Via his X (formerly Twitter page), The Blair Witch Project producer Michael Monello confirmed an updated and upscaled version of the movie that is now available via home video in Europe. According to Monello, The Blair Witch Project's new edition is the one he and the movie's creative team intended to release initially but couldn't due to the technological constraints they encountered when the original version debuted in 1999. When the film premiered on home video, distributors Artisan "made a huge mistake," by working from a 35mm telecine transfer rather than the DigiBeta master originally used, causing "serious motion errors." It's always amazing when a filmmaker gets to revisit the stories they never fully got to tell. Whether it be budgetary restraints or producers' influence, it's great when a director returns to the movies they created years ago, getting the chance to flesh them out in ways they couldn't before and, hopefully, granting them the cathartic climaxes they deserved. That seemed to be the intent of horror director Anthony Diblasi on his movie, 2023's Malum; focusing on a rookie cop facing off with demonic cult members, this story is an almost direct remake of the director's earlier, widely acclaimed movie, 2014's Last Shift.

Last year's Lola was a masterpiece, though it wasn't exactly a frightfest like, say, Mind Body Spirit, which drops on digital platforms this week. If the title evokes yoga vibes, that's partly the point. Yes, this movie hits a lot of notes: horror, found footage, yoga, supernatural and more. Hey, yoga once helped Giancarlo Esposito bring his iconic Breaking Bad character to life, but a fictional movie like Mind Body Spirit warns that, combined with the wrong elements, such practices can run haywire.

Directors Alex Henes and Matthew Merenda prove that the possibilities for this fun little subgenre of cinema are seemingly endless. A young rookie cop faces the worst shift of her life in an abandoned police station. Here’s our review of the indie horror, Malum, in cinemas now.

Most of us have done nightmarish shifts at work. Regardless of your industry, no one is immune to a bad day. Maybe a customer yelled at you, you had to clean up a mess of something yucky, or perhaps everything that could go wrong, just went wrong.

Still: I doubt any of us have experienced quite as bad a shift as Jessica Loren does in Anthony Diblasi’s Malum.

Malum is in fact a remake, or more of a reimagining, of Diblasi’s 2015 film Last Shift. Remaking your own film less than 10 years after it was released might seem silly, but Malum manages to successfully squeeze more out of Last Shift’s deceivingly simple premise.

The basic idea and plot are the same in both films.

New horror-focused studio Welcome Villain are aiming to be the next Blumhouse, but judging by this double bill of early releases it could be a long road. Both aim to maximise low-budget returns by restricting themselves to a single location – an approach that worked very well recently for filling station ordeal Night of the Hunted, not to mention of course the apex of horror, The Shining. But in truth neither of these makes strong use of its chosen locale, and both are tired, borderline exhausted deployments of the audience-prodding, jump-scare bag of tricks.

Studiocanal’s Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” stayed atop the U.K. and Ireland box office for the second consecutive weekend with £1.8 million ($2.3 million), according to numbers from Comscore. The film now has a running total of £6.3 million.

In its second weekend, in second place, Entertainment Film Distributors’ “Civil War,” directed by Alex Garland and starring Kirsten Dunst, collected £1.05 million for a total of £3.8 million. In third position, in its fourth weekend, Universal’s “Kung Fu Panda 4” collected £901,615 for a total of £18.5 million.

In fourth place, in its fourth weekend, Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” earned £652,128 for a total of £12.8 million. Universal’s “Abigail” debuted in fifth position with £596,590. There were no other debuts in the top 10.

While movie remakes are popular across genres (Anyone remember the 2018 remake of Garry Marshall's "Overboard"?), the horror genre is especially susceptible. The genre is unique insofar as its scares endure more than most. Where comedies and action movies, for instance, are inextricably linked to their time of release, a scary movie is a scary movie. With a fresh coat of paint, what was new three decades ago can seem fresh again.

A curious contemporary trend has emerged in which relatively recent titles are remade just a few years after their original releases. Released just 14 years after the first "Cabin Fever," the remake used the exact script as the original. Recently, horror filmmaker Anthony Diblasi released "Malum" in select theaters. "Malum," a remake of Diblasi's 2014 indie "Last Shift," isn't quite a shot-for-shot remake so much as it is a reimagining. With more money and more experience, Diblasi revisits his demonic fable in a new context.

Welcome Villain Films, a relatively new genre studios, has acquired North American rights to the gory thriller “Beaten to Death.”

The company plans to release the film in select theaters this summer with a digital release to follow.

Review: Reboots are nothing new these days, but rarely do you find a filmmaker who remakes his own film released not even ten years prior. Anthony Diblasi, a protege of Clive Barker who has produced or directed three adaptations of the British author’s writing, released Last Shift in 2014. The little-seen flick, written by Diblasi and Scott Polley, followed a rookie cop witnessing supernatural events in a police station.

