STXfilms has decided to enter this unconventional awards season with a mighty and timely drama, “The Mauritanian,” formerly called “Prisoner 760,” from Scottish director Kevin Macdonald. The film will be released on Feb. 19, 2021, and could echo the same late-breaking awards success that past movies like “Million Dollar Baby” were able to execute. With an impressive cast that includes Tahar Rahim, Jodie Foster, Benedict Cumberbatch and Shailene Woodley, the inspiring true story could resonate with AMPAS voters, especially its large international membership.

“The Mauritanian” tells the true story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Rahim), who was held captive and tortured by the U.S. government in Guantanamo Bay detention camp for 10 years without a charge or trial. Losing faith, he finds hope in defense attorney Nancy Hollander (Foster) and her associate Teri Duncan (Woodley), who face countless legal obstacles in their pursuit of justice.

You say tomato, I say tomato, let’s call the whole thing a series.

Fish out of water comedies are a dime a dozen on television (look no further than recent Emmy darling “Schitt’s Creek”), but a string of new shows are taking those fish and flying them across the Atlantic, specifically to France and the United Kingdom.

While it might appear easy to play for a laugh out of a quirky British accent or a snobbish French custom, the creators and producers of Netflix’s “Emily in Paris” and “The Duchess,” and Apple TV Plus’ “Ted Lasso” know there is a need for nuance to move beyond the “ugly, dumb American abroad” trope, as the latter’s showrunner Bill Lawrence puts it.

“Emily in Paris,” which debuts Oct. 2 on Netflix, centers around a 20-something marketing exec (played by Lily Collins) who moves to Paris for work via a stroke of good fortune.

London’s Twickenham Studios has appointed Warner Bros De Lane Lea Director Cara Sheppard as MD.

Sheppard will be tasked with guiding all aspects of production, post-production and emerging technology and developing the studio’s ties with UK, Hollywood and international clients.

Sheppard spent four years at post house De Lane Lea, where she oversaw a fully serviced production Digital Dailies offering and new facility and the studio’s dark fibre capability. She previously spent five years with Sky as a senior manager of post production operations as well as running post at Goldcrest. She is a board member on UK Screen.

Twickenham is operated by Time+Space Studios. Managing Partners Piers Read and Jeremy Rainbird acquired the venue earlier this year and took over management control. The studio has been operational in recent months despite the Covid crisis.

When I discovered that Katherine Ryan was starting in a series (which she also helps to direct) I won’t lie I was very taken back… I know Katherine Ryan as a stand-up comedian; I know for her perspectives on feminism and somewhat crude jokes. Initially, I was very shocked by the inclusion of Ryan mainly due to the fact that she is more well-known for appearing on comedy panel shows and performing live; and so I have never really thought of her as an actress but actually I was very surprised by how well she performed here.

It’s finally Friday, so let’s take a look at all the new titles coming to the major streaming services over the next few days. The weekend beginning September 11th maybe isn’t the biggest of the month, but there are still a few new movies and TV shows arriving across Netflix, Disney Plus, HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime that you’ll want to catch.

For starters, Netflix has dropped eight new additions this Friday, including five originals. The highlights include comedy series The Duchess, popular DreamWorks animated sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2 and the latest bunch of Pokemon Journeys episodes. You might also wish to catch the second season of French series Family Business, romantic musical Lara & the Beat and children’s show Pets United.

As we head into the second week of September, let’s take a look at everything that’s coming to Netflix over the next seven days. This month is packed full of original movies and TV shows, and this next batch of content is no different. On Netflix’s new show “The Duchess,” series creator and star Katherine Ryan makes a very big deal out of transgressing, playing a character whose showy amorality feels borrowed from other, better shows. Ryan’s character, also named Katherine, is a London mom who doubles as a chaos agent. Two minutes into the first episode, Katherine tells off a fellow mom at the playground, calling her daughter (who has a learning disability) “dicks-lexic.” She later sends nudes of herself to this unfortunate woman’s husband in an attempt to break them up.
