Ridley Scott's classic sci-fi actioner Blade Runnercreated a futuristic dystopia in which humans and replicants (a.k.a. synthetic humanoids) fight for their personhood — a world and moral question that's endured for decades. Since its 1982 debut, a growing fanbase has watched the original movie spawn an ever-expanding franchise. Filmmakers have made several spin-off shorts, Blade Runner Black Out 2022, 2036: Nexus Dawn, and 2048: Nowhere to Run, that further lay out the universe's lore. They also made the offshoot animated series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, as well as started developing an upcoming limited series on Prime Video called Blade Runner 2099. However, its biggest sequel installment in the saga so far is the film, Blade Runner 2049.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim has the distinction of being the first Middle-earth-set anime, but it's also the franchise's biggest box office flop. However, in a surprise reversal of its box office misfortune, the film is enjoying major success via streaming.
Despite The Lord of the Rings trilogy's Peter Jackson producing, Kenji Kamiyama directing, and an intriguing untold story-style premise about Helm Hammerhand and his daughter Héra defending what would become Helm's Deep, War of the Rohirrim's buzz didn't convert into ticket sales. The anime experiment earned $4.6 million at the box office -- an objective disappointment, considering its wide release and $30 million budget. However, recent streaming data shows War of the Rohirrim ranking among the top positions across various international markets since its debut on streaming platform Max.

Sound the horns because The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is coming home on streaming. Amazon’s TV series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has already learned that it can be risky to delve into the world created by J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic fantasy novels and put on screen in Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning film trilogy. In fact, Jackson himself learned that when he followed his “Lord of the Rings” films with the three overstuffed and significantly less appreciated “Hobbit” movies.
But now the makers of the animated film “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” are taking on an even more daunting challenge: They’re not only building a story only glancingly mentioned in Tolkien’s legendarium, but they’re doing so using the medium of anime, a distinctly different form from the CG-heavy live-action world that Jackson created.
For director Kenji Kamiyama, however, the different medium was an advantage. “Hand-drawn pictures give the audience room for imagination,...

Well, that was fast. New Line Cinema’s anime feature The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which opened on Dec. 13 to a very low $4.5M, will be available on digital in home on Dec. 27, repping a 14-day theatrical window.

Note, just because the movie is available in home, doesn’t mean it won’t continue to play in theaters. How do you make a good animated movie? You have to start with the right animators and creatives; Kenji Kamiyama is that guy. The director of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim has not only a history of animation going back to the 80s, but has worked on notable projects like Akira and Kiki's Delivery Service. His most recent projects before his foray into Middle-earth includes a stand-alone episode in Star Wars Visions and Blade Runner: Black Lotus. But, Kamiyama traded in replicants and lightsabers for horses and giant eagles in War of the Rohirrim. One of the best parts of the film is its animation and you can tell that Kamiyama's influences go far deeper than just the Peter Jackson films.

One would be forgiven for not noticing, but a new movie in one of the most successful franchises in cinema history arrived in theaters over the weekend. The movie in question is "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim," an animated rendition of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien that takes place long before the events of director Peter Jackson's original trilogy. Unfortunately, audiences largely seemed uninterested in this supplemental tale, given its lousy box office haul. That said, Warner Bros. probably isn't all that bothered by it, as this was a decision made with bigger business in mind.

The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim has debuted to $4.6 million at the box office, according to a recent report by Variety. However, it was revealed that the film’s performance in the box office was not Warner Bros.’ primary focus.
The anime film, which was produced on a $30 million budget, was developed and rushed into production primarily to safeguard New Line Cinema’s rights to adapt J. R. R. Tolkien’s works.
The studio has held these rights through a licensing agreement with Zaentz Co. since the late 1990s. Though the specific terms of the contract are not public, it is believed that Warner Bros. is required to maintain active development and production of Tolkien-related projects to retain the rights.
In early 2022, Zaentz Co., which controls a portfolio of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit rights, reportedly began exploring a sale of its Tolkien holdings.

The studio has held these rights through a licensing agreement with Zaentz Co. since the late 1990s. Though the specific terms of the contract are not public, it is believed that Warner Bros. is required to maintain active development and production of Tolkien-related projects to retain the rights.

Paper-thin characters and a derivative plot make this Lord Of The Rings anime into a flashy legal exercise. Here’s our The War Of The Rohirrim review.
A film which exists to settle Warner Bros’ Lord Of The Rings development obligations, War Of The Rohirrim – an anime-inspired epic set 183 years before Peter Jackson’s trilogy –is a 134-minute accounting exercise. That isn’t necessarily a problem; in a year when 14 of the top 15 highest-grossing movies worldwide are sequels of one form or another, sometimes we just have to take the blockbusters we’re given.
Sometimes, however, the business case for a film so obviously outweighs its artistic merit it proves too distracting to ignore. As Blade Runner: Black Lotus director Kenji Kamiyama’s adaptation of another J R R Tolkien appendices settles in to reproduce its fourth or fifth plot point from The Two Towers, it’s hard not to...

The Riders of Rohan are set to gallop back into the spotlight in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim, marking the groundbreaking combination of Middle-earth with Japanese anime. Directed by renowned animator Kenji Kamiyama, this prequel explores Helm Hammerhand's epic saga, set 183 years before the iconic trilogy. With the anime style breathing new life into Tolkien's world, this film promises an exciting new perspective on the battle-worn kingdom of Rohan.
Kamiyama, celebrated for his work on projects like Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Blade Runner: Black Lotus, was given a huge responsibility of reimagining Middle-earth's landscapes and epic battles in anime form. The film merges the iconic visuals from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films and an anime art style, giving fans of both genres a beautifully animated and emotional story.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is an original anime which arrives in theaters this weekend. In the movie, we'll return to Middle-earth for a story revealing the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan.
As with any sort set in the iconic world previously brought to life in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (based on the revered books by J.R.R. Tolkien), expectations are high.
Those have been raised thanks to Peter Jackson's return as producer; Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus) is in the director's chair and the movie has generated a lot of excitement among fans of Middle-earth since first being announced.
However, as we first reported on SFFGazette.com, while the first wave of reviews may be described best as "mid," longtime fans of this world are likely to find something to love.
As usual, we'll start with the trades.

