It was selected as the Slovak entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards®, but it was not nominated. It is a co-production between Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland and Germany.
One of the reasons why Peter Bebjak wanted to make the film was because he felt that the world is almost turning back to the same hard line opinions that helped the Nazis in their rise to power. Tellingly, over the end credits, soundbites play of authoritarians in power - including Donald Trump - espousing the same kind of hatred that led to the death camps in the 1930s.
The closing close-up as the two escapees relate the full horror of Auschwitz to the Red Cross officer played by John Hannah takes 13 minutes.
