Morrone will reportedly replace The Crown star Elizabeth Debicki, who played Jed in the first instalment. The 26-year-old actress is known for starring in the Prime Video series Daisy Jones & the Six and grabbed the limelight for her former relationship with Leonardo DiCaprio. Exclusive: Emmy nominee Camila Morrone has signed with Brillstein Entertainment Partners for representation.

Morrone is coming off the hit Amazon limited series Daisy Jones & The Six, for which she received a Best Supporting Actress Emmy nomination for her role as Camila Dunne, and the Patrica Arquette-directed Gonzo Girl, which recently premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Up next she can be seen starring opposite Joe Keery in the independent film Marmalade, directed and written by Keir O’Donnell.

She received critical praise for her starring role as a Montana teenager caring for her father, a veteran with a substance abuse problem, in Annabelle Attanasio’s indie film Mickey and the Bear. When the time finally came to shoot the finale for “Daisy Jones and the Six,” Prime Video’s limited series adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s blockbuster novel detailing the meteoric rise and sudden fall of a fictional 70s rock band, actress Camila Morrone was ready to loose.

The series focuses on the origins of the titular band as they carve a niche in the Los Angeles music scene following up to the events that led to their eventual breakup. Signature Entertainment have released a first-look image of Joe Keery and Camila Morrone in crime romance “Marmalade” ahead of launching global sales at Berlin’s European Film Market (EFM).

“Marmalade” is the directorial debut of actor and director-screenwriter Keir O’Donnell. The film centers on the recently imprisoned Baron (Keery) who strikes up a friendship with cellmate Otis, a man with a history of prison breaks. As the pair hatch an escape plan together, Baron recalls the story of how he met Marmalade (Morrone), the love of his life, and their Bonnie and Clyde scheme to rob a bank in order to care for his sick mother and give the couple the life they’ve always dreamed of.

Keery is best known for his role as Steve Harrington in Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” was in Disney’s “Free Guy and led comedy horror “Spree,” which premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.

CAA Media Finance is brokering the domestic deal while Wild Bunch is handling sales on the film about a serial killer who is killing sex workers in the holy city of Mashhad, a pilgrimage destination (and the second largest city in Iran). Based on a true story, the film centers on a female journalist from Tehran who is trying to track the killer down – and who faces a lot of opposition from the authorities, as many secretly support the “spider killer” for removing a scandalous element.

Brittany Snow, the Pitch Perfect franchise star whose acting credits include Hairpspray, will make her feature directorial debut on the drama September 17th for Yale Productions, whose newly minted sales stablemate Great Escape is kicking off talks with EFM buyers.

The project is based on an original story by Snow, who co-wrote the screenplay with Becca Gleason about Riley, who has recently been discharged from rehab after struggling with food and body image issues. Riley soon meets Ethan and finds herself navigating the line between unconditional love and a new addiction.

Brooklyn-based Utopia has picked up worldwide sales rights to Hayley Garrigus’ “You Can’t Kill Meme,” a documentary feature which drills down on the political meme warfare enshrined by Donald Trump’s presidential victory in 2016.

The acquisition comes just ahead of the film’s world premiere at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival this month. An on demand release in North America is planned for this fall, Utopia announced Monday.

“You Can’t Kill Meme” explores the rise of political meme instrumentation, anticipated by a 2004 visionary non-fiction book by Kirk Packwood called “Memetic Magic: Manipulation of the Root Social Matrix and the Fabric of Reality.”

The film sees Garrigus interview Packwood and other figures in the meme magic world to trace the emergence of figures such as Pepe the Frog, originally a comic book slacker, and Kek, an Egyptian deity of darkness before dawn, in order to understand their centrality for alt-right advocacy.

The coming-of-age horror-drama follows teenager Casey who becomes immersed in an online role-playing horror game, wherein she begins to document the changes that may or may not be happening to her.

The film, which will have its NY premiere later this month at the New Directors/New Films festival, is the narrative feature debut of writer-director Jane Schoenbrun. Utopia will release the film in U.S. theaters early next year and also has international rights. HBO Max has licensed U.S. streaming rights.

“Martha: A Picture Story,” a feature documentary about trailblazing graffiti and street photographer Martha Cooper, has been acquired for North American distribution by Utopia.

Cooper was an American photojournalist and the first female staff photographer at the New York Post in the 1970s. She is best known for capturing New York City graffiti in the ’70s and ’80s. Her 1984 book “Subway Art” illustrated the subculture in New York’s transit system.

The commercial failure of the book forced Cooper to leave graffiti behind, moving on to photograph other hidden gems of the city. Only decades later would she realize her influence. Many street artists refer to “Subway Art” as a street art staple. The documentary follows Cooper’s struggle to navigate her way through this new culture while embracing her passion for capturing the creativity that helps people rise above their environment.

Utopia Distribution has acquired “Turning Point,” a documentary that follows researchers in their quest to develop treatments for Alzheimer’s. It will premiere on Altavod, Utopia’s new distribution platform on Sept. 21 before being made available on other streaming platforms such as Amazon and iTunes a day later.

The release is being tied to World Alzheimer’s Day. The film was directed by James Keach, the documentarian behind “Glen Campbell… I’ll Be Me,” a portrait of the country music legend’s farewell tour after revealing he had been diagnosed with the disease.

“Turning Point” investigates the complex issues facing the American healthcare system as it seeks to treat a disease that has no cure and investigates why Alzheimer’s has a disproportionate impact on minority and disadvantaged communities.

“Suzi Q,” a documentary about Suzi Quatro, who preceded Joan Jett onto the scene in the early ’70s as a leather-clad rock pioneer, has been picked up for North America by Utopia. The company will give the rock doc a one-night theatrical release July 1, followed by digital and DVD distribution two days later.

A U.S. premiere has been set for the Sonoma International Film Festival on March 29, where Quatro will make an appearance. The film already opened last fall in the UK and Australia, two territories where Quatro, a Detroit native, had her biggest chart successes.

Film executive Danielle Digiacomo is joining the upstart distribution company Utopia as head of content, Variety has learned.

In this new role, she’ll be acquiring movies and developing release strategies for the boutique label, which last year released titles such as the drama “Mickey and the Bear” and Errol Morris’ political documentary series “American Dharma.”

“We care about the films we work with and put quality over quantity,” said musician and actor Robert Schwartzman, who co-founded Utopia in early 2019. “Danielle recognizes this and, on behalf of our entire team, we are thrilled to have this opportunity to collaborate together.”

Digiacomo previously worked as senior VP of acquisitions and strategic partnerships at The Orchard and its rebranded company 1091. When the Oscar nominations were unveiled on January 15, there was a glaring omission of female filmmakers in the category for best director and it still has been top of mind as the awards season has seen a severe drought when it comes to representation of women. In order to put more light on this issue “Give Her a Break” launched a special telecast of the Oscars that will celebrate female filmmakers.

On Friday, “Give Her a Break” announced that they would launch a portal to the Oscars livestream but during the ads, they will showcase trailers of films from female directors. Honey Boy director Alma Har’el tweeted out the link to the portal pointing ou that only five women have been nominated for best director in the 92 years of the Academy Awards.

The casting branch of the academy is only six years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 34 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that 344 feature films are eligible for the 2019 Academy Awards.

To be eligible for the consideration, the films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County by Dec. 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days. Academy rules also state that a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.

Nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards will be announced on Monday, Jan. 13, 2020. The ceremony takes place on Sunday, Feb. 9, airing live from Hollywood on ABC.