The familiar presence, or at least voice, of Miranda Otto provides a reassuring connective tissue between the Lord of the Rings films and a new animated prequel: Her Éowyn, previously seen in Peter Jackson’s juggernaut live-action trilogy, narrates The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, set in her homeland of Rohan some 183 years earlier. Serving both as insurance against New Line losing the screen rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels and as an appetizer to the upcoming live-action Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (scheduled for 2026), the distinctly anime-style feature should prove equally appealing to both diehard fans and newcomers.

Long before Peter Jackson took a swing at “The Lord of the Rings,” audiences got a glimpse into the fantasy realm of J.R.R. Tolkien via a trio of late-’70s animated projects: two animated TV specials produced by Rankin/Bass (of which “The Hobbit” remains fairly well liked) and a dark and ominous big-screen feature from Ralph Bakshi (director of sci-fi psych-out “Wizards”). So there’s not just precedent, but a certain kind of poetry to Jackson and screenwriter Philippa Boyens commissioning an intense, hand-drawn extension to the existing mythology, like the one represented by “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.”
When I say “poetry,” I suppose I’m referring to the kind you might find at your local Renaissance festival, accompanied by pipe music and a handful of costumed eccentrics doing a jig. The real selling point of “The War of the Rohirrim” is not that it’s animated,...

Amazon’s Prime Video since 2022 has been doing its own attempt to capture the magic of J.R.R. Tolkien’s wildly popular Lord of the Rings universe with The Rings of Power, setting it apart from Peter Jackson’s Lotr and Hobbit trilogies, but still suggesting it is a distant cousin of those films. Now, however, Jackson himself is behind another incarnation, the animated The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, joined by his key Lotr contributors Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens — all won a boatload of Oscars and film immortality in the early part of this century with the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films, each nominated for Best Picture, and finally sweeping it all in 2003 with 11 Academy Awards for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. This was followed by the Hobbit trilogy.

An uneven, rollercoaster of a year at the box office is slowly coming to a close. Things couldn't have started worse for theaters in 2024 in the aftermath of last year's dual Hollywood strikes. The release slate through May was downright abysmal and things looked bad. Fortunately, monster hits like "Wicked" and "Moana 2" have helped ensure that we'll finish the year strong. So, can a new Marvel movie and a new adventure in Middle-earth help the cause as well? That's a complicated question but, all the same, "Kraven the Hunter" and "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" will both hit screens on the same day next weekend.
Sony's latest "Spider-Man" spin-off, "Kraven the Hunter" is currently looking at a debut in the $16 to $24 million range. Similarly, Warner Bros.' animated "Lord of the Rings" prequel is expected to bring in between $15 and $24 million on opening weekend,...

New anime film The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim contains many settings introduced in the original Lord of the Rings live-action film trilogy by Peter Jackson. Following Rohirrim's world premiere at London's Odeon Luxe Leicester Square, executive producer Peter Jackson claimed that it includes "essential lore" about Helm's Deep -- a particular Middle-earth region that is dear to countless Tolkien fans.
Per Oricon, War of the Rohirrim had its first public screening on Dec. 3. Jackson himself was in attendance alongside director Kenji Kamiyama and major Lotr stars such as Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Billy Boyd (Pippin). Not long after the credits rolled, Peter Jackson warmly praised Kamiyama's handling of the film's story, which centers on the violent conflict between the Kingdom of Rohan and a brutal Dunlending lord known as Wulf (Luke Pasqualino). The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is the first big-screen project to come back to theaters in over a decade, and an extended look at the animated film — from New Line Cinema, and directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Blade Runner: Black Lotus and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) — which was first revealed to fans at New York Comic Con 2024 has now been shared online by IGN. The footage features a look at Helm Hammerhand, the imperious king of Rohan, and the man for whom Helm's Deep is named. Hammerhand is voiced by Brian Cox (Succession) and there's a sense of foreboding and imminent danger in his words during our preview. The film takes place almost two centuries before the events of the Peter Jackson original trilogy of movies, while the official synopsis sheds more light on matters:...

Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy team is back with a new animated feature this month, with producer Philippa Boyens stating that the new The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim anime film was a test to see if they were ready to go back to Middle-earth.
The War of the Rohirrim is set to be released in theaters on Dec. 13, and Boyens, along with Lord of the Rings’ Fran Walsh and Jackson, are among the film’s producers. The movie tells the tale of Helm Hammerhand, voiced by Brian Cox (Succession), who is referenced in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers at the Battle of Helm’s Deep. Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is one of the year's most anticipated movies. It's the first cinematic return to the world of Middle-earth since the release of The Battle of the Five Armies almost ten years ago, and the first movie in the franchise to be animated. For the most part, the story stands by itself. It takes place about two hundred years before the start of Lord of the Rings, and therefore, features no (major) returning characters and exists pretty much in its way.
However, the film would be more meaningful when considered in conjunction with the events of one entry into the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Because it features the Battle of Helm's Deep and highlights the importance of the Riders of Rohan, The War of the Rohirrim will make The Two Towers infinitely more meaningful in the long run.
