Comedy in the 23rd Century with the crew of the USS Enterprise has always been a levity reprieve while exploring and promoting Federation ideals in the Alpha Quadrant. In Tos, most notably with the sparring comedy team of the Vulcan “straight man” in Lieutenant Spock and the “captain sarcasm” in Medical Officer “Bones” McCoy. Star Trek creators were quite smart in balancing the seriousness of first contact missions, alien species conflicts, and the dangers of unknown space anomalies within the light-hearted fun of comedy and laughter at light-speed.
With Star Trek’s first musical episode in Snw, to the adult animated Star Trek comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks – injections of comedy have always been a part of Star Trek’s appeal, and it is as alive today as it was some sixty years ago from the 1966 iconic Tos that launched a global phenomenon.

James Gunn, co-ceo of DC Studios, is a creative genius and storyteller. He has single-handedly reinvented Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy property into a worldwide franchise phenomenon, propelling Chris Pratt (Star-lord) into a bona fide “in demand” A-list action star! He is a fantastic writer and director of other superhero projects, such as DC's The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker series, which further solidifies how his witty, yet grounded-in-realism take on the human side of being a hero or an anti-hero resonates with critics and fans around the world.
And now our Saturn Award winner for Best Director (Guardians of the Galaxy) has his sights on doing the same for Wonder Woman in the wake of the rebooted Dcu launch of the soon-to-be-released Superman. Gunn recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly and confirmed that a new Dcu Wonder Woman movie is alive and well by saying this:
“We’re working on Wonder Woman.

Steve Carell dominated the Netflix landscape when The Office was available on the streaming service, becoming one of its most popular titles. However, since the sitcom left the platform, Carell has starred in the short-lived sitcom Space Force, which was canceled after two seasons.
Carell once again returned to the service with a new series in May 2025, which quickly climbed to the top of the streamer’s charts. However, the series has now been dethroned with the arrival of a sinister documentary about Osama bin Laden. Here is how the documentary’s arrival shook up the Netflix charts.

Even though The Office found a whole new second life on Netflix, and honestly felt like it was tailor-made for the platform, the truth is, if it had been a Netflix original, it likely wouldn’t have made it past a few seasons. While it thrived over nine long seasons on network TV, the current streaming landscape tells a very different story.
Post-pandemic shifts in the industry have changed the game. Studios are now leaning toward shorter, tighter seasons and wrapping up shows much faster than before. Michael Schur, the creator of this very show and also behind hits like The Good Place, has even spoken out about this trend, explaining that economic pressures are now pushing platforms to favor quick turnarounds and limited runs over long-term storytelling.

Imagine trying to redo The Office in recent years with the same ingredients that made it a pop culture phenomenon in the early 2000s. Sounds impossible right? Well, it is indeed, and even Greg Daniels knows it. So much so that the mastermind behind Dunder Mifflin’s chaotic charm claimed to be disinterested in a reboot that messes with perfection.
Therefore, when it came to his Steve Carell-led Netflix show, Space Force—although Greg Daniels joined the show to serve as the creative mind, he stayed true to his words. So, even though he used the same comedy DNA and starred Carell, Daniels refused to recycle Michael Scott’s magic.

When someone creates a show as iconic as The Office, the temptation to recreate that magic is real.

It’s true, The Office is a gem. But not everyone from today’s generation caught it the first time around. Back in the day, it wasn’t an instant phenomenon. Some folks just didn’t give it a shot, and others didn’t realize what they were missing.
Fast forward to 2020, and suddenly, The Office was everywhere again. Thanks to the rise of streaming during the pandemic, the show found new life and a brand-new audience. In fact, it became the most-streamed show in the U.S. that year, right before it left Netflix, and has been a top performer for Peacock ever since.
What’s wild is that The Office was basically built for binge-watching before binge-watching was even a thing. With its short episodes, lovable weirdos, and mockumentary style, the show was effortlessly addictive. You didn’t just watch an episode, you let five play while you “folded laundry.

Sheltered is a single-cam series that tells the story of the misfit volunteers at an overworked and underfunded pet rescue who often feel as complicated, lonely, and ‘unlovable’ as the difficult dogs and cats in their care.

