The CBS series Bull offered a unique take on the familiar legal procedural drama. Rather than focusing on the lawyers or judges, the show centers the story on the people who really decide the outcome of a trial the jury. Bull starred NCIS' Michael Weatherly as Dr. Jason Bull, a psychologist who uses his expertise to sway the members of the jury. With the consulting firm the Trial Analysis Corporation, Bull led a crack team of experts in various fields, including the savvy hacker, Cable McCrory, played by Annabelle Attanasio, who abruptly left the show.
Cable was a major character in Bull seasons 1 and 2. Her fearless personality and cynical sense of humor brought a fresh perspective to the team that would be sorely missed both by the cast of characters and the viewers when she was unceremoniously killed off in season 3. However, as unsatisfying as Cable's death was there is...

Welcome to My Favorite Scene! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.
When the time finally came to shoot the finale for “Daisy Jones and the Six,” Prime Video’s limited series adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s blockbuster novel detailing the meteoric rise and sudden fall of a fictional 70s rock band, actress Camila Morrone was ready to loose.
While her co-stars got to off and play rockstars, her role as Camila Dunne, supportive wife of frontman Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin), called for a much more subdued performance until the climactic moment where it’s clear she is no longer the love of his life.

Set in the rock 'n' roll-heavy 1970s, Daisy Jones & The Six documents the rise and fall of a fictional rock band, with the characters played by a star-studded cast. The Prime original is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, who was inspired by the career of Fleetwood Mac while writing it. The series focuses on the origins of the titular band as they carve a niche in the Los Angeles music scene following up to the events that led to their eventual breakup. It's certainly a heartbreaking and compelling story.
Apart from the songs by its fictional band, what makes Daisy Jones & The Six more interesting is the documentary format used by showrunners Scott Neustadter and Michael H Weber (both of whom co-wrote screenplays like 500 Days of Summer). The story is narrated through flashbacks by the band members as they reunited for a...

Brooklyn-based Utopia has picked up worldwide sales rights to Hayley Garrigus’ “You Can’t Kill Meme,” a documentary feature which drills down on the political meme warfare enshrined by Donald Trump’s presidential victory in 2016.
The acquisition comes just ahead of the film’s world premiere at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival this month. An on demand release in North America is planned for this fall, Utopia announced Monday.
“You Can’t Kill Meme” explores the rise of political meme instrumentation, anticipated by a 2004 visionary non-fiction book by Kirk Packwood called “Memetic Magic: Manipulation of the Root Social Matrix and the Fabric of Reality.”
The film sees Garrigus interview Packwood and other figures in the meme magic world to trace the emergence of figures such as Pepe the Frog, originally a comic book slacker, and Kek, an Egyptian deity of darkness before dawn, in order to understand their centrality for alt-right advocacy.

If your first film is like your first-born child, then the adage would hold that it takes a village to make a movie. Especially when you’re fresh out of film school, just 24 years old, and working on a tight indie budget. From the outside, Emma Seligman’s “Shiva Baby” employs many hallmarks of independent film: It’s set in one day, shot in a single location, and features a breakout performance from a relative newcomer, comedian Rachel Sennott. But behind the scenes, there were other forces unique to indie film: A network of women — producers, actresses, and fellow filmmakers — supporting Seligman at every step.
Darkly funny and pulsing with the energy of a fresh new voice, “Shiva Baby” follows wayward college student Danielle (Sennott) on the day she runs into her sugar daddy Max (Danny Deferrari) at a family shiva. Standing between Danielle and her bagel and lox are...

“Martha: A Picture Story,” a feature documentary about trailblazing graffiti and street photographer Martha Cooper, has been acquired for North American distribution by Utopia.
Cooper was an American photojournalist and the first female staff photographer at the New York Post in the 1970s. She is best known for capturing New York City graffiti in the ’70s and ’80s. Her 1984 book “Subway Art” illustrated the subculture in New York’s transit system.
The commercial failure of the book forced Cooper to leave graffiti behind, moving on to photograph other hidden gems of the city. Only decades later would she realize her influence. It will premiere on Altavod, Utopia’s new distribution platform on Sept. 21 before being made available on other streaming platforms such as Amazon and iTunes a day later.
The release is being tied to World Alzheimer’s Day. The film was directed by James Keach, the documentarian behind “Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me,” a portrait of the country music legend’s farewell tour after revealing he had been diagnosed with the disease.
“Turning Point” investigates the complex issues facing the American healthcare system as it seeks to treat a disease that has no cure and investigates why Alzheimer’s has a disproportionate impact on minority and disadvantaged communities.
“Turning Point” originally hit the festival circuit in 2018, but has been updated to address new developments in the research field.

“Suzi Q,” a documentary about Suzi Quatro, who preceded Joan Jett onto the scene in the early ’70s as a leather-clad rock pioneer, has been picked up for North America by Utopia. The company will give the rock doc a one-night theatrical release July 1, followed by digital and DVD distribution two days later.
A U.S. premiere has been set for the Sonoma International Film Festival on March 29, where Quatro will make an appearance. The film already opened last fall in the UK and Australia, two territories where Quatro, a Detroit native, had her biggest chart successes.
Besides interviewing Quatro herself, filmmakers Liam Firmager and Tait Brady also sought out contemporaries like Alice Cooper and female musicians who felt Quatro’s impact, including Deborah Harry, Joan Jett and Cherie Currie of the Runaways, Kathy Valentine of the Go-Go’s, Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads and Donita Sparks of L7.

When the Oscar nominations were unveiled on January 15, there was a glaring omission of female filmmakers in the category for best director and it still has been top of mind as the awards season has seen a severe drought when it comes to representation of women. In order to put more light on this issue “Give Her a Break” launched a special telecast of the Oscars that will celebrate female filmmakers.
On Friday, “Give Her a Break” announced that they would launch a portal to the Oscars livestream but during the ads, they will showcase trailers of films from female directors. Honey Boy director Alma Har’el tweeted out the link to the portal pointing ou that only five women have been nominated for best director in the 92 years of the Academy Awards.

Things were looking up for women filmmakers in the 2020 awards derby — that is, until the Golden Globes shut out female directors in four major categories, including Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Drama and Musical/Comedy Motion Picture. At first, it was easy to shrug that off as the latest example of the 90-strong Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s hopeless myopia. No, they do not represent the far more inclusive Academy membership, which has been changing its stripes in recent years.

On the plus side, critics’ groups have given visibility and credibility to two films in the race: popular actress-turned-writer-director Greta Gerwig’s follow-up to Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird,” her adaptation of the American classic “Little Women” (Sony), and Lulu Wang’s original family dramedy “The Farewell” (A24). Both films benefit from strong writing, directing and performances. So it was a shock when the...
