Samurai are among the most important people in Japanese culture and history, considering they remain a significant source of inspiration for Japanese artists. Animators have brought samurai history to life through anime, creating some amazing fight sequences and even better discussions on honor and friendship. While samurai are part of the military caste, they are also much more than that.
Samurai have a unique code of honor unlike anything else seen in the country, or anywhere in the world, for that matter. Some fantastic samurai anime are out there for those interested in seeing samurai in action. These warriors have always been a key part of anime, and while samurai anime tend to be rooted in historical realism rather than fantasy, the battles in these series are incredible. Almost everyone will find something to love in these awesome samurai anime.

Far too often these days, fantasy settings in anime are just fodder for power fantasies. However, some fantasy anime prefer to travel down a darker path. These series feature characters who've been horrendously wronged and become singularly driven by revenge.
Fantasy anime series focused on revenge often take place in dark fantasy settings, allowing viewers a break from the usual high fantasy featured in most series. While these can occasionally veer into being needlessly edgy, the best series are cathartic. Great revenge storylines push fans to think about the downsides to giving oneself over to such an all-consuming emotion, or at least offer the enjoyment of seeing a target of revenge finally get what they deserve.

Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku is a dark yet captivating anime with a promising story that has hooked fans. Following Gabimaru and Sagiri Yamada Asaemon, the series blends strong shonen themes with a dynamic character relationship that elevates the narrative. With the manga already complete before the anime aired, many believe the entire story will be animated—an expectation fueled by the show’s growing popularity. Set in a historical era on a hauntingly beautiful island, the series explores the motivations of characters trapped in a deadly quest for the Elixir of Life.
The battles and power systems are as compelling as the personal relationships driving the story. Though much of the original cast has already fallen, those still standing can fight immortal beings — and maybe even return to the lives they’ve left behind. The real strength of the series lies in the connections between characters. Gabimaru’s desire to reunite...

With the sheer amount of anime available to be watched, it's hard to commit to a huge series like One Piece, Naruto, or even something like Dragon Ball. While those three series have a ton of strengths and plenty of reasons to watch them, they also come with hundreds of episodes and several movies to watch. Some anime series are able to tell their entire stories in just a single season, allowing the casual viewer to enjoy the whole story without committing huge chunks of their time.
A single anime season can vary in length, but they're never more than around 30 episodes. Some single-season animes can tell their tales in as little as 10 episodes, while some need closer to 25. No matter how many episodes there are in a season, it's never more than one chunk of a series, which makes them easier to watch and binge than some of their long-running counterparts.

Following a tragic backstory to his path of vengeance, Guts’ struggle is an admirable one. Berserk is an incredibly violent and gory seinen genre masterpiece, that I can assure is not for the faint of heart.

While I do believe that the sexual violence can be a little excessive to the point where it can be uncomfortable for newcomers, diving into Berserk‘s mature themes reveals why it’s a top manga recommendation, including mine. Every story or narrative needs inspiration that could help its creators in forming a base for the story. Something similar happened with one of the biggest dark fantasy mangas, Berserk. While Berserk offers a plot that was never seen before, there were some things within the series that Kentaro Miura borrowed from other popular manga series.
Mangaka Kentaro Miura’s Berserk | Studio Gaga
In an interview once, Miura confessed that he had used three legendary manga stories for Berserk’s reference, and all three of these have played a different role in designing one of the best dark fantasy narratives of all time. These were some of his favorite works before he entered the industry.
These references and inspirations can be deemed Miura’s way of honoring the works that persuaded him to become a mangaka, and those who have read them can clearly spot the influence in the story.