CBS doesn’t have a signature single-camera workplace comedy at the moment, something ABC has with Abbott Elementary, NBC with newcomer St. Denis Medical and Fox with Animal Control.

Netflix is one of the biggest and most famous streaming services in the world, with many talked-about series in its expanding library. The platform has made many huge hits, including but not limited to Stranger Things, Squid Game, The Witcher, and Outer Banks. These shows massively grew in popularity and became staples of the Netflix brand. Every so often, Netflix has an ambitious new show to give subscribers.
However, there have been several instances when those anticipated series failed to meet viewers' modest-to-high expectations. Whether it was an adaptation of beloved source material, a reboot, a spin-off, or featured promising talent and ideas, these Netflix original shows failed to live up to the hype. Between Resident Evil, Cowboy Bebop, and Space Force, these Netflix series let critics and audiences down the most.

Steve Carell is one of Hollywood's most beloved actors. Best known as Michael Scott on The Office, Carell has also built a successful film career with classics like Anchorman and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. After conquering comedy, Carell shifted to dramatic roles in The Big Short and Foxcatcher, earning his first Academy Award nomination for the latter. Recently, he's returned to television, delivering acclaimed performances in The Morning Show (Apple TV+) and The Patient (FX), and signing on for a new HBO series. However, his most lucrative role might be voicing Gru in the six films in the Despicable Me franchise.

Jimmy O. Yang almost didn’t make it to the first day of shooting.
To get into the mindset of his character on Hulu’s incredibly meta new series Interior Chinatown — in which the 37-year-old actor plays Willis Wu, a humble background character in the show’s fictional police procedural, Black & White, who thinks he’s living a real life — Yang went method. He purchased some grubby garments from Goodwill, put on a pair of old shoes he still had from his early days waiting tables, and, for the grand sum of $1500, purchased the crappiest car he could find, a 1999 Toyota Corolla.
He did such a good job, the guards at the Fox lot, where the show shoots, wouldn’t let him through the gates when he turned up for Day One of production.
“The security guard would not give me the time of day,” he recalls to The Hollywood Reporter.

Plot: Based on Charles Yu’s award-winning book of the same name, the show follows the story of Willis Wu, a background character trapped in a police procedural called Black & White. Relegated to the background, Willis goes through the motions of his on-screen job, waiting tables, dreaming about a world beyond Chinatown and aspiring to be the lead of his own story. When Willis inadvertently becomes a witness to a crime, he begins to unravel a criminal web in Chinatown, while discovering his own family’s buried history and what it feels like to be in the spotlight.

Netflix has released the trailer for its literary romance drama “Lonely Planet,” featuring an old-school-new-school paring of Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth.
According to the official logline, the film follows a novelist named Katherine (Dern), who in search of inspiration, books a trip to a writer’s retreat in Morocco. There, she meets “a young man (Hemsworth) whose acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.”
Supporting cast members include Diana Silvers (“Space Force”), Ben Youcef (“Afraid”), Bellina Logan (“Palm Royale”), Gustav Dyekjær Giese (“The Quiet Ones”) and Dillon Lane (“The Guilty”).
While discussing the film with Netflix’s publication Tudum, Dern said what attracted her to “Lonely Planet” was “the exploration of identity and self-worth within relationships, especially in a world as intellectually charged as the literary scene.”

While talking to “Saturday Night Live” veterans David Spade and Dana Carvey on their “Fly on the Wall” podcast, comedian Punkie Johnson discussed her decision to leave “SNL” ahead of its 50th season.
Johnson revealed she began doubting her role on the prolific sketch comedy show before Season 49. “I talked to my team. I was like, ‘Look, I don’t really know if I belong at this job, so maybe I should step away,’” Johnson said. “But I told them super, super late, like right after I found out I got to go back. And it was like ‘Well Punkie, you need a plan. You can’t just quit your job.'”
Johnson decided to remain as a cast member for Season 49, and said for the first couple of weeks, things were “tremendous.”

