Banijay Rights has scored a first batch of sales on “Fallen,” a crime drama reuniting “The Bridge” showrunner Camilla Ahlgren and star Sofia Helini. The series is produced by Banijay-owned Filmlance, a leading Scandinavian outfit.
Unveiled at the Goteborg Film Festival’s TV Drama Vision conference, deals on “Fallen” include Canal+’s channel Polar+ in France, MHz Choice in the U.S., Npo in the Netherlands, Sbs in Australia, Ert in Greece and Syn Hf in Iceland.

World War II movies have always been a great source of entertainment for viewers, whether it's Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk, which tells the story of soldiers attempting to flee before enemy troops arrive, or Brad Pitt's Fury, in which a five-man crew takes on the entire army to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany. Despite having similar concepts, most of these films deserve the attention they receive. Perhaps something new will be found in the forthcoming Netflix World War II film Blood & Gold.

Swedish star Sofia Helin (“The Bridge”) has signed a multi-year first look deal with Scandinavian production company Nordic Drama Queens to exclusively co-develop a slate of film and TV projects.

Moving waves on Spain’s film-tv scene when it launched in early May, Beta Fiction Spain has unveiled its first project as a producer, “Dolores,” a portrait of Spain’s Dolores Ibarruri, a worldwide icon of the workers’ movement and struggle against fascism.
The feature film is inspired by “Pasionaria. La vida inesperada de Dolores Ibárruri,” a question-posing non-fiction book by Spanish historian Diego Díaz Alonso published in 2020.

Beta Film has acquired world sales rights to “Estonia,” an ambitious Finnish series telling the true story of Europe’s deadliest maritime disaster of the 20th century. The eight-part event drama will reteam “Bordertown” creator Miikko Oikkonen and helmer Juuso Syrjä (Bordertown), who will split directing duties with Måns Månsson (“Snabba Cash”).
Finland’s biggest drama project to date, “Estonia” is produced by Beta Nordic Studio’s Finnish banner Fisher King, and co-produced by Swedish Kärnfilm Ab, Panache Production Belgium and the Estonian Amrion Oü. Also co-producing are streaming service C More Finland and Sweden, along with the broadcaster TV4 and MTV Finland, in collaboration with Beta Film.
The character-driven series, whose shoot is due to start in the spring, will captures the true event of the sinking of the Ms Estonia, the country’s largest ship, in September 1994. The cruise ferry was hit by a major storm, which led to uncontrolled tilting.

The six-part series is based on Ingrid Carlberg‘s August Prize-winning biography “Raoul Wallenberg: The Biography.” Jesper Harrie (“Bonus Family”), Måns Herngren and Carl-Johan Vallgren co-created and penned “Raoul.” The period drama will start shooting next year with Herngren directing. Beta Film is handling international sales on the historical series.
Wallenberg was born into the powerful Swedish Wallenberg family but was never included in the family’s business empire. Perceived as a carefree and socially gifted man, he showed tremendous courage and compassion in 1944, when he was given the rescue mission to protect Jewish people in Nazi-occupied Hungary. Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, Golden Globe winner Kyle MacLachlan and Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. are joining Jon Hamm in the Miramax movie Confess, Fletch, directed by Greg Mottola. Principal photography is set to start Monday, June 28.
The film is based on the original Gregory Mcdonald’s 1970s mystery novel series, and will stay true to the second novel Confess, Fletch. The story will follow Fletch, who finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation, one in which he is pinned as the prime suspect. Jan Mojto’s Munich-based production-distribution company Beta Film has boarded Nordic suspense thriller “Helsinki Syndrome,” the first common project with Finland’s Fisher King since Beta took a majority stake in the leading Finnish production company in 2019.
Coinciding with the Fisher King deal, Beta launched the Sweden-based Beta Nordic Studios (Bns), a umbrella hub grouping its production interests in the Nordic region.
Bns aims to leverage Beta Film’s international expertise and distribution muscle to deliver high-end local content with global potential from its members.
Minimum guarantees that Beta Film puts up against future distribution revenues also allow producers to make series at the budgetary level of their artistic ambitions rather than that of local financing available, helping the shows to become standout titles from their territory.