A certain meme sprung to mind when I awoke to last week’s double-whammy of old-school anime remake news. It’s that panel from a Watchmen comic where Dr. Manhattan sits pensively in isolation on the surface of Mars and is usually made to lament how time is a flat circle, a recent example of which remarked on Ghostbusters and Dune competing at the box office in three separate instances since 1984. Anime is hardly different from other mediums when it comes to rebooting or remaking older material for newer audiences, though it's arguably been slower to dig deeper for inspirations. In the last couple of years, we’ve mostly seen updates of adaptations that originate from the early 2000s or late '90s like Fruits Basket , Trigun , Shaman King , Spice and Wolf , Bartender , Tokyo Mew Mew , Forest of Piano , Orphen and so forth. A few recent exceptions include Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai...

The shonen demographic is famous for its incredibly long anime, featuring episode counts well into the hundreds that keep the series going for years to come. Many of these titles are some of the most iconic anime in history, and many have changed the face of the medium as fans know it. However, as the saying goes, there can be too much of a good thing. While its true fans normally cant get enough of their favorite titles, sometimes a series is better off with only one season.
In most cases, shonen anime benefit from two or more seasons. With their complex storylines and large cast of characters, multiple seasons are usually needed in order to properly wrap things up in a satisfying way. However, sometimes having more than one season turns a great series into something not nearly as good or memorable. Whether its due to needless filler dragging...

Dororo's modern adaptation offers a dark tale blending technology and supernatural forces for a relevant update to the classic. Kaneko's Search and Destroy reimagines Tezuka's story with futuristic cyberpunk elements and replaces demons with sentient robots. The well-crafted storytelling of Dororo remains intact in the update, making the classic even more enticing for today's readers.
While Astro Boy might be Osamu Tezuka's most well-known title, it has risen to prominence again thanks to Netflix's successful anime adaptation of Pluto, a manga by Naoki Urasawa that gave Astro Boy a modern spin. Another Tezuka classic, Dororo, received the same treatment thanks to creator Atsushi Kaneko, and that manga is now finally available to English readers.
In 2018, Kaneko reimagined Tezuka's Dororo in an 18-chapter limited series called Search and Destroy. Now, as revealed in a recent announcement from the comic book and graphic novel publisher Fantagraphics, an English language...

Last November, Netflix released Blue Eye Samurai. The series earned a lot of praise for its stellar writing, characters, and voice acting. It also has a unique animation style that incorporates motion capture. Mizu is the main character, and she is a half-Japanese half-white samurai who wishes to kill the four white men in Japan. One of these men is her biological father. Blue Eye Samurai fans might have to wait a while for season two, but there are a few great anime that they can watch in the meantime.
Many of these anime are perfect for Blue Eye Samurai fans because they also feature skilled samurai. Some of them also have some type of revenge plot. One series in particular stands out because of its powerful female cast. In the end, Blue Eye Samurai fans will like these anime because of their respective characters and action sequences.

Stories about revenge allow audiences to immerse themselves in a perfect world where evildoers are punished. Some anime have morally gray characters that will do anything, including sacrificing their loved ones, to achieve their goals. Many series will show the disastrous consequences of revenge and how it affects those who pursue it.
Tales of revenge will often serve as an emotional outlet for their audience. They give people feelings of control and allow them to fantasize about a perfect world where justice always prevails. Anime, in particular, has introduced some memorable stories about getting revenge. The medium is known for incorporating these themes across various genres.
Throughout history, revenge has been a recurring motif in fiction. It generally follows a character who seeks vengeance against the individual or group responsible for their suffering. While stories differ in context, many come with the message that revenge has dire consequences. Despite this,...

As with stories in any medium, an anime's finale is the biggest thing that can make or break any series. Some anime finales succeed because of how effectively they bring the story and character arcs to a close. Other finales succeed for how well they play into an anime's strengths up to the very end.
When it comes to any show, anime or otherwise, the thing a story absolutely has to land is its final episode. As the last episode, it’s the last chance to close out any and all dangling plot threads, and depending on the execution, a finale can either have a show be forever cemented as a legendary story or completely destroy any semblance of goodwill people still had for it.
It’s very easy for an anime to mess up its finale, and that makes it all the better whenever a series gets it right.

