: " ‘Billo tu agg' has been written and produced by Singhsta. He is my artiste. I signed him in 2017 and I have pushed him to do the kind of music I wanted him to do. So,...

Above: The Nose or Conspiracy of MavericksThe Annecy International Animation film festival—one of the oldest and most important animation festivals in the world—took place online this year, as many other festivals have during the pandemic. Overall the online version of the festival was strong, though it postponed a sidebar on African animation until next summer. But one clear misstep was the presentation of a number of feature films in the competition only as short extracts, or worse, promotions. While this did not diminish the overall quality of the festival’s range of movies, it was certainly dismissive of the audience, especially in the case of the film awarded the Cristal: Calamity, a Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary, directed by Rémi Chayé. That a film only accessible to the jury won the festival’s highest award is problematic. The decision to wait to release the film in theaters is fine,...
