“Horror in the 90s sucked!” It’s a phrase we have all heard. We may have even uttered it. While the 70s was a time for grimy experimentation that set the standards for decades to come, and the 80s were the heyday of franchise slashers, the 90s represented something completely different for horror fans. The slasher giants like Halloween and Friday the 13th were petering out and no new horror icons had risen to take their places. In the last few years of the decade, the slasher re-emerged via Scream and gave rise to the more clever, self-referencial horror cycle that carried us into the new millennium, but what about the years before that? Was horror truly the barren wasteland that so often gets moaned about?
No! No, it was not.

In 2019, what started as a crowdfunded project became a fully realized film when In Search of Darkness, directed by David Weiner, was released. It was another in a long line of documentaries that gather horror's biggest names to talk about the history of the genre in TV and cinema. Where In Search of Darkness set itself apart in such a familiar formula was how in depth it went. That first film was a whopping 264 minutes long, and became a favorite for hardcore horror fans. This led to In Search of Darkness: Part II in 2020, which focused more on the practical effects of the '80s, and 2022's In Search of Darkness: Part III, a celebration of straight-to-video horror.

“The Last Video Store,” a self-referential horror movie that debuted at Austin’s Fantastic Fest back in 2023, is finally headed to physical media. And we’ve got the exclusive trailer, which you can watch below. The Blu-ray is out on December 10 from Arrow Video.
Directed by Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford and written by Rutherford and Joshua Roach, the movie is described as a “love letter to video rental stores and the B-movie treasures that lined their walls.” The movie follows a young woman who, after her father passes, who brings his collection of VHS tapes to Blaster Video. Blaster Video is a throwback of a video store, run by Kevin, a friend of her father’s. Among the tapes is a dark and mysterious tape – could it have been the last thing that her father watched? Of course, it unleashes a bunch of monsters into the video store, which...

Over the course of three In Search of Darkness documentary films, all of which were over four hours long (with one of them nearly reaching the six hour mark), director David Weiner did an incredible job of digging into the many great (and some not-so-great) horror movies that were released in the 1980s. There were still so many movies left uncovered that Weiner could circle back and continue looking into ’80s movies for years to come – but instead, he has decided to move forward into the ’90s with the upcoming documentary In Search of Darkness: 1990 – 1994. At the time, fans considered the horror genre to be in a lull, a downswing from the heights it reached in the ’80s. But with this movie, Weiner aims to point out that we did still get a lot of good horror movies during that time period. You can get a sample of the...

Nancy Thompson is one of the great final girls in slasher history, overcoming Freddy Krueger while her friends ended up with knives through the chest and being tossed around bedroom walls. With just A Nightmare on Elm Street, portrayer Heather Langenkamp began getting call after call offering her other horror roles, but all of those were nothing more than, as she put it, a “Taco Bell burrito” – and she means that in a bad way!
Appearing on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast (via MovieWeb), Heather Langenkamp said her love for her trademark character actually helped keep her away from the spotlight, despite the success of A Nightmare on Elm Street. “Like there’s never as good a part as Nancy. It would just be hard to do that. It’d be like, you know, having this great meal with everything there, and then you go and have a Taco Bell burrito.

’80s Sci-Fi Doc ‘In Search of Tomorrow’ Explores How Theater Lobbies Were the Original Hype Machines
Click here to read the full article.
A week ago, genre fans descended upon San Diego Comic-Con to catch glimpses of films from Marvel and DC. Even those who didn’t attend were treated to trailers released online, instantly available in this glutenous age of fandom when publications — including this one — cover the ins and outs of sci-fi, superhero and horror films.
But back in the 1980s, audiences had to be patient. They had to wait, having nothing more than a movie poster to whet their appetites. Title. Tagline. Image. That was it, until the trailer eventually arrived (also in theaters).
The new documentary In Search of Darkness dives into the biggest ’80s sci-fi movies, and along the way it explores the way the theater lobby helped build anticipation for films such as The Wrath of Khan, Blade Runner and more.

"That was extraordinary filmmaking, man." This documentary is finally releasing soon! Check it out. We've been posting a new trailer every year over the last few years for this 80s nostalgia documentary In Search of Tomorrow, and it's finally out in April. Journalist / filmmaker David A. Weiner's follow-up to his doc about 80s horror In Search of Darkness, this focuses on the treasure trove of science fiction films made in the 80s. "A five-hour-long retrospective of '80s sci-fi movies featuring interviews with actors, directors, writers, SFX experts, and composers." This epic, four minute new trailer features a sampling of interviews spliced with footage from all of your 80s favorites including Star Trek, The Last Starfighter, Bill & Ted, Flight of the Navigator, Tron, Bttf, Weird Science, Starman, Innerspace, and many others. I hope this will be worth the wait! As long as the interviews are good, it should be worthwhile.

Shudder is pulling out all the shivery stops to commemorate the startling fact that we are exactly halfway to the most beloved date on any horror fan’s calendar, Halloween. Yes, that’s right, this month (April) is the six-month mark and the world’s scariest streaming outlet is celebrating with “Halfway to Halloween,” a massive slate of programming that begins on April 1 and continues throughout the rest of the month.
This is no April Fool’s joke (although we have some if you want). Shudder is rolling out a brand new batch of exclusive and/or original programming, including the second season of its acclaimed Creepshow series, the premiere of a new series of original short films called Deadhouse Dark, the highly anticipated sequel to its In Search of Darkness documentary, the return of The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs, and the 2021 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.

A hell of a ride from start to finish, horror fans will still be left wanting more when the credits roll, as was the case with the original movie.
Several new horror stars appear in In Search of Darkness: Part II with the sequel bringing in a slew of top names like Robert Englund, Tom Savini, Nancy Allen, Linnea Quigley, and Clancy Brown. The sequel is as essential to the tradition of horror as shocking gore and a monster you love to fear. Where would we be without the certainty that the killer will pop back up for one final scare? As the definitive work on the horror genre, it only makes sense that In Search of Darkness: Part II would return with a vengeance and what a thrill it is.
You’d think that four hours of content in the first In Search of Darkness would sufficiently cover horror, but director David Weiner would beg to differ. In an equally massive expansion and continuation of the first film, Part II chronologically explores ’80s horror through a documentary funhouse of movements and interests that influenced the greats of the genre. Horror is in a class all its own, as we adoring fans know so well. Horror creates a film experience that can’t be replicated in any other space. Horror sits on the razor’s edge of innovation, making note of the line of decency before dancing across it. Politically, culturally, and in its very construction, horror is a bold and brassy corner of the film world. In Search of Darkness offers one of the most comprehensive journeys into every lovely facet of the genre, with over four hours of history and commentary to get swept up in!
In Search of Darkness chronologically investigates the best of the horror genre, from major theatrical releases to straight-to-video treasures, through its Golden Age, the 1980s. If it’s a subject that horror touches, it’s lovingly turned over and explored with all the care of an art historian and the fervor of the ultimate fan.

Paranormal Activity is a tiny movie that had a huge impact on the entertainment industry. Not only did it become one of the most profitable films in Hollywood history after making almost $200 million on a $350,000 budget and help popularize the found footage genre, but it was a major early success for Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions. They’ve since gone on to shape the world of modern horror cinema, the highlight of all this being the incredible Get Out.
Despite that success, though, the franchise has been dormant since 2015’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. Last year, however, we began to hear that a new entry in the series was being developed and now, Blum has been opening up about it a bit and said he’d love to bring back series star Katie Featherston for the pic.