Classroom of the Elite is a one-of-a-kind anime that provides a realistic approach to the high school survival genre, which many shows have tackled previously but haven't been successful enough. For instance, while anime shows like Danganronpa, School-Live!, and Highschool of the Dead take place in a high school, they lack the unique element that the Classroom of the Elite possesses.
Having said that, even though Classroom of the Elite was adapted with the intention of selling its light novels, it was well-received by fans, becoming one of the best survival anime shows. While everyone assumed there wouldn't be a sequel after a phenomenal first season, it returned in 2022, announcing yet another season to keep fans entertained. With that in mind, here's everything we know about Classroom of the Elite season 3.

As much as anime fans enjoy watching historical war anime series, there aren't many decent ones apart from a scant few, including Dororo, Vinland Saga, and Drifters. While many of these anime shows bring historical figures to life by using the events that transpired during Feudal Japan, others, like Kingdom, give us an outlook of how the Warring States period in China influenced the history of the world.
Kingdom is a popular anime series based on a successful manga of the same name. The manga started publication in 2006 and has so far released 69 volumes. Furthermore, an anime series has been airing for more than a decade now, with four seasons totaling 129 episodes.
With the fifth season of Kingdom on the horizon, fans of the anime and manga are eager to see what kind of adventure awaits them. With that in mind, here's everything we know so far about Kingdom season...

Shueisha's Shonen Jump has once again canceled a promising new title, Fabricant 100, to make room for titles it believes may have an even brighter future as a series. Over the next weeks, three new series will make their debut in the magazine as part of the Nextwave initiative, whose authors were all nominees for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Award.
As revealed in Shonen Jump #40, Shueisha's weekly manga anthology that also publishes the latest news and announcements from the manga publisher, Daisuke Enoshima's Fabricant 100 concluded its story with the September 3, 2023, publication of its 36th chapter. Historically, Shonen Jump tends to cancel a title around its 30th Chapter so Fabricant 100 apparently was not able to escape that. On the heels of Fabricant 100's cancelation news, Shonen Jump also announced the upcoming debut of three new titles: Yoshihiko Hayashi's Mama Yuyu, Takeru Hokazono's Kagurabachi, and Elck Itsumo's Two on Ice.

Osamu Tezuka’s manga Dororo originally experienced a short, unlucky run on Weekly Shonen Sunday – canceled prematurely in 1968, the series still managed to live on, presumably thanks to the fame that its author reached by the end of his career. First adapted in 1969, the manga was picked up by Mappa in 2019 for a 24-episode anime series that was mostly acclaimed as one of the best anime of the year – if not of the decade. Two years later, another film rose to success –with the critics, if perhaps not with the public – which had no apparent connection to Tezuka’s early work: Science Saru’s Inu-Oh.
If Tezuka’s Dororo had stayed in the sixties, only a select few might have noticed the striking similarities between the two stories; yet, the success of Mappa’s Dororo brought its protagonists into the spotlight, making it virtually impossible for anime fans to ignore...

Shonen is the biggest and most popular demographic in all of anime, featuring titles from every genre and subgenre available. While most classic shonen series follow a similar format, often emphasizing inspirational stories of friendship, adventure, and self-discovery, modern shonen has gone in a much darker direction.
With the rise of "dark shonen," many new anime tell deeper, more thought-provoking stories. Dark shonen series aren't afraid to push the limits, often touching on graphic, shocking, and even controversial topics. From iconic classics like Attack on Titan and Death Note to new hits, such as Hell's Paradise, dark shonen's success is undeniable, and it plays home to some of the greatest anime series out there.

With the announcement that a new chapter of the classic Black Jack manga by the legendary Osamu Tezuka will be written with the help of a popular generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) program, more fuel has been added to the controversy surrounding AI and the manga industry, which is an extension of the worries caused to creators by the development of AI generative programs.
As reported in the national Japan news daily The Mainichi, Osamu Tezuka's Black Jack will publish a new chapter of the classic manga in commemoration of the series' 50th anniversary in November 2023. However, unlike previous memorial efforts, Black Jack's new chapter will be produced with the support of the generative program ChatGPT-4.

