ViacomCBS’ MTV Entertainment Group is committing $250 million over the next three years to fuel the growth of content led and produced by Bipoc and women-owned and operated production companies.

According to a press release, as part of this newly formed studio, MTV Entertainment — whose portfolio includes MTV and VH1 — will provide funding, production infrastructure, services and staff to foster new creative, formats and ideas that will fuel the unscripted content needs of today and tomorrow.

Unscripted executive producers Lashan Browning and Adam Gonzalez were brought in last year to pilot the group’s initiative. They have already been producing and creating unscripted content and will form their own respective third-party production ventures with an equity investment made by MTV Entertainment.

Gonzalez is known for his work as showrunner of VH1’s “Teyana & Iman,” “America’s Next Top Model,” and “Mob Wives.”

ViacomCBS is cutting ties with Big Fish Entertainment, the MGM-owned shingle behind A&e’s recently canceled “Live Pd.” A&e is not a ViacomCBS network, but ViacomCBS did run shows from Big Fish including VH1’s “Cartel Crew,” “Black Ink Crew,” “Black Ink Crew: Chicago,” “Love & Hip Hop Miami,” “Love & Hip Hop: New York” and “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta.” Big Fish had only recently become a producer on the “Love & Hip Hop” franchise.

Most recently, Big Fish produced the Covid-19-related special “Club MTV Presents #DanceTogether with D-Nice” for MTV.

“We have decided to end our relationship with Big Fish Entertainment and will be producing our shows in house at this time,” a ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group spokesperson said in a statement. “We thank Big Fish for their past contributions and wish them the best.”

MTV Studios has signed executive producers Lashan Browning, Adam Gonzalez and Tiffany Lea Williams to overall deals, in a move by the studio to bring highly-skilled creative entrepreneurs in house.

The three seasoned executive producers are part of an initiative to incubate and invest in independent production ventures, enabling them to grow their brands while building long-term dynamic content partnerships with MTV Studios, the studio says.

“Lashan, Adam, and Tiffany are three proven hit-makers who know inside and out what our audience wants,” said Nina L. Diaz, President of Entertainment for Viacom’s Music Group. “Collectively, they share a talent for finding authentic voices and sparking cultural moments that resonate. We are excited to help bring their creative vision to life and see what their storytelling powers yield.

MTV Studios has set overall deals with three top producers of unscripted series for VH1 and MTV.

The pacts with Lashan Browning, Adam Gonzalez and Tiffany Lea Williams reflect Viacom’s push into original content production across its brands. MTV Studios aims to help spur the growth of new independent production banners by offering overhead and infrastructure support in exchange for an early line on projects they develop.

“The Hills” returned to MTV with a new revival on Monday, marking the second most-watched cable series premiere among young adults of 2019.

With a 0.70 rating among adults 18-34, according to Nielsen’s live-plus-same-day metric, “The Hills: New Beginnings” is only topped by MTV’s “Double Shot at Love with DJ Pauly D and Vinny.” MTV sister network VH1’s “Cartel Crew” currently holds the number three spot.

The long-awaited revival was heavily promoted on the network, including at the MTV Movie & TV Awards last week and the Video Music Awards last fall, and will likely see a lift in delayed viewing.

“Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club” popped open its umbrellas on the beaches of MTV Tuesday night as one of the top five new cable shows of the 2018-19 season to-date among young adults, TheWrap has learned exclusively.

The actress and entrepreneur’s new hour-long docuseries — which follows Lohan as she attempts to build an empire with her new club, Lohan Beach House, in Mykonos, Greece — came in at 8 p.m. with a 0.39 rating in the 18-34 demographic, according to Nielsen’s “Live + Same Day” data.

That puts the start of “Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club” at No. 5 on the list of top five new cable show debuts of the season (October 2018 – present), among that specific demo, behind VH1’s “T.I. & Tiny: Family Hustle” (0.92),”Remy & Papoose” (0.69) and “Cartel Crew” (0.65) and MTV series “How Far Is Tattoo Far” (0.59), in that order.
