This movie demonstrated how indian judicial system scrapped a law where widows were forbidden to live like a normal human being.
Great storyline, and amazing direction.
He is a Michelin-star chef, a judge on MasterChef, cookbook writer and a humanitarian. He is also a writer and this movie is based on his book by the same name. This is Vikas Khanna's directorial debut. A 60+-year old widow, a 9-year old untouchable girl and a transgender..the movie raises the questions about the retrogression that prevail in the most religious city that has a rich culture and history.. I have not read the book but at times it does seem to deviate from its focus... the fragments and scenes do ooze the essence of the storytelling but still do not seemingly fit well into the frames, there are few repetitive and redundant sequences too... However, commendable and subtle performances by Nina Gupta and Aqsa Siddiqui not only manage to keep it afloat but also help upraise ...it was named for academy award ... a good watch..

This film speaks of the oppression and suffering faced by a girl child and woman in India. The setting is in the ghats of Varanasi and there are 4 central characters around which the story revolves. The first is an elderly widow Noor ( Neena Gupta) who leads the life traditionally laid out for her doing puja and penance. Next is young wife of a policeman who is regularly physically abused since she cannot bear him a male child. The third is a transgender Anarkali who is used as a sex slave by the policeman even though she resists strongly. Lastly we have a 9 year old motherless girl also called Noor who is friendly with the widow where she gets a much needed affection. This little girl is a tightrope walker. ( A symbolism there ? ).
Director Vikas Khanna has made a sensitive film focusing on the plight of these women and the scenes are convincing. He is helped by some superb cinematography and the Varanasi ghats are very well captured. The loneliness , hurt, humiliation and helplessness of these characters have been portrayed well. Acting by all is top class. Neena Gupta is superb as usual.

One of the best Inde-art movie I ever saw. The story of Noor in the backdrop of old Hindu practices is amazing. The way director weaves the story around a real time law is brilliant.
I was fixated to the screen all the time. The captivating story and performance of seasoned star Neena Gupta and new kids will surely make it to Oscars.

I saw this movie when it premiered in DC in 2019. It is simply glorious. The quiet strength of Noor is captured beautifully. I wept, I applauded, I prayed and hoped... how many movies can make you experience so many emotions all at once!
Well-done! Cannot wait to see what Vikas Khanna comes out with next.

Good movie to watch for especially the friendship between two women's from different straga of society the movie delivers a good message.
Director Vikas Khanna in his debut film has already won everyone's heart. Now, can't wait to see what Vikas comes out with his next. First of all highly highly recommending everyone to watch this film. This kind of films should be watched by all.
Cinematographer Subhransu Das captured every frame beautifully. BGM is heart touching. This is the best performance of Neena Gupta I've seen till now. The child actor Aqsa Siddique as 'Chhoti' is just brilliant. Her chemistry with Noor is adorable to watch. Rudrani Chhetri as 'Anarkali' is also very good. This is one of those film that can change your thoughts about various things of society. The movie will stay with you for a long period of time.

Vikas Khanna deserves a round of applause. It was so much simpler to make a quintessential love story featuring obnoxious star kids. Instead he chose to create #TheLastColor which raises some uncomfortable questions. Should widows continue to lead an ashen existence in a dilapidated ashram? Should they always don white robes? Should they eat bland food? Are they not allowed to socialize? What prevents them from playing 'holi'? Is it their fault if their husbands died before them? This film needs your love n support, do watch it in theatres. Rating 3.5/5.
Highly recommend. Such a beautiful movie. The depiction is awe inspiring. Please do yourself a favour and watch.

Message is very nice. But after you see the movie, lot of things you just keep on wondering how they could have happened and director did not care about showing it.
The Last Color - This film by first time director Vikas Khanna totally stumped me. I did not have very high expectations from the film but was proved totally wrong.
The film touches many aspects of our Society which most of us are not comfortable in discussing. But the Director has put it out there in a subtle way with a positive note.
The film talks about the taboo around widows, street children and marginalised communities. The story weaves around these people and how their friendship grows over a period of time. The film is about keeping your promises.
Shot in the ghats of Varanasi, you see the city through a different and beautiful lens.
Neena Gupta's performance is brilliant backed by the child artist.
Overall a must watch for anyone who enjoys meaningful cinema.

I always loved neena ma'am. She is so natural in the entire movie. The bond between her and the little girl is so moving. I felt worried throughout the movie for the 2 and anarkali. It is so scary for a little girl to survive alone. The treatment a widow gets in backward regions is harsh. These practices should not be allowed, everyone should have a right to live happily. The end was so heart warming. Guys please watch this movie if you believe in realistic cinema.
Cant get the images of the movie out of my head.
The climax scene of little girl keeping her promise to Noor will break your heart. Cant get the last scene out of my head.
Chef Vikus please do not stop making films.

JUST WATCH IT. The movie has it's heart and soul at right place. Chef turned filmmaker Vikas has given us this beautiful gem to cherish. Set in picturesque Benares, The Last Color is a heart wrenching story of friendship between a Widow and an Orphan girl living on the ghats of Benares. That's all about it. Now, go and explore it yourself

Made like you're watching a production on stage and they have to keep changing the scene, definitely had potential to be a 10/10 but executed like a stutter throughout

I cant hesitate to give 10 on 10 stars to a movie which is so "in line", "maarmik" , "sanvedansheel" and "based on a a true life event". Hats off to makers, still needed some improvement in terms of Direction but overall worth a Pan-India theatrical release. No need to mention Neena Gupta and. Aqsa Siddique (Chhoti) were feather on the hat in terms of acting.

I have been to Varanasi in December last year. Initially was watching the movie for Banaras. But towards the end it has some most powerful scenes. I am in love of Banaras, Choti, Chintu and Noor.

This movie is what movies are supposed to do, we living under the roof with food on table are unaware about the unfortunate ones and highlighting such issues is the starting of resolution.
This is what bollywood is supposed to do.
We have to move away from item songs now and awake to the places which matter.
Watch it people its beautiful.