Sometimes, even the best older anime benefit from a little bit of polish, and the best anime remakes can bring new life to these older properties. Whether they are telling the story over again from the beginning or kickstarting a brand-new continuity, they provide a fresh look at some of the classics. If they’re lucky, they might even become the definitive anime adaptation of a manga.
The best remakes and reboots bring something new and fun to the table. This can be anything from a more refined art style and improved animation to a new story, or a continuation of the manga’s as-of-yet unadapted story. Most importantly, it both excites fans of the original and introduces new fans to a property that they may have otherwise overlooked.
Trigun Stampede (2023)
The latest reboot of a classic to hit the small screens, Trigun Stampede started the year off with a bang.

There is a lot to be said about consuming a long-run manga series, spending years following the exploits of your favorite characters, and seeing your collection grow. Many of the titles with the most accolades manage to weave these long expansive stories that make them fan favorites and generate a lot of conversation within the fandom.
However, single-volume manga offers its benefits and the often under-touted format forces its creators to make a strong impact within the confines of a short narrative story. Personally, these shorter series make up some of my all-time favorite reads as well as act as perfect starting points to recommend to others who are interested in the medium but are unwilling to commit to dozens of volumes. Furthermore, these titles are ideal for revisits, casual re-reads on a nice day outside, or lounging at home.
In no particular order, here are 12 outstanding single-volume manga releases...

Welcome to a new edition of Pop Culture Imports for the month of October! Now granted, this month's column may not be quite as spooky themed as past October editions, but you could argue that it does give us a taste of different kinds of horror — from the erotic horrors of "Thirst" and "La Piscine," to the horrors of war in "All Quiet on the Western Front," to the horrors of having a chainsaw for a head. Don't say I don't give you variety.
Let's fire up those subtitles and get streaming.

Arguably one of the best shows on television right now, Killing Eve‘s third season deserves a lot more praise than it got.
“Superb, stylish, and tragically beautiful are just a few words to describe Killing Eve as a whole, though the third season of this BBC hit, in particular, was especially brilliant, despite what the many negative reviews written by cis male critics say. Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Fiona Shaw, Kim Bodnia, and the rest of the cast delivered stellar performances, as usual, but it wasn’t simply the performances that tied the season together—it was also the character development throughout.”

Creed Bratton weighs in on whether or not his character of the same name on The Office could be the Scranton Strangler.

Beginning 2000s, director Akihiko Shiota emerged as part of a new wave of Japanese filmmakers portraying teenage alienation in postmodern Japan. Like many other famous directors of his generation, Shiota was a student of Shigehiko Hasumi at Tokyo Film School. Though less prolific than his former classmates Shinji Aoyama (“Eureka” 2000) and Kiyoshi Kurosawa (“Cure” 1997), Shiota produced impressive movies such as “Moonlight Whispers” (1999), “Harmful Insect” (2001) and “Canary” (2004), which all deal with young outcasts and a lack of parental presence. In the course of his career, Shiota shifted his focus from serious indie dramas to sentimental commercial productions and effect-filled entertainment (“Dororo” 2007). He finally ended up in the genre of medical drama with the TBS tearjerker “I Just Wanna Hug You” (2014). What may look like a decline of artistic demand, is proven wrong by Shiota’s newest film “Farewell Song” (2019).
“Farewell Song” was screened on Japannual Film Festival in Vienna.

Kensuke Sonomura is a household name in the Asian Action cinema. Starring as a stunt double and action director in many movies across the continent, Sonomura is ready to enter the stage with his own feature film. His debut film “Hydra” screened at the Japan Filmfest Hamburg and we had the pleasure to get an interview with him.
Before producing your own movies, you were an action choreographer. Can you tell us more about your background as a choreographer and the kind of work that comes with it? And how was the collaboration with John Woo and Mamoru Oshii?