Beta Nordic Studios, the umbrella for Beta’s production activities in Scandinavia, has acquired a majority stake in Cinenord, a leading Norwegian production banner specializing in high-end series.
Founded in 2004, the company is led by Silje Hopland-Eik and Alexander Eik, the producer-director duo behind the popular Scandi series “Atlantic Crossing” and “Wisting,” as well as the family franchise “Casper and Emma.”
Cinenord’s pipeline of high-profile scripted projects include “Bergman,” a series about the Swedish icon Ingmar Bergman that Alexander Eik is writing and will direct. “Alexander has been working on ‘Bergman’ for nine years and wants to create a fresh, fun and colorful show about the man behind the artist,” said Hopland-Eik.

According to Susanne Simpson, executive producer of the long-running PBS staple “Masterpiece Theatre,” this year’s slate of miniseries might look different than in years past because of the global pandemic. At PBS’s Winter TCA Press Tour on Thursday, she said there were five delayed productions due to Covid, and that compelled Simpson to look farther afield for new project to air.
“I don’t think anybody knew how long lockdowns were going to happen,” Simpson said. “Atlantic Crossing” was something she’d known about for six months prior to the outbreak, but she’d never pursued it because it was a Norwegian production. “Once I was able to see the show it wasn’t a very hard decision,” she said. “Atlantic Crossing” tells the story of the relationship between Crown Princess Marta (Sofia Helin) of Sweden and Norway and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Kyle MacLachlan).

Public broadcaster PBS is looking to get involved in British dramas at an earlier stage to deal with the increasing competition from the streamers.

Dutch actresses Halina Reijn and Carice van Houten’s new drama Red Light and UK supernatural comedy horror tale Truth Seekers are among 10 upcoming series due to compete in the third edition of Canneseries which is taking place as a hybrid event from October 9 to 14.
The annual television festival was originally set to run last April alongside Miptv until the content market cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The festival was rescheduled for October to run alongside MIPCOM instead, which has since moved online due to ongoing health concerns around the virus.

A trio of well-respected Scandinavian producers heading from Cinenord are joining forces to set up Nevis Productions, a banner dedicated to high-end Nordic and English-language series. The London-based independent producer Nevision is financially backing the new company.
Set up by Anni Faurbye Fernandez, Moa Westeson and Cindy Hanson, Nevis Productions will have offices in Stockholm and Copenhagen.
All three producers have a strong track record in scripted drama production. Fernandez’s credits include Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” Trilogy, David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” “Wallander” (the Swedish and British version starring Kenneth Branagh), “Occupied,” “Wisting” and “Atlantic Crossing.” Fernandez previously worked as CEO at Yellow Bird, as well as Good Company Films and the banner Cinenord.

When the film and TV industry emerges from self-isolation to a forever altered landscape, one silver lining will be the online savvy newly gained by traditionally digitally-shy businesses, some of whom have reacted with lightning speed to devise virtual showcases.
A drive towards virtual events initially manifested in early March across disrupted festivals such as Cph:dox and Thessaloniki, which hosted Zoom-based pitch events. But now, a new wave of business-oriented, distributor-led virtual events need to prove their mettle as the full brunt of canceled April and May markets such as Series Mania, MipTV, L.A. Screenings and Cannes is felt across the industry.
Sony was one of the first studios to reveal plans for a virtual offering in lieu of their annual Screenings event in May, with plans for an on-demand experience showing off new titles such as Hulu comedies “Woke” and “Crossing Swords” and Adrien Brody-fronted horror drama “Chapelwaite.

Madrid — In one of the first detailed breakdowns from a major European company of marketing strategies in the Series Mania/MipTV online marketplace, Germany’s Beta Film has announced that it will stage a virtual Beta Brunch on March 31.
Nobody will be offered virtual food, but the event will retain some of its flavor, going live at the same time at the traditional event, which also always takes place at midday on the markets’ Tuesday.
It remains to be seen how much of another highlight remains: Jan Mojto taking the stage to deliver a highly entertaining, anecdote-laced, 10-minutes-or-so speech. Mojto is billed this year, but as featuring along with Beta colleagues in an initial video presentation which will explain who is who at the ever-expanding Beta Film empire.
To retain the essence of a live event, however, clients will be provided with a personalized link, which will expire after the live-streaming of this introduction.