Focus Features’ Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner A Thousand And One opened to a solid $1.8 million at 926 theaters — $1,942 per theater average — supported by a 96% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score and a B+ CinemaScore. It came no. 7 at the domestic box office, a strong showing for a complex, gritty film in a slow-to-recover specialty market.

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (Paramount) — a franchise reboot, not a remake or sequel — provided the weekend with the fifth straight film to open to over $30 million. While not unprecedented for the month — it last happened in March 2017, with four out of five openings over $40 million, three of those over $85 million — it’s unusual. More importantly, it reflects the steady rebound of 2023.

“D&d” received better-than-expected reviews (70 Metacritic score) and a boost from its SXSW premiere, but credit also goes to built-in interest for the world-building dice game and good word of mouth (A- Cinemascore).

Remakes are nothing new in Hollywood, and horror movie remakes have long been a thriving part of the industry. Directors will turn their creepy, viral short films into larger studio features, like David F. Sandberg did with Lights Out, and surprise foreign genre hits will sometimes get a makeover for U.S. audiences with the original director at the helm. But you’d be hard pressed to find a modern American director who’s interested in remaking their own feature film.

Enter Clive Barker protégé Anthony Diblasi, who was certainly up for the challenge when he was approached by new genre studio Welcome Villain with the possibility of remaking his 2014 low-budget gem, Last Shift. Malum is an upcoming, adrenaline-fueled horror movie centering on a rookie police officer, Jessica Loren. The movie begins with Officer Loren willingly volunteering to take the last lonely shift at an abandoned, recently decommissioned police station. Years prior, Loren's father died a mysterious and untimely death while on duty at the very same station, a station where an infamous and vicious cult also not-so-coincidentally met its demise. Planning to use her solitary hours in the building to further investigate her father's death, Loren soon finds herself terrorized by a series of unrelenting paranormal events as the mystery slowly begins to unravel.

Welcome Villain Films has teamed up with Xr content developer and publisher Top Right Corner to release a new VR survival horror game based on Malum, releasing in theaters this Friday, March 31.

The game, Flock of the Low God, is “a terrifying survival horror experience that immerses players into the thrilling world of Malum. Players will be challenged to survive their first shift at the Lanford Police Department by evading supernatural forces, unlocking new environments, scavenging weapons and tools, and defeating wave after wave of possessed cultists through intense close-quarters combat. The game will feature both single-player and multiplayer modes.”

This game was designed using sets and locations from the film, allowing players to follow in the footsteps of Officer Jessica Loren, played by Jessica Sula in Malum. Players will interact with various props, scenes, and locations recreated in screen-accurate virtual reality, including the main office, morgue, and shooting range.

Malum director Anthony Diblasi explains why the 2023 horror film is a remake of one of his previous films. Malum follows a young police officer named Jessica (Jessica Sula), who is assigned to the final shift of a decommissioned police station, only to be tormented overnight by a supernatural entity. Up first, BayView Entertainment and Vipco have released Skarecrow: A Curse Never Dies today, which looks to be an ultra-low-budget indie film centered on a killer scarecrow.

In the film, “When the vile James Brothers murder an innocent woman to take over her land, her dying breath places a curse on the family through a scarecrow. Years later, a descendent of the James family has taken his friends to the old cabin for the weekend. They soon find the curse and the scarecrow are still wanting blood.

There’s something inherently creepy about abandoned locations that make them well-suited for horror movies. The former Metro Police Department Headquarters Building, slated for demolition in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, is one of them.

Its labyrinthine layout, a dizzying maze of cell blocks adorned with sickly green tile and offices spread across multiple floors, presents the perfect setting for director Anthony Diblasi to tackle the production of Malum, an expanded retelling of his 2014 cult favorite Last Shift.

Malum marks the first original production from the new genre studio Welcome Villain Films, who invited Bloody Disgusting exclusively to the Louisville set to learn about the more extensive, bloodier reimagining. The more pressing question heading in, of course, was why remake the potently chilling Last Shift?

Diblasi answers that immediately, detailing how the desire to expand Last Shift’s audience evolved into a brand new reimagining that opened up the mythology in an exciting way.

Remakes are nothing new. They made up like 98% of the horror output through the 2000s, and though they have slowed to allow room for other types of storytelling (legacy sequels remain the current hotness), they are still very much a part of the horror landscape. The standard remakes are really no-brainers—a film reaches a certain age and the studio might want to breathe new life into it for an opportune release. Or maybe a director has a particular vision or a way to spin it for a more modern audience. And of course, foreign films are often remade in the US to make them more appealing to an American audience. The smallest subsection of remakes is a little harder to understand, and often leave audiences wondering, “Why?”

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream, Ready or Not) are back behind the camera for Scream VI, now playing in movie theaters nationwide.

In the brand new movie, “The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.”

That means we can expect themes and character arcs introduced in 2022’s Scream to deepen. With Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett at the helm, that also means brand new Easter eggs and franchise nods nestled within the slasher thrill ride.