Exclusive: Vincent Kartheiser (Mad Men) and Laura Slade Wiggins (Shameless) have signed on to star alongside Landon Ashworth (Space Force) in Go On, a fantasy drama marking Ashworth’s feature directorial debut, which will enter production in New Mexico in September.
Marking Ashworth’s first produced feature screenplay, the film follows two strangers on a remote mountain, scorched by forest fires, as they help each other process baggage from their previous lives so they can transition to the afterlife. Ashworth crafted the screenplay after losing his very young cousin, Landon Bellm, to suicide.
“Having my feature film directorial debut be my own screenplay which addresses real, meaningful, and relatable issues is an honor,” Ashworth told Deadline. “Also, having the opportunity to work with Vincent is beyond a dream come true. I’ve followed his career for over a decade and knew he needed to play the co-lead of this movie.

Justin Simien, known for being at the helm of acclaimed films and shows like Dear White People and Haunted Mansion, has navigated plenty of unexpected twists and turns in his sci-fi career journey. From developing a highly anticipated Lando Calrissian series for Disney+ to now co-creating an untitled Star Trek comedy for Paramount+, the director is boldly going where few have gone before.
Simien shared the behind-the-scenes story of developing the scrapped Disney+ show centered on everyone’s favorite smuggler, Lando, played by Donald Glover in Solo. “We had a full bible, scripts, and concept art in place,” Simien revealed. However, the plug was pulled in favor of reimagining it as a feature film spearheaded by Glover and his brother. The director said learning about the series being shelved from “the trades” was when it truly hit him.

Donald Glover's journey as Lando Calrissian has been a twisty path from Solo: A Star Wars Story. A Disney+ spinoff series was announced, and Lando was very far along when Glover announced a creative change. Then it was announced that Lando would be a movie and not a series after all, and now it seems Disney has shelved it altogether, which was all heartbreaking to filmmaker Justin Simien, who was set to direct. He found out in the worst way. "It became clear. They probably wont want me to say this, but I knew it was official when I read it in the trades. But the writing was super on the wall," Simien told Collider. He explained how far along the project was:

Friday started off with a bang as the cyber world was thrown into turmoil. With airlines in the United States facing communication issues with the Faa and major airlines grounding operations worldwide, it seemed like the world was on the brink of disaster. Screens at airports turned blue, Fids systems crashed, and chaos reigned as the systems that were meant to protect us from hackers inadvertently caused more harm than good.

Lisa Kudrow plays the jolly leader of a merry band of thieves in the official trailer for Time Bandits, the Apple TV+ fantasy comedy that co-creator Taika Waititi adapted from the 1981 Terry Gilliam film of the same name.
“Nothing is too big for us to steal,” Kudrow’s character, Penelope, explains to the series’ hero, Kevin, an 11-year-old history buff and the central child star played by Brit actor Kal-El Tuck. “Ok, now that we’re close, maybe it is too big to steal,” a deadpan Kudrow says in an otherwise absurdly comedic scene in the trailer as Penelope, Kevin and her crack team of robbers come upon a giant Trojan horse about to enter medieval city gates.
Time Bandits has its characters traveling through time and space to meet adventure at every turn as they look to plunder treasure, whether when dinosaurs roamed the Earth, as Stonehenge was created or during the Harlem Renaissance.

Most space-related films tend to be serious dramas. There are very few films that present a story set in the stars in the world beyond our planet in a satirical and humorous manner. Don’t Look Up was an apocalyptic comedy-drama, while Netflix’s Space Force tried to produce another satirical comedy, but the show fell flat. Space Cadet is the story of a young woman who had yearned to head to space since childhood but could not do so because of unforeseen circumstances she faced growing up.

Steve Carell has been responsible for some of the funniest characters on the big and small screen this century. Brick Tamland in Anchorman, Michael Scott in The Office, Gru in Despicable Me, Mark R. Naird in Space Force — the list goes on. Now, per THR's reporting, Carell is set to add another notch to his funnyman belt with a starring role in a new HBO comedy from Ted Lasso co-creator Bill Lawrence and Scrubs' Matt Tarses.
The victor of a multi-platform bidding war, HBO have ordered the as-yet-untitled show straight-to-series, with a 10-episode first season in development. Lawrence and Tarses, who are currently hard at work on Apple TV's upcoming Vince Vaughn comedy series Bad Monkey, are set to write the first episode of this show, a single-camera comedy set on a college campus that centres around the complicated relationship between an author (presumably Carell) and his daughter.
