The humor in all three of the storylines revolves around a character being pushed to their breaking point. Luckily, the actors understand the assignment and are able to bring the laughs without making every situation feel like the end of the proverbial world. This is an example of taking heightened comedy situations and knowing just how far they can be pushed.

Shudder has acquired Push, the new film written and directed by David Charbonier and Justin Powell. The horror streaming platform previously acquired Charbonier’s and Powell’s thriller The Boy Behind the Door in 2021.

The two creators, who have been friends since childhood, were interviewed by 1428 Elm after The Boy Behind the Door came to Shudder. During the interview, we talked about that film and their other horror/thriller The Djinn, which premiered around the same time.

Both of their previous films placed focus on kids, and both starred Ezra Dewey. David Charbonier and Justin Powell (The Boy Behind the Door, The Djinn) are back with upcoming horror movie Push, and the film has found a home at Shudder this week.

The highly anticipated horror movie, which made its world premiere at the 2024 Sitges Film Festival and will make its U.S. premiere at Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California this weekend, will make its exclusive streaming debut on Shudder later this year.

Alicia Sanz (El Cid) and Raúl Castillo (Smile 2) lead the cast.

The film follows Natalie Flores (Sanz), a pregnant realtor who is attacked by a sadistic killer (Castillo) at her open house, sending her into premature labor. Up against a physiological ticking clock, Natalie must find a way to escape before she gives birth.

“With Push, David and Justin continue to hone their spectacular skill for intimate, visceral suspense,” said Sam Zimmerman, Head of Programming for Shudder.

Kiernan Shipka and Mckenna Grace are teaming up for The Nowhere Game, a high-stakes survival thriller produced by Erik Feig’s Picturestart. Shipka, fresh off The Last Showgirl, and Grace, set to appear in the next Scream film, will take on roles that push them to the limit.

If you’ve ever purchased a house, you’ll know how the promotional photographs work. They’re carefully framed, lit and lensed – with varying degrees of skill – to give the impression that everything is bigger and higher quality. UTA Independent Film Group has boarded U.S. sales for horror-thriller “Push.” The film, which stars Alicia Sanz and Raúl Castillo, will have its world premiere at the Sitges Film Festival.

Sanz’s credits include “Simulant” and “El Cid.” Castillo’s credits include “The Inspection” and “Army of the Dead.”

“Push” is written, directed and produced by David Charbonier and Justin Powell.

The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. Although The Djinn beat it to release in the US by a few months, The Boy Behind the Door is writer/director David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s first feature. Unlike that film, this has a plot rooted in the all too real horrors of child abductions and human trafficking. And it’s all the more shocking and disturbing for it.

The film opens with Bobby and Kevin (Ezra Dewey; The Djinn) in the trunk of a car. A brief flashback shows their violent abduction from a park. Back in the present Kevin is taken from the trunk by the unseen and unnamed Creep. Left alone Bobby manages to escape the car’s trunk, only to find himself in the middle of nowhere.

Before he can make an escape he hears Kevin screaming inside the house.

Welp, 2021 was certainly a year. There was a lot of good (Movies! TV! Books! Random Horror Awesomeness!) and a lot of bad (pretty much everything else), but we made it to 2022, and I am excited for all that’s to come in the next 12 months (at least when it comes to stuff going on in horror). David Charbonier and Justin Powell’s debut The Boy Behind the Door was a well-executed abduction horror scored through with both tenderness and an uncommon cruel streak. Their follow-up, The Djinn, stars one of that film’s lead actors, Ezra Dewey, and locks him once again into the same kids-in-confinement genre. Despite light 80s stylings on the soundtrack, this is unfortunately a much weaker effort that both lacks internal logic and struggles for inspiration.

Though the country might be inching towards normalcy, the specialty box office has yet to make steps towards a total recovery. This weekend we failed to see a single film break a 100K gross.

Opening at 41 screens this week was IFC Midnight horror flick The Djinn. Co-directed by David Charbonier and Justin Powell, the film follows a mute twelve-year-old, Dylan Jacobs, as he discovers a mysterious book of spells inside his new apartment. Grieving the loss of his mother, and feeling isolated from everyone except for his father, Dylan performs a ritual that promises to deliver his heart’s desire: to have a voice.

Garnering an 88% on Rt, Djinn’s premiere saw a promising $1004 per screen average and brought home over 40 grand. Few films have been able to break this mark in the limited-release space during the pandemic.

Neon debuted marriage drama The Killing of Two Lovers this week.

Five new films, including “Spiral” (Lionsgate) from the lucrative “Saw” franchise, opened wide (at least 600 theaters) stateside. That is by far the biggest studio commitment to any week in a long time, with three at one time usually the most, and four rare.

Mid-May is normally prime for movie releases. This year, it’s Memorial Day when more prime titles will open. Optimism remains for then, but for now it’s treading water time. The expected much bigger “A Quiet Place Part II” (Paramount) along with “Cruella” (Disney) on May 28 will be a much better test of how close theaters are to providing grosses commensurate with their potential.

But a Top 10 of $24 million, with an overall take of perhaps $26 million, remains anemic considering the increased number of fresh films, combined with more theaters plus a general greater sense of safety in theaters. That sense is led above all by how “Spiral” did.

The summer movie season continues on its road to recovery and normalcy, with four new wide releases hitting screens. Still, studios are holding back their big guns for now, as roughly one-third of theaters remain closed and capacity restrictions remain in place at many locations. The past few months have shown promising box office results from films such as Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat, and Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, but it may still take some time before the box office returns to its former glory, with the major test coming over Memorial Day weekend when Cruella and A Quiet Place Part II face off.

Woe betide the grade-school-age lad who finds himself in a movie by writing-directing duo David Charbonier and Justin Powell: He may survive their plotlines, but it won’t be pretty. Their official first feature, “The Boy Behind the Door” (which will debut on streaming platform Shudder July 29) found two such kids fighting for their lives after being abducted by a stranger. In the new, more supernaturally tilted “The Djinn,” they’ve crafted another effective suspense exercise from the same basic premise, trapping a juvenile protagonist in a home with a malevolent nemesis.

A mute boy is trapped in his apartment with a sinister monster when he makes a wish to fulfill his heart's greatest desire. That is a simple setup, but this looks insanely creepy overall.
